The late actor Abe Vigoda was born on this day in 1921 in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. He was best known for a number of roles, most notably his portrayal of Salvatore Tessio in "The Godfather". He also appeared briefly as Tessio in “The Godfather Part II” in a flashback sequence at the end of the film. He moved on to a successful television career during the 1970s with the role of Phil Fish in the ABC comedy series "Barney Miller”, and then the spin-off series "Fish" with Vigoda in the leading role.

Happy Birthday to David Geffen! 🎂 The businessman, producer, manager, studio executive, AIDS activist and philanthropist was born in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn on this day in 1943. His mother owned a corset shop, Chic Corsets by Geffen, just off of New Utrecht Avenue. David attended New Utrecht High School as well as Brooklyn College.

Bazooka Bubble Gum was first marketed shortly after World War Il in the U.S. by the Topps Company of Brooklyn, New York. The gum was packaged in a red, white, and blue color scheme. Beginning in 1953, Topps changed the packaging to include small comic strips with the gum, featuring the character Bazooka Joe and his gang. You were able to collect the comics and send then in for prizes.

We're sad to report that Patsy Grimaldi has died. He passed away on Thursday night of natural causes. He was 93. A legend in the world of NYC pizza history, he opened up Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge back in 1990 after working for his Uncle, Patsy Lancieri, up in Harlem. He took over a former hardware store in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn and created his temple to pizza, believing that a coal-fired, brick oven produces the best results. And he was right. Along with his late wife Carol, they created a destination for pizza lovers right here in Brooklyn, with one of their most loyal customers being Frank Sinatra. This photo of Patsy and our owner Tony was taken back in 2005, right before we started our Pizza Tour. Including Grimaldi's on the tour was a no brainer, as exhibited from the smiles his pizza still brings to our guests who get to experience it for the first time. He will forever hold a place in our hearts. May he rest in peace.🙏

Did you know that the New York Aquarium in Coney Island is the oldest, continually operating aquarium in the United States? It wasn't always located in Coney Island, though. Opened in 1896, it was originally located at Castle Clinton in the Battery Park section Manhattan. It was moved to its current location in 1957 when Robert Moses built the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan.

Happy 60th Birthday to comedian Chris Rock! 🎂Though he was born on this day in 1965 in South Carolina, his family moved to Brooklyn right after that. They settled into the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, where he grew up. At an early age, he realized he could make people laugh. When he was 18, Rock was discovered by fellow Brooklynite Eddie Murphy at New York's Comedy Strip. A small role in Murphy's "Beverly Hills Cop II" in 1987 was Rock's film debut. In 1990, he followed Eddie Murphy's footsteps by joining the cast of Saturday Night Live.

The late Harry Chapin was born on this day in 1942. He grew up in the Brooklyn Heights section of Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He would become one of America's best singer/songwriters in the 1970's with songs like "Taxi", "W.O.L.D." and this one which was his most popular. He devoted much of his time and effort to social activism, including raising money to combat hunger in the United States. Sadly, Chapin was killed in an automobile accident on the Long Island Expressway in 1981 while on his way to perform at a free benefit concert at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. He was only 38 years old. #OnThisDay

This clip goes back to 2012 when our owner, Tony, and Lucille Spata, the woman who started the tradition in the 1980s, appeared with Evette Rios on ABC's "The Chew". Our 18th annual tour starts up on December 1st! It’s the original tour of the famous lights that’s been featured on Travel Channel, Today Show and Good Morning America! Back in 2010, our owner Tony appeared on Samantha Brown's "Holidays in New York" special on Travel Channel. A Brooklyn resident herself, Samantha asked Tony to show her around Dyker Heights. Tony had started the original Christmas Lights Tour of the decorated homes in Dyker Heights a few years earlier. Besides showing her the neighborhood, Tony took Samantha to meet Lucille Spata, the woman who started the Dyker Heights tradition back in the 1980s. It was 8 years ago this week in 2016 when the word "fuhgeddaboudit" was added to the Oxford English Dictionary! The dictionary defines the word in this way: “In representations of regional speech (associated especially with New York and New Jersey): ‘forget about it’, used to indicate that a suggested scenario is unlikely or undesirable.” For many people unfamiliar with the term, it was this scene from "Donnie Brasco" that helped them understand it better. 😉
