Get ready to be shocked 😳

Today is “International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste”- we are sharing a few stats that honestly, we found quite shocking when they were brought to our attention.

🪲 Did you know, tourism is responsible for roughly 8% of the world’s carbon emissions? From plane flights and boat rides to souvenirs and lodging, various activities contribute to tourism’s carbon footprint.

Did you also know, this exact SAME % of global greenhouse gas (G.H.G.) emissions comes from food loss and waste!! 🚛🥬

Who else finds it Astonishing that food waste can be as impactful as global travel!!??

Although, it makes a lot of sense these two polluters contribute to each other. When you see kiwi on the hotel buffet table in New York City you can be sure it’s not locally grown. 🥝

But there is hope! 🪴

Of the estimated 17% of total global food production wasted, 5% is food service & 2% in retail. ✳️ This means the other 11% comes from household waste.

We can be mindful of waste, practice freezing products before they spoil, and composting and more! Small adjustments contribute to less waste but also financial savings for your household. ♻️

🌴 Travelers - let hotels know you support practices that reduce waste, like locally based menus, freshly prepared foods in place of buffets, less paper and plastic, or selecting meals in advance.

Another fact to consider, hunger is on the rise globally since 2014! 🧩

Saving just one-fourth of the food currently lost or wasted in the World could help feed 870 million people who are living in hunger as well as fight climate change! 💚

Food loss/ waste greatly undermines sustainability of food systems — water, land, soil, air, energy, labor, and capital. 🌳 All leading to a depletion of the ozone layer and contributing to climate change.

It’s Climate Week in New York City! 🌍

This week we’ve been attending and participating in conversations centered around the future of travel in a changing world. And, importantly how to achieve BIG goals for fundamentally reshaping the future of travel!

✈️ Who loves flying coach??!! 😁😆 Yeah, definitely not me, but I do love to travel & flying gets me there (although once landed I opt for trains if that’s an option🙋‍♀️) Since flying is usually part of the deal - Today, I have an inception-esqe travel tip… a bag within a bag!!🎒 Important to note that I do not let myself overpack, so I have to be careful about space, using every inch wisely. 💖 Shout out to Istria, the region in northwest #Croatia, that feels like a travel back in time, to a place where everywhere is a photo op, it’s smells amazing and every meal is farm to table fantastic! Here we feature a few pics from Grožnjan at sunset, but if you look closely you’ll see the Adriatic Sea in the distance. That’s right! This area has countryside & coastline 💞 Because we LOVE Istria, and wouldn’t dare to keep our travel secrets to ourselves 🤫 we have a few tips for visiting (and falling in love with) #ISTRIA 🗓️ Best time to visit: April, May, June, September & October. 🚗 Getting around: this is one place in Croatia it’s great to have a car. The Istrian peninsula is large but the roads are new but small. It’s very easy to get around and park outside of the busy summer months! 🤹‍♀️ What is there to do: Come with an appetite! The food here is fantastic, with many traditional methods of production. Most families here have their own garden and press their own olive oil! 🫒 If you enjoy wine, visit a few of the local vineyards & wineries 🍷you’ll be in for a real treat! Less than 100 years ago, this area was part of Italy, you’ll see signs of its Italian past everywhere and can even tour a Roman colosseum in Pula 🏛️ The coastline is stunning, plus the neighboring region is home to islands that are a paradise not known to most American travelers (yet). ⛵️Charter a boat for the day, you’ll be so glad you did! 🗺️ The geography of the area is perfect for day trips! You can easily visit parts of Italy, Slovenia and the interior of Croatia in a day trip! Fun Fact: you can even visit all three countries in the same day!! Joining his family who were already operating a local spot, together creating an innovative & important culinary mark on their city. 🌺 The dining area consists of handmade wood tables placed in the garden of the family home. 🌟Did you know Oaxaca is home to nearly a dozen unique festivals? Oaxaca City plays host to many of the best known celebrations, but the pueblos (towns) nearby also host events; each partaking in their own unique style! 🪅 All this is accomplished by the community coming together to make it happen. 🫶 Just a few of the special celebrations include… 🔆 Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) - you may have heard of this one, but to really understand this special celebration -> speak to locals! Find out what it means to them and their family. 🔆 The Guelaguetza (geh-la-get-zah), Oaxaca’s most famous folk festival, it has been called the largest folkloric festival of the Americas, held each July. 🔆 The Noche de Rábanos (Oaxaca Night of the Radishes) held each December 23, a lot of fun and ties in food with religious traditions around Christmas. 🔆 Semana Santa, also Holy Week or Easter Week. In Oaxaca this means parades and processions in the city center, as well as festivities in the towns (all week long!) 🔆 La Vela Muxe, occurs each November in Juchitán de Zaragoza.
