🇺🇸 the Mount Vernon Hotel, Museum and Garden, located at 421 E61st Street, in the residential area of Sutton Place, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. In fact, it dates back to the end of the 18th century, in the context of a newly born Republic. It was the residence of Colonel Smith, who named it the same as the property of his commander, George Washington, in his honor. After the colonel's death, it became a hotel, frequented mainly by the middle class of travelers, and its turtle soup was very popular. It went down in a fire in 1826, was restored and, after it had hosted the Standard Gas Company for a few years, its demolition was proposed. The building, however, was acquired by the Colonial Dames of America, who created a museum within which there are reconstructions of typical eighteenth-century environments, such as a beauty salon, a tavern and a bedroom
