This young lady was on our Pizza Tour yesterday with our tour guide Angela. She specifically took this photo because she wanted to pose like the Taylor Swift lyric, “Sitting on a bench in Coney Island”. 🙂

The late author Betty Smith was born Elisabeth Lillian Wehner on this day in 1896 in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. She grew up poor in a tenement that served as the setting for her book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It’s a semi-autobiographical novel that focuses on an impoverished, but aspirational, young girl and her family living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn during the first two decades of the 20th century. To say that the book was a success is an understatement. They made a movie of the book two years later in 1945. Betty Smith was 75 years old when she passed away in 1972.

Happy Birthday to actor Steve Buscemi who was born in Brooklyn on this day in 1957! By the time he was a teenager, the family moved to Valley Stream on Long Island. He couldn't stay away from Brooklyn though. He returned and has been living in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn for the past 30 years! He's appeared in such movies as "Fargo", Reservoir Dogs" and "Trees Lounge" just to name a few. He also starred in two HBO shows: as Nucky Thompson on "Boardwalk Empire" and Tony Soprano's cousin, Anthony Blundetto, on "The Sopranos".

It was 47 years ago today, on December 12, 1977, that the movie "Saturday Night Fever" premiered in NYC! Both the movie, and the soundtrack, took the world by storm! It made a movie star out of John Travolta, and it introduced the world to neighborhoods in Brooklyn such as Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. Take a look at some of the behind the scenes photos below while they were filming the classic opening scene under the el on 86th Street. It’s just one of a few locations from the movie that you’ll get to visit on our Pizza Tour!

The late Harry Chapin was born on this day in 1942. He grew up in the Brooklyn Heights section of Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He would become one of America's best singer/songwriters in the 1970's with songs like "Taxi", "W.O.L.D." and this one which was his most popular. He devoted much of his time and effort to social activism, including raising money to combat hunger in the United States. Sadly, Chapin was killed in an automobile accident on the Long Island Expressway in 1981 while on his way to perform at a free benefit concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. He was only 38 years old.

The late country music singer/songwriter Eddie Rabbitt was born Edward Thomas Rabbit on this day in Brooklyn in 1941. The son of Irish immigrants, he was a proficient guitar player by the age of 12. His career began as a songwriter in the late 1960s, composing hits such as "Kentucky Rain" for Elvis Presley in 1970 and "Pure Love" for Ronnie Milsap in 1974. He helped to develop the crossover-influenced sound of country music prevalent in the 1980s with such hits of his own as "Suspicions", "I Love a Rainy Night" (a #1 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100), “Drivin’ My Life Away” and "Every Which Way but Loose" (the theme from the film of the same title).

You haven’t seen Christmas lights until you've been to the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn! Each year, the homeowners go all out to create the phenomenon known as “Dyker Lights”. This clip goes back to 2012 when our owner, Tony, and Lucille Spata, the woman who started the tradition in the 1980s, appeared with Evette Rios on ABC's "The Chew".

Our 18th annual tour starts up on December 1st! It’s the original tour of the famous lights that’s been featured on Travel Channel, Today Show and Good Morning America!

It departs nightly from the Union Square area of Manhattan. Everyone receives candy canes at check in; we play festive Christmas music on the bus; you get to see the homes in other areas of Brooklyn as well, like Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, and everyone receives a souvenir fridge magnet at the end of the tour.

We also show vintage Christmas TV specials from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams and more on the screens of the bus on the ride back to Manhattan.

If our tour doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit then your name might as well be Ebenezer Scrooge!

Be sure and purchase tickets early. Tours always sell out!
