⛵️ On November 20th, MMNC presented a special education program to the residents of Esplanade Senior Living. This program focuses on Katherine Walker, who was appointed the official lighthouse keeper of the Robbins Reef Lighthouse by President Harrison, and the variety of lighthouses found around Staten Island. Residents enjoyed a presentation by our lead educator, Mark, followed by a watercolor painting activity based on the Robbins Reef Lighthouse!

🛟 If a vessel sinks and survivors make their way to a lifeboat, the lifeboat radio may be the sole means of communication. The lifeboat radio is designed to float and is colored orange for maximum contrast with the ocean’s surface.

When in use, a ground wire is hung into the water and the antenna is pulled out. The radio is hand crank powered for transmission and reception. Communication is by Morse Code with transmissions being either automatically keyed or keyed by the operator.

This particular model of lifeboat radiotelegraph transmitter from our collection was made by the Radiomarine Corporation of America and dates back to the 1950s. Imagine operating this thing in the middle of the ocean!

🌅 In August, MMNC returned to Sunrise Senior Living to share our “History of Navigation” program with the residents!

📖 This was a guided lesson in the history and technology of navigational tools, such as the sextant, compass, and quadrant, as well as a look into the journeys of three famous navigators.

🔎 Participants got an up close look at some of the navigational tools in the museum’s collection. They even got their very own compasses!

🏝️Happy National Beach Day!

As Staten Islanders, we’re lucky to be surrounded by beaches with such rich histories. Did you know that South Beach was once known as “The Riviera of New York City”? In the early 20th century, South Beach was advertised as “The Greatest of All Summer Resorts 30 Minutes Sail over New York Bay.”

Make sure to get out to the beach before summer is officially over!

☀️ Last week, we visited our friends at A Chance In Life () to share two of MMNC’s educational programs with their teen participants!

🆘 During the first program, students learned about the origin of Morse Code and how to use the Morse Code alphabet. The teens participated in a translation activity and even had the opportunity to type their name and hear it translated into Morse Code.

🧭 Our Famous Black Navigators program focused on a variety of individuals who made history through their accomplishments, some of whom flew planes and others who sailed, from the 17th century to the present. One of the navigators even had ties to Staten Island!
