This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Indoors Edition. Today: Posters. The largest collection of vintage posters in the WORLD is in Tribeca. 'Philip Williams Posters' has piles and piles of posters to look through and prices range from $15 to thousands of dollars. There are even some prints from the 1600's. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Indoors Edition. Today: Dream House. A minimalist art experience, this version of the 'Dream House' was created in 1993 as an experiment with sound and light design. The space is supposed to give a calming, relaxing space amidst the chaos of the city. Unfortunately, in the last year its existence is threatened because of inability to pay rent during the Pandemic. Make sure to visit while you still can! More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Indoors Edition. Today: Mystery Bookstore. No, this isn't an active crime scene, just part of a book store which focuses exclusively on mystery and crime novels. It's one of the oldest mystery bookstores in the US and features the largest collection of Sherlock Holmes titles (as well as "Sherlockiana" - the fandom and study of Holmes) in the world. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Indoors Edition. Today: Small Museum. The 'Mmuseumm' is an entire museum in the space of an elevator shaft. It was founded in part by the Safdie Brothers, who made the film 'Uncut Gems.' More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Outdoors Edition. Today: National Monument. Many NYers are unaware that Tribeca contains an official National Monument. The African Burial Ground Monument recognizes the burial of over 15,000 Africans in New York (almost entirely enslaved people) in this area. This was due to a law passed in 1697 in the city where no one of African-descent would be allowed to be buried within the the city limits and this location was not yet part of the official city. It's a site worth a visit on your next trip to NYC. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Outdoors Edition. Today: Jenga Building. Most visitors comment that the building resembles the skill game 'Jenga.' Built in 2017, '56 Leonard Street' is the tallest building in Tribeca and was designed off of the concept of 'houses stacked into the sky.' These houses, though, are some of the most expensive condos in the entire city. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Outdoors Edition. Today: Windowless Skyscraper. One of the most protected skyscrapers in the world, the AT&T Long Lines building was built in 1974 to survive two weeks on its own after a nuclear blast. Initially, it housed telephone company's central telephone switches, now it is the center for secretive NSA data collection programs. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Tribeca: Outdoors Edition. Today: Ghostbusters Firehouse. Built in 1903, this has been a functioning fire station its entire history. Briefly threatened with closure in 2011, a support campaign lead by Steve Buscemi (a trained NYC fire fighter in the 80s) raised enough funds to keep it in service. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Midtown. Today: Random Outdoor Dining. We all know the Pandemic has pushed many restaurants to get creative with their outdoor dining spaces, but this steakhouse is the first one I've seen entirely covered in fake grass for seemingly no reason. I stumbled upon it while on a walk. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Midtown. Today: 'WHAT PARTY.' That's the title of a new sculpture from local artist KAWS, unveiled in August of 2020. He's known best for his reappropriation of pop culture icons like Mickey Mouse. This was placed outside of the Seagram Building, which was also the building where Bill Murray worked in film 'Scrooged.' More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Midtown. Today: 6 1/2 Ave. Maybe reminiscent of 'Being John Malkovich' with its fictional 7 1/2 floor, 6 1/2 Avenue is very real. It was completed in 2012 as a pedestrian walkway with stop signs for traffic, giving people the right-of-way. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' things around Midtown. Today: Massive Chessboard. It's 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide, with 2.5 foot pieces. This was installed in 1980 and the board replays famous matches from history with one move a week each Wednesday, moved by the building concierge in a cherrypicker. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Whisper Gallery. Bury your head into one of these corners and talk and your voice will travel to the opposite end like you were standing right next to the person. This feature wasn't done intentionally, but happens because the unique "Guastavino" tiles are so tightly set together there is no where else for the sound to go except to the opposite end. Something to try on your next trip! More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Graybar Rats. Just outside GCT you'll find an odd sculpture at the Graybar Building, rats climbing up the posts. The posts are supposed to depict mooring lines on a ship, tying it to harbor. Cones were used to stop rats from entering the ship before the ship launched. So, this sculpture is in fact depicting a building stopping rats from entering. Poor rats can't catch a break. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Backwards Ceiling. The ceiling of the station features paintings of 12 zodiac constellations - but they were painted backwards by accident. Noticed by a random commuter a few months after the station opened, it was eventually corrected but Orion was still facing the wrong direction. Many believe this was because the designers wanted him to be facing Ta**us the Bull for an epic star battle. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio. **us

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Ginormous Statues. At the time this was unveiled in 1914, the statues at GCT's entrance were the largest statue group in the world. Though it may not seem like it from a distance, together they weigh over 1,400 tons. It has a few official names, but true to NYer form, most call it by its simplest, most straightforward (and boring) name, "Transportation." More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Grand Central Terminal. Today: Lighting & Acorns. Proud of GCT's status as one of the world's first all-electric buildings, Cornelius Vanderbilt made sure to highlight its chandeliers. Look closely and on many of them you'll find acorn symbols. This was the Vanderbilt Family's official symbol, signifying the phrase, "from a little acorn a mighty oak shall grow." More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! We're back! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Downtown Brooklyn. Today: the Fort Greene Monument. A short walk away from Downtown is the hilly Fort Greene Park, designed by the same designers as Central Park. But at its center lies something surprising - a crypt of over 11,500 people. Under this memorial are the remains of prisoners of war that died on prison boats operated by the British during the American Revolution. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! We're back! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Downtown Brooklyn. Today: the Transit Museum. One of my favorite museums in the city, you can walk through old subway car designs. This model was in operation between 1949-1976 and known as the the "Car of Tomorrow." It featured a stainless steel shell with "ultraviolet germ-killing lamps." Unfortunately those lamps were highly unreliable and several cars would end up pitch-black, leading to its eventual discontinuation. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! We're back! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Downtown Brooklyn. Today: the Stone Telephone. Way back in 1897, the telephone was the newest of new technologies. The local provider for Bell's company opened a building in Brooklyn and wanted to add a flourish the new building: a stone telephone design in its entry. It can still be seen today. We're back! Check out our site for our new tour schedule! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Downtown Brooklyn. Today: Masstransiscope. In 1980, experimental filmmaker Bill Brand was allowed to install an art installation part of the Subway. Using slits cut at specific times looking at lighted backdrops, it gives the feel of an early motion picture predecessor. You can view it on the B/Q trains from the Dekalb stop heading to Manhattan - look out the right-hand side! More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

We're back! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Downtown Brooklyn. Today: House of Wax Bar. Part of the Alamo Drafthouse Movie theatre, this bar houses an entire collection of wax sculptures last featured in Berlin in 1922 at a museum called 'Castan’s Panopticum.' This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Central Park West, the street that borders Central Park to the Upper West Side. Today: Seneca Village. To create Central Park, NYC claimed eminent domain over a thriving African-American community to make them relocate their homes to make the park. There were over 50 homes (which would have bordered Central Park West) that were destroyed. This spot is the site of a former church - and one of the last remnants of the former village, which was around from the 1820s - 1850s. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Central Park West, the street that borders Central Park to the Upper West Side. Today: The First Car Fatality. Henry Bliss has the unfortunate honor of receiving a plaque at the intersection of 74th Street & Central Park West as the first person in the Western Hemisphere to die from a car accident in 1899. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Central Park West, the street that borders Central Park to the Upper West Side. Today: The First Cancer Hospital. While former President Grant was living in NYC, he developed throat cancer and passed away. This was credited with sparking a public need to develop facilities to study and treat the disease. That attention turned into this, the first Cancer Hospital in the US, which was finished in 1886. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.

This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Central Park West, the street that borders Central Park to the Upper West Side. Today: The Maine Monument. The sculpture at the Southwest entrance to Central Park is a monument to the fallen battleship the USS Maine and built using scrap metal from the ship. This was seen as a direct cause of the Spanish-American War, with wealthy newspapermen claiming Spain was the cause, despite no evidence to prove it. This week, let’s look at some 'atypical' places around Central Park West, the street that borders Central Park to the Upper West Side. Today: Zuul's Home. In 'Ghostbusters,' this was the apartment where Dana Barrett accidentally summoned the ancient ghost Zuul in her fridge. You'll notice it's a lot smaller in real life because they digitally added stories to make it seem taller. More ‘atypical’ facts on our tours - AVAILABLE NOW! Book via the website in our bio.
