Today marks the official start of turtle season, but somebody forgot to tell the turtles! Volusia County-managed beaches already have three sea turtle nests. The first nest was laid by a leatherback sea turtle on March 29, the earliest recorded sea turtle nest on county-managed beaches. The other two nests were laid by Kemp’s ridleys, the world’s smallest and most endangered species of sea turtle.

Please help us keep our beaches clean, flat, and dark to provide the best environment for these magnificent creatures! You can find more information at: https://bit.ly/3NmQEh3

Make sure the moon is the only light sea turtle hatchlings see during nesting season, May 1 to Oct. 31!

• Avoid using flashlights and cellphones on the beach at night.
• If you must use a flashlight, use a red light only when needed and dim the screen on your phone as much as possible.
• Never shine lights directly at sea turtles.
• Close blinds or draw curtains at night and make sure your property is compliant with the Volusia County Sea Turtle Ordinance.

Artists will soon converge on New Smyrna Beach for the city’s 11th annual Plein Air Paint Out. The event is set for Oct. 19-23, and will once again be hosted by the Marine Discovery Center and the Artists' Workshop NSB.

The Paint Out links art and nature with 20 nationally recognized artists traveling to New Smyrna Beach to create outdoor paintings from dawn to dusk during each day of the event. Artists paint at various locations throughout the city and surrounding areas, interpreting natural flora, fauna, landmarks and landscapes onto canvas.

“Our tag line this year is ‘Discover Nature Through Art’,” said Wendy Castino, marketing and fund development coordinator at the Marine Discovery Center and co-coordinator of the 2021 Paint Out.

“If you look at any paintings created outdoors, they are capturing nature through art and Plein Air is all about painting while outdoors,” she added.

The Marine Discovery Center’s educational programs are outdoor-oriented and it partners with its neighbor, The Artists’ Workshop, which is focused on art. The two non-profits will once again share Paint Out proceeds.

“The Plein Air Paint Out offers the best way to capture our flora and fauna, coastal habitat, seascapes and history of this area, and then allow residents to take a piece of it home,” said Castino. “Residents see places and natural local landscapes all the time and during in the Plein Air Paint Out, they may see some of those places captured as art.”

Each of the 20 artists will donate a piece of art from which all sales will benefit the two nonprofits. The artwork will be available at the kick-off “Collectors’ Reception” on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the Grand Ol' Barn in New Smyrna Beach, a former fruit-packing facility that has been renovated for special events. Admission is included for sponsors and patrons, but tickets are also available for $100 per person, which includes a $50 credit toward the purchase of art.

Paint Out activities begin at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 19, with two free art demonstrations at two sites that day, followed by an “Evening Paint at JB's Fish Camp.

Free art demonstrations will be held at various sites through Saturday, Oct. 23, with another “Evening Paint” set for 5 p.m. to dusk on Flagler Avenue on Thursday, Oct. 21. The public is also invited to view a day of artists’ activity at Battle Island (612 Battle Island Road) on Friday, Oct. 22, with two art demonstrations scheduled.

Events will culminate on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Marine Discovery Center/Artists Workshop, with a final art demo set for 10 a.m., followed by the Grand Finale and final art sales from 5-8 p.m. Tickets for that event will be $50 each or $90 for two and will feature the popular “blending of the brushes,” in which five artists complete a progressive piece of work that is auctioned that evening.

Throughout the week, the Paint Out Gallery is free and open daily to the public and will once again offer a safe and socially distanced experience for visitors. The gallery is located at the Artists’ Workshop at 540 Barracuda Boulevard. Art created throughout the week will be taken to the gallery, where it may be viewed and purchased either in person or through the online gallery at NSBPaintOut.com.

We are so happy for Heidi! Our homes are made of pieces and parts that started with connections and memories made at Coronado Hardware! Thank you for your value and service to the community! You will be missed every time someone has to drive across the bridge. ❤️

Yes... it is true.
Coronado Hardware is closing...
And now to answers the questions as to why... and to quell the rumors...
Heide is retired... and this started over five years ago. She is enjoying her time off.
Anchor Hardware is owned by the family... and I have been keeping Coronado Hardware open. It's exhausting trying to keep two businesses open.
The "landlord" didn't up the rent...
The building isn't sold...
As Ray just said, it's the "End of an Era"
We will be running different hours for the duration.
Monday-Saturday from 8-4
We do not have a firm final day yet but will keep you posted.

As Sea Turtle Month comes to a close, it’s important to remember to keep our beaches Dark, Flat and Clean for sea turtles nesting and hatching on our shores. There are 3 species - leatherbacks, loggerheads and green sea turtles- that regularly nest on Florida’s beaches and it’s our job to ensure their safety and survival by sharing the beaches.

Summer holiday weekends, including Memorial Day, are some of the busiest times for our local beaches, waterways, and special locales like Disappearing Island, and can have a big impact on wildlife. Don't let that spoil your fun - just remember a few simple things! 🌞🚤🏖

When boating make sure you're following guidelines and staying safe while watching out for the dolphins, manatees, sea turtles and other creatures that share the water. Grab a pair of polarized sunglasses - they reduce glare and make it easier to see things in the water 😎

The beaches this time of year are important nesting grounds for sea turtles and shore birds, so make sure you're properly disposing of trash, taking everything with you when you leave, filling in holes and knocking down sand castles, and following these tips from Audubon Florida 🐦

Volusia County News: Memorial Day weekend at the beach

According to the weather forecast, the upcoming Memorial Day weekend is expected to include a mix of sun and storms, with clear weather Saturday likely leading to a busy beach day. If your long weekend includes a visit to the coast, plan to reach the beach early to avoid late morning high tides.

Vehicle ramps will open no earlier than 8 a.m., and all vehicles must exit the beach before 7 p.m. In anticipation of the busy weekend, beachgoers are encouraged to access the beach by way of less-trafficked vehicle access ramps. Parking is also available at one of the county’s many off-beach parking lots.

With rip currents an ongoing threat throughout the week and into the weekend, the safest way to enjoy the water is always in front of a staffed lifeguard tower.

For real-time updates on the status of vehicle access ramps, as well as other useful information, like staffed lifeguard towers and beach conditions, download the free Volusia Beaches app from the Google Play or Apple App store.

Beachgoers may see lingering patches of Sargassum seaweed along the sand, which washed ashore in large quantities late last week. While the seaweed creates an unpleasant smell, it proves beneficial to the beach environment by capturing wind-blown sand and restoring elevation. In balanced amounts, it naturally provides nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus to the shoreline waters, as well as brings with it crustaceans that provide food and nutrients to shoreline avian life. Therefore, the county does not remove the seaweed and encourages beachgoers to avoid disturbing it. However, vehicles may park on top of the seaweed.

With May 1 marking the start of turtle season, leaving the beach cleaner than you found it is more important than ever. Beachgoers are asked to flatten sandcastles, fill in holes, and take chairs and equipment with them at the end of their visit, as these are obstacles for nesting sea turtles. Always stay clear of marked sea turtle nests and do not leave trash on the beach as it attracts predators.

While fun in the sun is encouraged on Volusia County beaches, alcohol, glass containers and pets are prohibited. Vehicles must remain in designated driving areas and observe the speed limit. Trash and recycle cans are placed at regular intervals along the beach, and roving carts will canvass the beach to assist with the collection of garbage. Don’t be “shellfish”—do your part to keep the beach clean!

⌚️Wrack is Back!
Wrack is a very common and normal occurrence along Florida’s beaches in the summer months. It is also vital to the ecological systems of a healthy beach, which is why during sea turtle nesting season (March to October), City Staff are not permitted to remove any beach wrack from the shore.

But what exactly is beach wrack?
➡️“Wrack” is the term used to describe seaweed (sargassum), surfgrass, driftwood and other organic materials produced by coastal ecosystems that wash ashore on a beach. Wrack has several different functions that help to improve the overall health of a beach ecosystem.
➡️First, it can help to anchor dunes by trapping and storing wind-borne sand, acting to create more resilient dunes, and providing the structure needed for land plants to take root and grow on the upper portion of the beach. These dunes not only support local wildlife who call the beach home, but also act as natural barriers to storm surge and wave action, making them a vital asset in the protection of coastal communities from flooding. A stable dune system will be especially crucial as sea level rise begins to enhance coastal storm systems and nuisance flooding.
➡️Wrack also helps to feed many creatures that live in and on the sand. These creatures then in turn provide a food source for other animals such as birds. Over time, wrack that has been washed ashore will decompose, releasing essential nutrients into the beach, acting as a rich natural fertilizer.
➡️To find out more about beach wrack check out the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website: https://myfwc.com/conservation/special-initiatives/cwci/beach-wrack/?fbclid=IwAR0JPAppXLFmy3PRZ7DMpm4pdwpP8TuwsAtaMVA7GgCW96xrceJgGpUyKfU

Happy from Bethune Beach.
In the days of Jim Crow laws, African Americans were banned from most of Florida's beaches, but thanks to Civil Rights leader, Mary McLeod Bethune, this beautiful stretch of beach was opened to black residents in 1945. Mary McLeod Bethune was known as the "First Lady of Negro America" and the "First Lady of the Struggle" because of her commitment to gain better lives for African Americans.
For more African American history and culture be sure to check out the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum in NSB.
