I'm excited to return and share my expertise with the SBA NJ Regional Innovation Cluster (NJRIC) Small Business Accelerator, kicking off its new cohort on April 22. I’ll be leading a Human Resources session on July 1, 2025, an essential skill for small business owners to master as they grow and scale.

This free, five-month accelerator developed through a collaborative effort between BCT Partners, N-Touch Strategies, Covenant Business Concepts, and Kean University's Center for Cybersecurity is specially designed to address the unique challenges small business owners in the AI, Cybersecurity and Information Technology (IT) sectors face in stabilizing their organization, ensuring its security and preparing it for exponential growth.

This capacity building initiative aligns with my commitment to equity, economic empowerment and business innovation. Every business owner should focus on their numbers as their top priority. It is not possible to make any business decision that does not affect your numbers. Every single area of your business is affected. If you're not paying attention to your Key Financial Indicators (KFI) and your Return on Investment (ROI) on every single investment (purchase), you will not succeed. (1) Know your target market, where you can find them. Think about their problems you can solve, their needs you can meet, or their obstacles you can remove.

(2) Be able to prove the benefits of your products and/or services.

(3) How you are better than or different to the competitors should be clear enough to cause them to switch to you.

Most business owners who experience growth and scaling clearly understand the importance of unlearning. We are our own worst enemies when we make decisions that are not informed. That necessary information may be 180° away from what we consider to be usual and normal. Fear is the factor that we may not accept as the reason for our uninformed decision-making, and refusal to unlearn, but it is. We are also stubborn, believing we know enough. That is not possible. Knowlege is eternal. Understand how liberating unlearning can be and start developing those strategies for your business that translate to growth and scaling - and there is a difference between these two.

What benefits and features are you offering your market? Are they solving your target customers' problems or concerns. You must develop a Unique Value Proposition that proves the value of your offering and increases the willingness of your customers to buy. Your sales will suffer if you are not meeting the needs of your customers.

Who is your target market? If you are investing in advertising to the wrong target you are throwing money away. Focus on developing a profile or persona of your target market by using demographics, psychographics, geographics, and technographics. You should not make assumptions about your target market, you must be certain.

Do you have a business plan? Do you set goals for your business? If your goals are not SMART, you may find yourself going around in a circle with a business that is not growing.

Business goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time bound.

If your business is no different from your competitors, why would any customer/client leave where they are and buy from you? Your customers/clients are now purchasing from your competitors. Look for them there. Find out what they want and not getting from your competitors and help them purchase from you by giving them what they want. What they are looking for and not getting can become your differential advantage and increase your sales.
