Adventure Untamed

Adventure Untamed Explore the wild. Escape your comfort zone. Northeast day and multi-day outdoor trips departing from NYC. Why start a company in the middle of a pandemic?

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60763-d20907113-Reviews-Adventure_Untamed-New_York_City_New_York.html At the time COVID-19 hit, I had been a guide with a NYC-based outdoor adventure company, Discover Outdoors, for almost three years. I started out as a client a decade earlier, and as my passion for adventure in the outdoors became an increasingly important part of my life, I began g

uiding on weekends. It was a “passion project.” I didn’t know then how much I would learn and how attached I would become to the team of guides with whom I worked. I got a chance to guide with interesting, passionate, knowledgeable, unique people. Their experiences inspired me. Their expertise motivated me. I wanted more. So when the opportunity presented itself in 2019, I made a complete career change and came to work for the company full time, running the Northeast part of the business.

Then, COVID-19 hit. I got laid off. Discover Outdoors shut down operations. It felt like a monumental loss. I was hoping that someone or something would come along and provide a solution for the company to continue. But then I realized, all the pieces that I cared so much about - the community of guides, the outdoor adventures, the people that want to experience these trips with us - they were all still there. And if I wanted for our work to continue, the answer was not waiting for something to happen - the answer was to make it happen. Of course, it could only work if the people that I worked with were still on board. They are the ones that created the unforgettable experiences and community that drew me in to begin with. I let the team know that I was planning to start a new business to run Northeast day and multi-day outdoors trips, departing from New York City. I was met with overwhelming, heart-warming support and encouragement. If the team was on board, it was time to get to work! So here we are! To continue doing what we love, we are putting ourselves outside of our comfort zone, at a time when everything has been turned upside down. And once it’s safe to do so, I hope you will join us! Whether it’s learning about the natural world from a Master Naturalist, exploring a new high peak in the Catskills, doing a nature meditation, or challenging yourself on a long-distance hike, I hope you let us guide you on an adventure that challenges you, excites you, and opens you up to a whole new world! Be well, be safe, and see you soon!

We hear some of our adventurers say they shy away from winter hiking, because they are afraid of being cold 🥶.

So, here are some tips to keep you comfortable in the outdoors this winter 😊❄️:

-Start the hike on the uncomfortable side of cold. You will warm up almost immediately from movement. If you don't want to start cold, de-layer as soon as you feel yourself getting hot, *before* you start swearing.

-DON'T sweat (it makes it very hard to regulate body temperature). Adjust your layers as soon as you start feeling hot. If all else fails, slower your pace.

-As soon as you stop, put on a layer, even if you are hot. Once heat escapes, it's very hard to get it back. Put on a layer even if you are stopping for just a few minutes.

-If you are cold, make sure all your layers are zipped, and all hoods are up. Hoods make a huge difference.

-Invest in a few good pieces of gear: puffy; wind/rain shells; insulated, waterproof mitts.

Have specific gear questions, we love to talk gear 😀! Just reach out! Don't let the cold keep you indoors - see you on the trails!

Adventurers, when someone asks you: "What's your favorite season?" Do you think of the golden colors of fall? The rebirth of spring? The sunny, never-ending days of summer?

For me, winter is my absolute favorite! It's the season that carries with it the most sense of adventure. When fresh snow covers the trails, it makes familiar stomping grounds into new frontiers. It just a little more technical, just a little more challenging, and a whole lot more adventurous. You learn a lot. You see a lot. And you get away from the noise of it all - nothing like a trail that hasn't seen a human step since the snowfall, with trees covered in fluffy snow, to make you feel like you are thousands of miles away.

OUR NEW WINTER SCHEDULE IS OUT!

If you are hiking by yourself, remember to always have enough stuff in your pack where you can survive a night in the woods.

These include:
1. PAPER map of the area (GPS can be a backup, but paper map is a must)
2. Headlamp
3. Extra food and water
4. Shelter (that may be an emergency bivy in cold temperatures or extra layers in warmer temperatures)
5. Matches or another way to start a fire that won't malfunction when wet
6. First aid
7. And don't forget to share your plan for the day with someone NOT on the trip, with check-in times and whom to contact if you don't check in

Ah, last weekend we got to enjoy some peak foliage. Gorgeous! 🤩

As an added treat, at the top of Brace Mountain, paragliders were taking off. We got to see them fly! Next season, thinking of doing our very own AU paragliding trip off the top of that mountain.

We have a couple more weekends left of this fall foliage! The weather is looking gorgeous, and we have lots of great trips this weekend, including a Fall Foraging hike with (yes, you will get to actually forage for edible plants 😀) and a hike where you get to see the raptor migration with Gary Keir

Adventurers, the holidays are almost here, and whether you are choosing to stay local, not feeling like celebrating this year, or just want a unique holiday experience, we have something for you!

Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's! We are going on adventures! You don't need to do any planning - just show up and spend the day in good company in the beautiful outdoors.

For Thanksgiving, we are getting back to NYC by 3:00 pm, so you can still make evening plans after your hike. And for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, we are staying close to the City, so you don't have to worry about the van getting stuck in traffic during the holidays.

And, of course, I would be remiss not to mention my favorite holiday trip - New Year's in the Adirondacks. Since I started this company, I have guided a New Year's hike in the Adirondacks every year. And this year is no exception. We stay in a cozy mountain lodge (that's it in the picture above!) with tasty meals, a real fireplace, and a closet full of board games! We hike a 46er and do a smaller hike the day before (and a sunrise hike the day after, for anyone that's interested and doesn't mind getting up at the crack of dawn ;)). I love winter! It's my favorite season for adventuring! And I love sharing my passion for it with you, at the start of a new year. I hope you can join me to ring in 2023!

Our holiday trips are usually the fastest to fill up - register today to secure your spot. And if you register before the end of the week, use the code HOLIDAYS10 to save 10%.

Adventurers, our new spring schedule is finally here 😄. And we've got news! The van fee is finally gone. We are transitioning to running our trips at full capacity (we will still do health screenings and wear masks 100% of the time in the van for the time being). That means it will now cost you less to join one of our trips!

Also, in light of what is going on in Ukraine, we want to help. We will be donating 5% of the profits on our spring trips (March 12th - May 31st) to help the Ukrainians in their fight against the invasion of their country. We are currently researching what organizations would be best to use to donate to this cause, and we will send an email with details of what organization we choose.

We hope you join us! AND we are extending our spring discounts through March 18th:

2 day trips - $30 off, coupon code: 2DAYTRIPS
3 day trips - $60 off, coupon code: 3DAYTRIPS

Hear guide Gary discuss how this program is different from the usual emission-offset programs. Enjoy some food (catered by Le Botaniste). Leaf peeping 🍁
Color tour 🍃
Momijigari (a similar custom in Japan) 🍂

Once we start feeling fall in the air, it's time to go and see the breathtaking color changes. When I was younger, my parents and I would get into our '88 Toyota Camry and take a road trip to Vermont or New Hampshire - still the most striking fall foliage places I have seen.

And at Adventure Untamed we are continuing the proud leaf peeping tradition by doing the Franconia Ridge Traverse - a day on the ridge means views for miles if the weather is clear. And yes, the photo is an actual, unedited photo from the ridge in 2019.

Time to take in fall in all its glory! 😀 Link in bio 👆

What about you? Do you have any traditions revolving around fall or leaf peeping?

Adventurers! When we are not having 90-degree days, you can almost feel the first whispers of fall. Maybe it's the wind picking up as the weather shifts. Maybe it's the first leaves changing color. Signs are everywhere! We are about to enter the season of foliage, apple picking, and fun in the outdoors! (Don't forget to make Labor Day Weekend plans!)

Here at Adventure Untamed, we have a really exciting fall planned! As always, we are brining you trips to all-new areas - the hidden gems of our area!

While the weather is still warm, we are going to spend a little more time on the water. Ever thought about learning how to surf?

As fall really gets going, we are going leaf peeping, both locally and in the White Mountains, arguably the best place to see fall foliage!

We are diving right into the season, going for apple-picking hikes, foraging hikes, and spoooooky hikes!

Most importantly, we are exploring! Near and far! We are going to new places, seeing and experiencing new things, and learning new skills!

And for an extra bonus, you will get a discount on any trip you book between September 1st and September 8th:

1 day trip - $15 off, coupon code: 1DAYTRIP
2 day trips - $40 off, coupon code: 2DAYTRIPS
3 day trips - $75 off, coupon code: 3DAYTRIPS

An engagement on the side of a cliff, 100 feet off the ground💍🎉! This , it's the story of Farah and Gemma!

You may not know this about me, but I am a big believer in romance, so when Gemma called me to help plan a day for her to propose to Farah, I was thrilled! 😃

After a beautiful, secluded hike in Mohonk Preserve, overlooking the Catskill Mountains, we came to the top of Bonticou Crag. There, as pre-planned 🤫, Eric of had set up two ropes for Gemma and Farah to rappel side by side (Farah still had no idea what was coming! 😉).

A little distance into their rappel, Eric tied off the ropes, so they could be hands-free. That's when Gemma took out the ring and proposed to Farah - 100 feet in the air, hanging side by side on a rock wall. FARAH SAID YES!!! 😍🤩💙

I was at the bottom with a bottle of champagne and confetti (which I later diligently collected - ), and we finished the day with some celebratory scrambling and rock climbing! Wow, what a day!

CONGRATULATIONS TO FARAH AND GEMMA, and thank you for letting me and be a small part of your story! 🎉💍🎉

On this , we are celebrating Karen Chernoff. Karen started her outdoor journey last year and quickly became an avid hiker.

Less than two months into her hiking experience, she challenged herself by joining Adventure Untamed for a hike to the summit of Mt. Washington. It was no easy feat - the steep, rocky terrain is grueling for even the most experienced hikers.

What's more, Karen had to navigate exposed ledges, with running water on sections of trail. It definitely took her outside of her comfort zone and had her come face to face with her discomfort around heights.

Fast forward a year, and Karen decided to go back to Mt. Washington for Seek the Peak with AU guide and Mt. Washington Seek the Peak veteran (and one of the top fundraisers for several years) Porter. By this time, she has been hiking nearly every weekend and becoming an expert at scrambling. The previously-daunting mountain became a manageable challenge.

Congrats to Karen for always improving, always getting stronger, and always expanding her comfort zone and then pushing past it! And congrats to Wendy for being back on the summit!

How was your weekend, Adventurers?

Our Nature Connection Hike with had a little of everything. Because of the recent rain, it was in part an impromptu mushroom walk ☔🍄

We sketched or wrote about the things that captured our attention. We did mindfulness practices. We observed wild (aka bug - see photos 😉) life. And we even hugged some trees - it's a long story - we were identifying by touch, rather than sight 😁. AND WE ARE TONS OF WILD BLUEBERRIES (or was it just me 🤔).

Thank you, as always, to for bringing curiosity and creativity to all her guiding. Can't wait for all the new ideas!
