Yesterday I had the pleasure of touring with a young Hamilton fan and her grandparents, from Michigan. We did Manhattan in 8 hours:
• Financial District
• Hamilton's haunts
• Chinatown
• Five Points
• Midtown
• September 11 Memorials
• and topped it off with a walk in Central Park!
You can have all this when you hire me for a full day! Email [email protected]
Rockefeller Center went up in the 1930s, when there was still a British Empire. Rockefeller honored Britain by naming this building after the empire, and putting the nice touch of a symbol of Britain over the side door.
Rockefeller Center spans three blocks with two 'nation' buildings on each block. Starting from 51st Street, the International Building, then the statue of Atlas, and then the Italia Building.
From 50th to 49th, British Empire Building, followed by la Maison Francais. In between them, the famous sloping garden which leads down to the ice skating rink was dubbed Channel Gardens for the English Channel.
And between 49th and 48th streets, the Switzerland and the American buildings. The Swiss building stands out from the others by being faced in greenish Swiss marble, rather than the Bedford Indiana limestone of all the other buildings.

I love my work, which is walking around the city telling stories of our history, food, culture, architecture, to people from around the world.
Here's the story of those tunnels in Central Park.
The park was built before either the electric light or car were invented. How do you design a park to keep people safe from being run over by a carriage without headlights at night?

Illegal vendors back on the Brooklyn Bridge
A few days after the Brooklyn Bridge first opened in 1883, a deadly stampede occurred after someone screamed. 12 were killed; many were injured.
The Guides Association of New York, with that history in mind, convinced city government that allowing dozens, perhaps hundreds of vendors, to take up precious walkway on the Brooklyn Bridge was a possible recipe for a repeat of the stampede.
They were permanently removed last January.
Or so it was thought.
A few went back up there after their eviction. Now their numbers have grown, and the walkway is again narrowing due to hundreds of Chinese souvenirs being placed in the way.
Vendors must leave the Bridge, for the safety of those who walk it.
