Is this a good idea for NYC?

In the small fishing town of Ísafjörður, Iceland, an exciting development in road safety has just popped up - almost literally. A new pedestrian crossing has been painted that appears to be 3D by way of a cleverly-detailed optical illusion.

Just read a fascinating new book, The Ghost Ship of Brooklyn, by Robert P Watson. It is about the prison ship Jersey anchored in Wallabout Bay, Brooklyn during the American Revolution. More people died on it, were killed on it, than on all that war's battlefields combined. I knew the general story, but the details are amazing.

Just got back from a speaking engagement on the amazing Queen Elizabeth Cunard ship. Nothing like talking about New York in the middle of the Atlantic to travelers who want to hear what you have to say. Delightful

Visit to Lillian Nassau 10-6-16

At a fund-raiser for the Smith College Scholarship Fund, last evening I had the pleasure of visiting the great Lillian Nassau store on E 57th St, top retailer of Louis Comfort Tiffany products. The store’s owner Arlie Sulka, Smith ’78, and Margaret K. Hofer, Vice President and Museum Director at the New-York Historical Society spoke to us, primarily about Clara Driscoll & the “Tiffany Girls,” the 35 women who designed & created Tiffany lampshades. Fascinating.

Westfield Place shopping center opened within Santiago Calatrava's Oculus yesterday, & I was there. The huge lines were at the new Apple store—giving out "Mystery boxes," but I didn't get on line. The most moving part? There was a roped-off area with seats for relaties of those who died there on Ground Zero on 9/11. Among other things, the Oculus dramatically provides natural light to the block-long walkway between Brookfield Place & the Fulton Transit hub.

Took a wonderful birthday walk with Ronnye & Gladys—over the 1848 High Bridge, Manhattan's oldest, and newly opened to the public. We strolled from Manhattan to the Bronx & back without getting our feet wet. Fabulous

“Those weren’t the original names,” Joyce Gold, a legendary conductor of Manhattan street tours, says of three local thoroughfares named for trees: Pine, Spruce, and Cedar Streets. “During the Colonial period, and even during the American Revolution, when the British made New York their capital, mos…
