HOT TAKE from Brontë: The sound of crickets can be beautiful! Embracing silence and allowing those crickets to chirp can help you find ease in your conversation or presentation. While it may feel awkward your first few tries, it's well worth the exploration: Silence allows you to breathe, which provides oxygen to the brain, which helps you gather your thoughts more consciously, which then puts you back in control over your speech. Nothing exudes cool confidence like someone who thinks about their response before they answer ... so let those crickets chirp :)

Albert Mehrabian, a body language researcher, was the first to break down the components of a face-to-face conversation in his book, "Silent Messages." He found that communication is approximately 55% nonverbal, 38% vocal, and only 7% words! That means you’re communicating with a lot more than the words you speak. How interesting is that?

One of the best ways to acquire a new skill is to learn with others embarking on the same venture!

A live setting with other people introduces the unexpected variables you're likely to confront the “day of.” In these sessions, you'll develop practical skills that benefit you professionally and personally for the rest of your life — and you can do it alongside supportive individuals who are here for exactly the same reason.

You’ve been waiting for this moment. Your manager finally says, "We should grab dinner sometime. I want to hear more about that idea you had and discuss your future." But when you sit down, you realize that without knowing anything about kids, tennis, or this season of Ozark, this is getting awkward fast.

Imagine feeling relaxed and self-assured in these situations. Our coaches can provide tools to speak with ease, charm, and knowledge. We help you navigate the balance of social + work, so you can shine as professional and personable even outside the office!

Podcasts as a medium continue to explode. If you haven’t been on a podcast this week, you’ve probably at least listened to a few…dozen. (Just us?)

There’s a certain kind of frustration involved in listening to a podcast with terrible audio. A number of people who podcast without a professional setup don’t recognize the artistry of working with a mic!

We coach on how to improve your technique when recording as well as use the full range of your voice. The New York Speech Coaching team will show you how to achieve your best sound!

Can you say the following 5 times fast? Use a tongue twister like this to warm up your articulators before a speech or in the morning. “Articulators” are the parts of your vocal anatomy that are involved in the production of speech sounds: your tongue, your teeth, your jaw, and your lips. Let us know if you nailed it!

Often used in place of "and so forth" or "blah blah blah," saying "et cetera" is a common way of covering, "you know...and other stuff." Our word of caution, though: watch out for that first syllable! The conventional pronunciation is ET, not EX. When you get to this word, just picture ET!

According to Merriam-Webster, “extemporaneous” is an adjective that comes from Latin ex tempore ("out of the time") and joined the English language during the mid-1800s? The word “impromptu” was improvised soon after that.

Both of these words can describe off-the-cuff remarks or speeches, but this is not the case when referencing the art of public speaking. Teachers of speech will tell you that an extemporaneous speech has been thoroughly prepared and planned but not memorized, whereas an impromptu speech is one for which absolutely no preparations have been made.

So if you run out of time to get to all of the material in your “extemporaneous” speech, it is likely that you’ll need to come up with an “impromptu” ending!

“I very much enjoyed working on my mental blocks and bad habits. I was able to improve not only my public speaking skills but also my life skills in general. Many thanks!”

We love hearing thoughts from our Speaking for Today Class clients! This client was able to change habits that most of us experience when it comes to speaking.

Speech affirmations: "My voice deserves to be heard." "I have something important to say." "What I say matters."

"Public" Speaking isn’t just when you are giving a presentation at work or school, but in every interaction you have throughout the day: at the grocery store, calling customer service, and dinner with family. Use these "lower-stakes" circumstances as practice for situations in which you may feel nervous.

Speech Affirmation: "I will focus on my passion in connecting my audience with my message. This doesn't need to be about ME today."

Silence can be impactful. Yet many of us feel uncomfortable in silence. Between background noise, constant access to music, and phone notifications, we are always hearing something. Spend some time this week in silence. Spend 5 or 10 minutes getting comfortable with the lack of noise. It is a nice way to quiet the nervous system - and your mind will thank you!

Did you know? Having fear of public speaking is called Glossophobia.

08/12/2021

An impromptu speech is a speech that is made on the spot - without much or any time to prepare. In life, this can happen when you attend special events, like weddings or celebrations. Casual conversations, too, are a form of impromptu speaking!

Reminder: Your voice deserves to be heard. Don’t let the fear of speaking up stop you from speaking at all.
