It's Alexander Hamilton's birthday!
I conducted my 'Hamiltour' yesterday, guiding grandparents from Michigan and their granddaughter, who's a big Hamilton fan. We visited Federal Hall, Wall Street, Bowling Green, Evacuation Day Plaza and other sites associated with Hamilton's career in the military and politics.
They bought flowers (imported from Holland, fittingly for Nieuw Amsterdam) and laid them at the graves of Alexander Hamilton, his wife Eliza, and her sister Angelina, who is buried on the other side of the cemetery with her upstate Schuyler and Livingston relatives.
Today's photos are from Trinity graveyard in lower Manhattan, and the Hamilton Grange, a farmhouse constructed for Hamilton on his up-island land in Harlem, two years before his death. The group photo is in Chinatown, where we had lunch after the long walk.

Upper Manhattan offers a 20-mile view up - not down - the Hudson. The first photo is the Tappan Zee Bridge, 12 miles north of Manhattan's northern tip.

This island is shaped sort of like your right foot. Battery Park is at the heel. This end would be a very long big toe.

To continue this analogy, Sugar Hill, in Harlem and Washington Heights, is like the foot's arch that blocks views to the south. Even the tallest skyscrapers can't be seen from here. We see the majestic cliffs of the New Jersey Palisades, Riverdale and University Heights in The Bronx, instead.

Of course you should see all that downtown has to offer. When you want the rest of Manhattan, see me. Write me at [email protected].

Congestion pricing started today. Some thoughts:

It really only costs me an extra three bucks.
I'd been thinking that a drive down from beautiful uptown Manhattan would run me nine bucks. But someone pointed out that subway fare down and back would be $5.80. So I don't mind paying an extra $3.20 for the speed, privacy and safety - except from other drivers - that I get by driving. Also, my car has better heat than the subway. Smells better too! A little.

If you can vote on my city, I can vote on yours.
People on Long Island and in New Jersey who don't like NYC feel that they should have a voice in this discussion. I feel the same. And, mutually, that New Yorkers should decide on Ocean County NJ teacher pay. And whether to lower the speed limit in Smithtown.
No I don't. If they don't live here, they can sue. Nine suits have been shot down in 2024. Now either drive or take the train. Stop complaining.

Whose pollution is it, anyway?
Governor Murphy of New Jersey stated that Manhattan's famous pollution would be sent over to NJ. What he won't admit is that it's never been our pollution at all. It comes from 975,000 cars from Jersey that come here every morning. They should STAY in Jersey and pollute their own air instead of ours.

As crashes decrease, so might insurance costs.
Someday my insurance policy for doing walking tours might cost less, if car crashes in NYC begin to decrease. It's been proven that 34% of NYC crashes include out-of-state cars. It would be stupid to say that there's about to be a 34% decline in crashes, but think of the cost savings (hospitalization, car repair, property repair) a mere 10% decrease would bring. People's life savings sometimes are lost to hospitalization. And/or they're permanently injured and can't make a productive living anymore.

It will get safer to bike.
I love biking. The most dangerous thing about biking is cars. The fewer cars in a given area:
• the less stress on every other driver
• the more drivers can plan moves second by second
• the fewer cars are parked in bike lanes
• the less double parking, which is a biking hazard
• the safer it is for biking overall.

Out-of-state commuters aren't poor.
Arguments have been made that impoverished drivers are gonna suffer. In my driving experience, the majority of vehicles coming out of the tunnels are BMWs, Mercedes and Range Rovers, not 1998 Fords. It's a false argument, made by the same people who point out subway murders as bogus proof that the subways aren't safe.

Congestion pricing will help tourists.
Even if only 5% fewer drivers come into Manhattan, the other 95% are going to help fund the MTA. That's going to help immensely because, for years, tourists have borne the worst that the subways offer.
Repairs are done on weekends. Most visitors are here on weekends. The Subways suck on weekends (see '52% poor' screenshot). The trains are rerouted AND delayed at the same time. All while tourists are trying to figure out the system for their first time.
Maybe, MAYBE, in a few years, tourists will be able to step on the train for the first time in their lives and not have it rerouted.

Fingers crossed.

For those traveling to New York City with kids, this code leads you to Complete Playground, down on Broad Street in the financial district. They gave me a tour of this indoor playground, and it's very impressive.

We all love Christmas windows because of the deep New York City details that are hidden within them.
This current window features an item that can be found in New York City, and which has to do with the Broadway musical Man Of La Mancha.

Which is it?

I love my work, which is walking around the city telling stories of our history, food, culture, architecture, to people from around the world.

Here's the story of those tunnels in Central Park.
The park was built before either the electric light or car were invented. How do you design a park to keep people safe from being run over by a carriage without headlights at night?

It's hard to believe that someone would put this up. And even harder to believe that 238 people would love it.
