"We did the Around Manhattan Holiday Bruch Cruise and really enjoyed our experience. The boat is beautiful throughout with lovely blond wood and windows galore. It was decorated tastefully for Christmas. I feel like this was the best way to see the Statue of Liberty. No lines, no security concerns, no stairs! The food was really good along with our mimosas. She's really coming together! Our boat builders at Scarano Boat Building have been busy working on Yacht Manhattan III. This week she's getting 2 layers of 18 ounces of fiberglass with epoxy resin. This process seals the bottom and provides a stable substrate for a yacht quality finish. We love how this picture puts her size into perspective.

Seal Report: During our last Seals & Winter Wildlife Cruise this past Sunday we were able to spot more than 30 harbor seals hauled out on the rocks alongside Swinburne & Hoffman Island in Lower NY Harbor, plus possibly one gray seal! We saw thousands of Black Scoter birds, as well as a Surf Scoter! Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Red-breasted Merganser, Double-crested and Great Cormorant (the latter an uncommon winter visitor), and an Iceland Gull, which is fairly rare around these parts and only here in the winter were also spotted!

So why do seals haul out on rocks? We had some theories, but wanted to get the facts from our Urban Naturalist Guides, Gabriel Willow and Russell Jacobs. According to Willow, "Seals haul out to rest and sun themselves, and scratch and groom their fur. Also it's safer from predators than sleeping in the water! Great White Sharks love to eat seals." And Jacobs added that seals typically haul out at low tide, "They’d be more likely to be in the water at high tide, I imagine, because the fishing tends to be better inshore but over the course of their lives they leave the water for all kinds of other reasons - escaping predators 🦈, breeding, raising pups, socializing."
