Inspiration Post: This beautifully layered staircase by was part of a complete home redesign, and was one of the only elements that drew from the existing structure. The curve was inspired by the plaster coffered ceiling dome in the entry, which “began the language to the spiral staircase.” This theme of blending old and new together became the theme of the home beyond.

SPAN Project: A double height atrium graces the Harper House dining room, allowing natural light to flood the space. Similar to a gallery, it extends into and connects the more casual, lower kitchen and living area with the formal spaces in the home; an ode to the owners’ living and entertaining style.

Inspiration Post: Discovering the abundant possibility within everyday materials.

This “Studio by the Hill” by uses perforated brick to create a ventilated and airy space within the tropical climate of Western India. The material is both left open for ventilation and filled to create a ubiquitous material language that takes brick, typically monolithic and flat, and transforms it into a lithe and transient design element.

Inspiration Post: This Berlin apartment by Gisbert Poppler is inspired by a “tailor-made suit”; made to “fit perfectly without being the centre of attention”. Teak, lacquer, limestone, and cane are used to separate living spaces from each other visually, allowing the plan to stay open and light to flow through all spaces, while creating differentiation within the program.

Colours, materials, and details were all chosen to accentuate the client’s existing pieces and living style, with kitchen colours complimenting their existing pots and pans, and patterns on the underside of the dining table for a client who loves to lay on the carpet and listen to music.

SPAN Project: As the Core Club prepares for a new chapter, we are taking a look back at the original design.
Like New York City, the Core Club exploits the vertical movement between the floors as well as the potential transformative nature of common building materials. Within the club's five floors a constellation of programs are arrayed from the ground up. Adjacent to the entry to the club, communal spaces such as the theater, dining, and meeting spaces embrace and embody the dynamic nature of the street and urban life. Moving upward, public and communal spaces give way to more personalized, individual spaces and treatments.

Inspiration Post: Tondela Vases made by artist Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, represented by Demisch Danant x Made in Situ, 2022 Barro Negro collection. Noe’s sculptural work showcases a respect for the past, combined with a simplicity of line and an honest desire to create pieces that last. Noe’s approach to design celebrates the combination of heritage, materials, industrial design, natural forms and fine craftsmanship.

Inspiration Post: Saltmarsh House by , featured in Magazine, is designed around a high-performance thermal envelope; the house consists of a long living and dining space framed by three smaller chambers – a kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The house was designed to "float" above the coastal landscape of the site, and is characterized by four pyramidal ridges of deep brown patinated copper which form its roof. Designed with a mechanism involving motorized counterweights, the windows can drop down below floor level and open up the entire southeast facade, allowing for natural airflow across the building.

SPAN Project: The Dangene Institute Spa at the Core Club blends the Core Club chamfer with inspiration from iconic architecture. When conceiving the space, the Pantheon's Oculus and Gaudi's Casa Mila were main sources of inspiration. Critical spa surfaces - the ceiling and the floor - were important to highlight as they are focal points during a treatment. Parquet wood flooring inspired by Gaudi's Casa Mila was rendered in a custom, triangulated pattern that references the Core Club chamfer, flattened. Treatment cabinets and hallways show an exploded version of the chamfer. In this case, centuries of architecture come together to help create both identity and a grand sense of place.
