I just spent 2 weeks rafting and camping along the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Woohoo!
🛶
It was in the high 90s - low 100s most days and we cooled off by jumping in the river. Nights were also usually warm and muggy so some of us (myself included) slept out under the stars, with nothing more than a sleeping pad and a pillow since tents felt like saunas. One night, I got completely soaked in a downpour and had to scramble to set up my tent in the dark and rain but otherwise, I LOVED sleeping without a tent. The flies and were horribly annoying and the biting red ants hurt like crazy but they went to sleep so they didn’t bother us overnight.
🐜
Every day we rafted much of the day and spent the rest of the time hiking slot canyons, visiting waterfalls, scrambling up rock faces, and learning about pictographs made by the Native American tribes that lived in the canyons thousands of years ago (several tribes still live along sections of the Grand Canyon).
🥾
14 days is a LONG time to be on the river. It a a long time to sleep on the ground, pee in a river, poop in a bucket, and have zero access to any plumbing, electricity, Internet, and access to family. Most people on the trip were ready to go by day 8 or 9. Did I mention that two people on the trip tested positive for Covid, one guy had to be emergency evacuated by helicopter due to back pain (preexisting), an older man fell walking at night and seriously busted his eye (near evacuation) and one woman became so anxious after falling into a rapid (a regular occurrence) that she decided to hike out on day 6 instead of finishing the trip? Yeah, it was a rough trip, especially for our wonderful guides. They said, it was an incredible experience.
🚁
I plan to do another post about what to expect on these trips. What do you want to know about the rafting, hiking, hygiene, food, or any other aspect of the trip?
Making it rain over here!

Last month, I visited Central #Wisconsin, where 60% of the world’s cranberries are produced! Say whaaaaaaat? Yup, I was born and raised in this state and had no idea it’s #1 fruit crop was cranberries.
😋
I visited a 5th generation #cranberry farm that just started doing bog tours this year as a way to diversify their income. It was such a fun experience so I hope to include them in more articles to get the word out (I mentioned them in my latest Wisconsin piece for Thrillist.
🍁
Cranberries are harvested in the fall so that’s why you rarely see them on sale after Thanksgiving. The tart berries are packed with nutrients like vitamin C so sailors used to eat them to prevent scurvy.
🛶
Anyone else eat frozen #cranberries yearround? Shout out to cranberry smoothies, pancakes, and kale salad!
For everyone not lucky enough to have free entertainment on the way to the airport (I tipped them $5 though).

Welcome to the craziest art gallery in Cuba 🇨🇺. I bring my group tours here to meet my friend who is the artist and creator behind this “arts neighborhood”. His father designed the famous Che Guevara memorial in Santa Clara
Sneak peak into a new boutique 4-story casa particular I will use on future group trips to Cuba. It just opened a few months ago and is so different from the usual casas.
Have you ever tried “guarapo”? This fresh sugar cane juice is my favorite drink🍹 in Cuba 🇨🇺
#traveltiptuesday Find restaurants with killer toppings bars. This could be Mexican salsas 🇲🇽, Indian chutneys 🇮🇳, or Korean kimchis. They are often so flavorful and varied that you could be served a plain bowl of rice 🍚 and be satisfied!
INPUT!!!! This is a 67-year old Persian-Canadian with a 2-year old kid by a 30-something Cuban woman. I got tons of DMs when I posted this in my Instagram story last week .
👶
This is typical. Men from all over the world but especially from Canada and Germany (and now the US), flock to Cuba and other poor countries and scoop up young women as girlfriends. Many have kids with them .
🇨🇺
Is this unethical? Are the men disgusting creeps or are they just meeting a demand the women have? Do we feel sorry for the women? Do we look down on them? Is this their only option or have they simply taken the easier (albeit kinda gross) route?
👶
I have heard all these views from followers, travelers here, and also from local Cubans so I wanted to open up the discussion.
Live from the Romerias de Mayo festivities in Holguin, Cuba. Four days of parades, music, sports competitions, and dancing!
Tumba Francesa, a dance 💃 unique to Eastern Cuba, inspired by French slave holders who fled Haiti after the slaves successfully revolted 🎉. Only thee troupes remain in Cuba: Guantanamo, Holguin, and Santiago. Yes, that’s Fidel on the wall!
A taste of the motorcycle 🏍 problems we had during a 450 kilometer road trip in Cuba 🇨🇺. There was silicone in the bootleg gas ⛽️ that stopped us, then the clutch broke so we needed a push after every stop 🛑 (food, gas, stoplight, be fined for passing a 🐎 carriage, etc). Big problems but HUGE FUN. #cuba #roadtrip #motorcycle
#traveltiptuesday💰 Save money by renting a room/apartment with a kitchen so you can buy groceries and cook 👩🍳 .
🇨🇺
Cuba doesn’t have large supermarkets like we do in the US so I had to visit 5 markets to find all these veggies. The shop with oil was closed so I borrowed some from downstairs .
🇨🇺
Check out what I bought and get a tour of my apartment in Santiago de Cuba .
🇨🇺
Check out this beautiful casa particular in Mayari, Cuba 🇨🇺, the motivation of the famous Salsa 💃 ballad, “Voy Pa’ Mayari” 🎶 #cuba #salsa
New IG story about my first Bike Friday folding bike on top of a car travel experience! I still have a cold and couldn’t bike the entire route so we folded up the bike and threw it on top of a “colectivo” 🚗. So much fun! #cuba #biketouring #bikelife

Mick Jagger speaking Spanish at Rolling Stones concert in Havana, Cuba
Want to hear Mick Jagger speak adorable Spanish?
🇨🇺 Check out this video I took at the Rolling Stones concert in Havana in March, 2016. 500,000 people were in attendance for the first large concert in Cuba in over half a century.
🇨🇺 With no infrastructure to put on large concerts, the band had to bring all of it's own equipment, which it then left behind as a gift to Cuba to use for future concerts.

#traveltiptuesday Instead of the usual hotel or boring bedroom, enjoy staying at a unique home stay, such as this traditional Chinese home 🏡 in Melaka, Malaysia 🇲🇾

During the Dutch occupation, the Dutch charged housing taxes based on the width of a house, not the length, so many homes of that era were very narrow and long. Clever!
