Legends abound in Italy, with each town seeming to have its own story where reality and fantasy mingle. One of Liguria's most famous legends is of the San Fruttuoso dragon.
According to this legend, many years ago the beautiful bay where the abbey of San Fruttuoso stands today was chosen as a home by a terrible dragon. The monster ate anyone who tried to pass by, boats began avoiding the bay, and the town became more and more isolated.
One day, shortly after St. Fruttuoso's death, an angel appeared before Justin and Procopius, two followers of the martyr. The angel told them that he would lead them to a beautiful place to build a church in memory of the saint. When they arrived, however, they were greeted by the terrifying dragon! After a grueling struggle, the two men, with the help of the angel, were able to defeat the dragon and build a church in honor of St. Fruttuoso, which remains to this day.

Calabria is a lesser traveled, but breathtaking region of unspoiled coastline, crystal clear sea and rocky areas. 🪨 It was from some of these rocks that the legend of "Scylla e Charybdis" was born. They say that ancient Greek sailors were routinely pushed against a "monster" by ocean currents. This monster was actually a strangely shaped rock, but potentially just as dangerous to the ancient sailors!
😎Today, the myth and mystery has remained, as well as the beauty of these destinations.
