The Future of British Housing: A Call to Action

In an article by Jessica Douglas-Home written exclusively for Arts and Crafts Tours, she argues that the future of British housing is in jeopardy. She cites examples of how architects and developers are ignoring residents' wishes and needs, and how planning committees are becoming increasingly unresponsive to public concerns.

Douglas-Home argues that we need to return to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, which emphasized the importance of beauty, craftsmanship, and harmony with the natural environment. She calls on architects and planners to "reconsider their priorities" and to "put the needs of people first."

I believe that Douglas-Home makes a strong case. We need to take action to protect our communities from the harmful effects of poorly designed and built housing. We need to demand that architects and planners listen to our concerns and work to create homes that are beautiful, functional, and sustainable.

If you are concerned about the future of British housing, I urge you to take action. Contact your local planning committee and let them know that you want to see more beautiful, functional, and sustainable homes built in your community. You can also support organizations that are working to protect our built environment.

Together, we can make a difference.

"Our tour sought to put the Arts & Crafts Movement in its long-debated context by seeing where it came from and where it went, as well as by studying glorious examples of it. But we didn’t stop with Gothic Revival when establishing its origins, we went medieval to see and touch the sort of wonderful stone and wood carvings so admired by Ruskin and Morris."

Our Story - Arts and Crafts Tours

With over 25 years of experience, we offer personalized, meticulously-crafted small-group tours of 19th- and 20th-Century art and architecture in Europe and America.

Arts & Crafts Tours has developed and offered visits to private homes and collections in Great Britain. Exclusive engagements with artists, architects, designers, scholars, curators, collectors and authors specializing in British arts & architecture that impacted Europe and America over the last 150 years.

Many of our current programs are offered in conjunction with museums, architectural, preservation and other cultural organizations, they are usually open to the public. If you are looking for something special, we are happy to prepare an itinerary for individual travelers, or to develop a specialized, escorted tour for small groups of from 6 – 12 people that will be designed to satisfy specific interests.

As seasoned travel providers, we know the standards that our (mostly American) travelers need and have come to expect. And you have not only the most knowledgeable guides, but you also have a variety of guides each of whom will spend a half day, a full day or a couple of days with the group which guarantees that there will be ample time to chat with them over lunch or dinner or drinks. This greatly enhances the experience and the knowledge you gain by traveling with us.
