Warren Elwin | Making My Way Back

Steven Amedee welcomes Elwin’s return to New York for the first time in 10 years. Based in Aotearoa New Zealand, Elwin is an abstractionist who paints with paper, cutting and manipulating isolated forms from old fashion magazines, juxtaposing them back together to find new lyrical compositions of chance.

1912, my grandfather, John Amedee Maserjian, an Armenian immigrant from Turkey, watched over his friend’s photographic shop, Arax Studios in Poughkeepsie, NY, while the friend was away. With little English and no photographic knowledge, John managed as he was able, at one point unknowingly using a roll of photographic film to tape a tag to a box, leaving him wondering where the sticky side of the supposed tape was. When the friend did not return, John stayed with the shop, becoming a self-taught photographer and business-owner of what he eventually expanded into the Arax Photographic Company. For 80 years and two more generations, the family-run company thrived, becoming the region’s premier photographic retailer and service-provider for its community’s residents and businesses, including professional photofinishing, camera and equipment sales, portrait studios, and picture framing. This month my cousin found these never before seen photos of the shop on Main Street. The merchandise changed over the years, but the store looked largely the same through the final days when I worked there in the 90’s.

Bullet Shih
1969 - 2020

Focusing on the human figure without the use of models, Shih's portraits of imagined figures comment on the solitariness of the human condition. Born in New York City to a Chinese father and American mother of Eastern European descent, the artist resided in Budapest for the last twenty years of his life. We are very pleased to announce a very special exhibition featuring the work of Bullet Shih at Steven Amedee this fall. Stay tuned for details. This series of 6" x 4" paintings on paper are shared courtesy of Shih's family.

Please join us tonight, 07/21 from 6pm - 8pm, for the opening of “Ser Manguezal" a photographic and video exhibition by Eliseu Cavalcante. The project was inspired by Josué de Castro's 1967 book "Of Men and Crabs” De Castro was a Brazilian geographer, physician, writer and activist against world hunger. Cavalcante's ongoing photography project examines those who depend on the mangrove ecosystem to survive and the delicate relationship between humans and this particular ecosystem. This project seeks to recognize the hard-working crab hunters of the mangroves while making their work more visible and to bringing awareness about the importance of mangroves to the environment.
