If you need rare time & space to unpack and address big questions, join us in Patagonia Feb 25-Mar 4, 2022! See www.thecompleatleader.com for more details!

The Compleat Leader is not the typical executive development program in a conference room filled with slide-decks and binders. It is also not the typical corporate excursion with the facade of real work.

What's in a name? It is a commonly asked question by those looking at a globe: Why is Iceland named after the cold stuff, but looks green on a map?

In the case of the small Northern island, the legend states that the Viking who first happened upon the land was greeted by a glacier, giving him the impression that it was a land made of ice. In reality, only 11 percent of the land is covered in ice caps and it sits just south of the Arctic Circle...but some names just stick.

Mt. Kilimanjaro stands intimidatingly over the plains of Tanzania. Climbing it is certainly no easy feat, but before you take Africa's giant off of your bucket list, consider the unlikely adventurers who have gone before you:

At the age of 7, an American boy was the youngest explorer to reach the peak of Kilimanjaro. His brother also made the climb at the age of 10! On the other end of the spectrum, Angela Corobeva is the oldest hiker to have reached Uhuru Peak at the age of 86.

Of course, these climbers prepared for the journey, and with proper preparations, you too can tackle Africa's highest peak. Visit our Adventure pages to learn more about our custom tour packages and start planning your ascent.

Resting in the shadow of the mountain of Machu Picchu is the small city of Aguas Calientes.

This little town evokes pre-Columbian Peru, even though it sprang to life only in the 1920s. Made popular at the time as a stop on the recently completed Sacred Valley railway, Aguas Calientes today serves as a hub for a global consortium of adventurers, history buffs, and leisure travelers visiting Machu Picchu. It is worth a visit, even if it's only to stroll down the main street or grab a tasty meal with other adventurers.

On our Inca Trail Adventure, explorers will stop in the town on the way back to Cusco. It is the perfect place to catch up with fellow trekkers after completing the four day hike to Machu Picchu. Learn more on our Adventures Page on our site.

Trekking in Iceland is an experience unmatched by trails in other destinations. One such feature is the unique accommodation hikers encounter along the way during adventures like our Laugavegur Trail trek.

The trail is dotted with mountain huts like the one pictured above, built to shelter travelers from the sometimes frigid conditions found around Iceland's Southern Highland area in winter. While they aren't exactly glamourous, they certainly provide an exciting and rustic alternative to tents or more traditional lodging.

Summiting a mountain and looking out over the surrounding lands with a crystal clear view - it's the stuff of dreams for hikers.

We know there is no exception for our explorers who climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Though we can never guarantee the weather, we suggest trekkers book trips to Mt. Kilimanjaro during the drier months of August-October, or December-February. With fewer clouds, the climate of Tanzania during these months gives adventurers the best chance at catching those once-in-a-lifetime views atop Uhuru Peak, as well as provide a safer terrain for climbing.

To plan your trip to Mount Kilimanjaro during these choice dates, visit our Adventures Page.

You know Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, but what about the rest?

The Sacred Valley in Peru is a treasure trove of culture, history, archeology, and adventure. Trekking routes that were originally crossed by the Inca carve through the Andes, passing rivers, villages, and UNESCO world heritage sites. Travelers will usually pass through Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca, before heading out to Pisac and its ancient ruins, the salt mines of Maras, or the trailhead of the Classic Inca Trail Trek (like we will do). There is much more to see and do around Machu Picchu, and we encourage all of our explorers to consider extending your stay to visit some of these incredible places.

Trolls and elves and ghosts, oh my!

Iceland has a rich history of folklore. Stories of friendly encounters, mischievous pranks, and altered fortunes can be found at every turn when exploring this spectacular country.

With scenery like that found along the Laugavegur Trail, it comes as no surprise that most of this island's folklore is heavily inspired by nature. On our trek through the Southern Highlands, we will hear firsthand some of the stories that this majestic landscape has helped conjure.
