Ben’s Pizza of Soho

If you’re in Soho and craving a solid slice, Ben’s Pizza is a must-try. The moment you step in, you know you’re in for an authentic experience—the Italian music playing in the background perfectly matches the food vibes. I went for the Margherita pizza, and it did not disappoint. The thin-sliced crust was just right, giving that perfect one-bite satisfaction, while the flavors were bold and well-balanced. It’s exactly what you want from a classic NYC slice. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area!

Did you know~
The Times Square Ball Drop tradition began as a way to celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York City and attract crowds to the area. The first ball drop took place on December 31, 1907, marking the start of 1908.

Here’s how it started:
1. Pre-Ball Celebrations (1904): The New York Times moved its headquarters to One Times Square in 1904. To celebrate, the newspaper’s owner, Adolph Ochs, organized a New Year’s Eve fireworks show at the building. This event drew massive crowds and helped establish Times Square as a central celebration spot. However, the fireworks were banned after a few years due to safety concerns.
2. The First Ball Drop (1907): To replace the fireworks, a 700-pound iron and wood ball illuminated with 100 incandescent light bulbs was constructed and dropped from a flagpole atop One Times Square at midnight. The idea was inspired by time balls, a nautical signaling device used in the 19th century to help sailors synchronize their clocks.
3. Evolving Tradition: Over the years, the ball and the celebration grew in scale and sophistication. The ball has been redesigned multiple times, with the modern version introduced in 2008. Today, it’s a geodesic sphere covered in Waterford crystal panels, illuminated by thousands of LEDs.

The tradition has since become a globally recognized symbol of New Year’s Eve, watched by millions in person and on television worldwide.

Did you know ? - that the Citigroup Center was built on stilts due to an agreement with St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, which owned part of the land where the skyscraper stands. The church allowed the building’s construction on the condition that a new church be integrated into the development and that their original site remain largely untouched.

To accommodate this, the skyscraper’s base was designed with four massive stilts placed at the center of each side, rather than the corners, leaving the corner where the church stands unobstructed. This unique design created a cantilevered structure that was both innovative and challenging from an engineering perspective.

The stilt design also contributes to the building’s distinctive appearance and has become one of its most recognizable features. However, this design led to some unforeseen structural concerns after construction, prompting additional reinforcements in the late 1970s to ensure the building’s safety.
