Cat’s In The Cradle - Harry Chapin

The late Harry Chapin was born on this day in 1942. He grew up in the Brooklyn Heights section of Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He would become one of America's best singer/songwriters in the 1970's with songs like "Taxi", "W.O.L.D." and this one which was his most popular. He devoted much of his time and effort to social activism, including raising money to combat hunger in the United States. Sadly, Chapin was killed in an automobile accident on the Long Island Expressway in 1981 while on his way to perform at a free benefit concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. He was only 38 years old. #OnThisDay

A Slice of Brooklyn’s Original Christmas Lights Tour of Dyker Heights

You haven’t seen Christmas lights until you've been to the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn! Each year, the homeowners go all out to create the phenomenon known as “Dyker Lights”. This clip goes back to 2012 when our owner, Tony, and Lucille Spata, the woman who started the tradition in the 1980s, appeared with Evette Rios on ABC's "The Chew". Our 18th annual tour starts up on December 1st! It’s the original tour of the famous lights that’s been featured on Travel Channel, Today Show and Good Morning America! It departs nightly from the Union Square area of Manhattan. Everyone receives candy canes at check in; we play festive Christmas music on the bus; you get to see the homes in other areas of Brooklyn as well, like Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, and everyone receives a souvenir fridge magnet at the end of the tour. We also show vintage Christmas TV specials from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams and more on the screens of the bus on the ride back to Manhattan. Back in 2010, our owner Tony appeared on Samantha Brown's "Holidays in New York" special on Travel Channel. A Brooklyn resident herself, Samantha asked Tony to show her around Dyker Heights. Tony had started the original Christmas Lights Tour of the decorated homes in Dyker Heights a few years earlier. Besides showing her the neighborhood, Tony took Samantha to meet Lucille Spata, the woman who started the Dyker Heights tradition back in the 1980s. It was 8 years ago this week in 2016 when the word "fuhgeddaboudit" was added to the Oxford English Dictionary! The dictionary defines the word in this way: “In representations of regional speech (associated especially with New York and New Jersey): ‘forget about it’, used to indicate that a suggested scenario is unlikely or undesirable.” For many people unfamiliar with the term, it was this scene from "Donnie Brasco" that helped them understand it better. 😉

Steeplechase Park

Steeplechase Park operated in Coney Island from 1897 to 1964. Created by the entrepreneur George C. Tilyou, it was the first of the three large amusement parks built in Coney Island, the other two being Luna Park (1903) and Dreamland (1904). Of the three, Steeplechase was the longest-lasting, running for 67 years. This was its most popular attraction: a gravity-powered ride in which people raced each other while riding wooden horses that glided along metal tracks over a long and curving course. #FlashbackFriday

The 2024 season of Friday Night Fireworks in Coney Island begins tonight! Every Friday, from now until Friday, August 23rd, the fireworks will go off at 9:45pm. Whats the best place to view them? Right in front of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, either on the boardwalk or on the beach!
