These photos were taken in the Norton Basin of Edgemere/Bayswater communities of Far Rockaway. I've sailed to every nook of Jamaica bay, as well as many other areas in NYC and the Norton Basin is one of the best harbors in terms of protection and natural beauty within the entire city. However, there's no infrastructure for getting folks out on the water nor for securing the land to dissuade pollutuers. Furthermore, we need to get the youth connected to the bay because nature is the mother of all mothers and she will teach us proper manners for a successful existence.

Sailing camp 2025 is on! Sign up will open in the next few weeks.
Right now our camp is a half day schedule, but we are in talks for a possible collaboration with one Rockaways surf schools in order to create a full day experience of both surfing and sailing!

Dreaming of blue skies and warmer days. Boat work had already commenced in preparation for opening day this spring. Lots of wood to varnish and various other methods for essentially making our vessels look shiny. Can't wait to get back into the swing of things!

Oyster season has arrived! I'll have fresh peconics every Thursday. Pickup at Marina 59 or stop by this Friday from 6 to 9 and with some world class live jazz while watching the sunset. $1.50 an Oyster for pickup. Can do shucked to-go also.

After school sailing is in effect starting Sept 10th for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday every week until mid October. We meet at marina 59 at 3pm and sail until 5pm. Ages 9 to 16. You can sign up online at sailrockaway.com or contact directly.

Every direction we sail creates a new perspective on the water. The wind, tides and clouds change every day to keep the moment new and alive. Sunrise bird tours, secret beach rides, sailing 101 clinic and all private lessons and all other offerings are going strong until November.

We have 2 more weeks of big fun with our youth sailing program. Theres still space available until we wrap up last week of August. After that we will have the Autumn edition of Youth sailing on weekends until mid October. In the meantime, all tours and lessons will continue until November.

Theres so much to do on the water but so little time. Three more weeks of Youth Summer Sailing until September where we will transition to weekends as well as offering an after-school Sailing clinic for kids.
Spots still available for August though. Water and air temperature couldn't be more inviting right now for a day on the water.

Joco Marsh, nearly half the size of central park, is NYCs largest marsh, right here in Jamaica Bay. When the ride is high and the wind is right, it's possible to sail through the myriad creeks within the marsh. The nesting birds of the marsh have left for the season but northern species are starting to trickle in as they migrate through the area from the north.

Canoeing in NYC?? Yes! We are a city of water and theres many hidden places of beauty that are best explored by paddleing. All of what you see here is just a stones throw from our dock on 59 street in rockaway. We rent canoes with all the safety gear you need plus more to make sure your experience is dialed in. Sunrise bird tours all this week. We only offer this when the sunrise coincides with high tide so we can slip into the marshes where the most wildlife exists. Jamaica bay is part of the the apex of what's known as the "New York bight". The unique characteristics of the NY bight are such that massive amounts of migrating birds and fish congregate within it in because of its coastal geography and increased interaction within the gulf stream. In essence the NY bight is the northern coastal terminus of the gulf stream before the stream heads eastward into the Atlantic, which is why swimming in New England, even in the summer, is rather chilly. The moonrise sail last night was magical. 3 or 4 times a month we have the opportunity to catch the rising full moon somewhat early in the evening. We don't like to sail too late for the moon so we time it for very select dates.
