DO YOU KNOW UR : KARL HEINRICH ULRICHS “THE FIRST GAY MAN IN WORLD HISTORY”
German writer Karl Heinrich Ulrichs grew up in the mid-1800s preferring to wear dresses and feeling like he’d much rather be a girl. In 1862, when he was 37, he told his family and friends that he was an “urning,” which he described as “a female psyche in a male body who is sexually attracted to men.” He began writing under a pseudonym, coining a number of terms to describe different sexual orientations. He eventually started using his real name, which is considered to be the first public “coming out” in modern society. Ulrichs was also the first homosexual to speak out against anti-homosexual laws.
HIS WORDS RESONATE TODAY: “Until my dying day I will look back with pride that I found the courage to come face to face in battle against the spectre which for time immemorial has been injecting poison into me and into men of my nature. Many have been driven to su***de because all their happiness in life was tainted. Indeed, I am proud that I found the courage to deal the initial blow to the hydra of public contempt.” He is now considered an icon and pioneer.

As our time aboard the EXPLORA I with Explora Journeys in Hilo, Hawaii came to a close, it unfolded in pure indulgence and relaxation. The sun rose, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, signaling the beginning of a day dedicated to unwinding and savoring every moment.

We started our day by the poolside, letting the warmth of the sun envelop our bodies as we lounged in the comfort of plush chairs. Masterful cocktails in hand, each sip seemed to transport us deeper into a state of blissful tranquility.

For lunch, we ventured to Sakura, where we were treated to a feast of Asian delicacies that delighted our taste buds and satisfied our cravings for culinary excellence.

The afternoon called for a visit to the spa, a sanctuary of rejuvenation and pampering. In the salt cave, we surrendered to the healing properties of the minerals, letting go of any lingering tension. A dip in the warm waters of the hydrotherapy pool followed, soothing our muscles and revitalizing our spirits.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we had the pleasure of immersing ourselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Hawaii with a pre-dinner show titled "The Spirit of Polynesia." This captivating performance showcased the beauty and artistry of Hawaiian dancers, their movements fluid and graceful, telling stories of ancient traditions and legends through the language of dance.

Throughout our journey, the staff aboard the EXPLORA I proved to be sophisticated and attentive, always anticipating our needs and ensuring that every moment was tailored to perfection.

Before dinner, we made a stop at the lobby bar for a handcrafted cocktail, savoring the expertly crafted flavors that danced on our palates.
