Happy 84th Birthday to Neil Diamond who was born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn on this day in 1941! He attended Erasmus Hall High School for two years, during which time he was a member of the Chorus along with Barbra Streisand. When his family moved to Brighton Beach, he transferred to Lincoln High School where he graduated as the captain of the fencing team. He's sold more than 130 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. And the Broadway play about his life, “A Beautiful Noise”, has received rave reviews. He once said, "Brooklyn is not the easiest place to grow up in, although I wouldn't change that experience for anything."

We're sad to hear that Tommy Brown passed away yesterday. Born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, Brown was the final living member of the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers; the team for which Jackie Robinson debuted at first base on April 15, integrating the National League. Additionally, Brown was the last living major leaguer whose career began during World War II. With able-bodied men in short supply on the home front, Brown debuted for the Dodgers in '44 at the age of 16. In 1945, he hit a home run at the age of 17. He's still the youngest player ever to homer in the major leagues. He would go on to play with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs before retiring. Tommy Brown was 97 years old. May he Rest in Peace. 🙏

Did you know that the first commercial pasta making machine was invented in Brooklyn? Ignazio De Francisci, a respected engineer from Sicily, founded Consolidated Macaroni Machine Corporation in 1914 to provide pasta-making machinery for the growing pasta-producing industry in the United States. The factory was located at 156-166 Sixth Street in Gowanus. Ignazio’s family owned a pasta factory in Palermo, Sicily called Pastaficio Virga. Using his knowledge of pasta making, and his ability to create machinery, he found a niche. As thousands of Italians came to America following World War One, the need for pasta increased. Working with Italian pasta entrepreneurs, the De Francisci was able to supply this growing market with modern production equipment. Ignazio patented a pasta-making machine which increased the speed of production, cut the drying time from two days to a few hours, and made the dough safer. Pasta would continuously flow and thus be more sanitary and there would be less waste because it did not have to be moved from one machine to another. The name of the company was changed to DEMACO (De Francisci Machine Corporation) in 1952; and the rest, as they say, is history.
