Today is !

Spumoni is a classic Italian dessert made of 3-layers of ice cream: pistachio, almond and chocolate. And the best is found at L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn.

Ludovico Barbati, the L&B in the name, started selling spumoni door to door from a horse-drawn wagon throughout Brooklyn in the 1930s before opening the storefront in 1939.

It’s the quintessential Summer treat you can enjoy year round, and most folks don’t think twice of indulging in a spumoni while they’re at L&B on our Pizza Tour!

We were sad to hear that Charlie Moss passed away earlier this month. The late, Brooklyn-born ad executive helped produce successful ad campaigns including the iconic "I heart New York" tourism ads in the 1970s. The actual logo, seen below, was invented by graphic artist Milton Glaser. That logo has become synonymous with New York. It’s what Charlie Moss did with it that really took it to the next level. He created a series of commercials (link available in the comments section) that helped bring NYC back from the brink of financial disaster to a top tourism destination. He also created the ad campaigns for Alka-Seltzer (“Plop, plop, fizz, fizz”) and Bic lighters (“Flick your Bic”). Charlie Moss was 85 years old.

It’s time to play Just One Word! That’s where we post a photo and you describe it using just one word. This week’s photo is of the pool on the roof of the DUMBO House in Brooklyn. Remember, just one word. GO!

73 years ago today, on August 11, 1951, WCBS-TV in NYC televised the first-ever color broadcast of a baseball game! đŸ“ș It was the first game of a doubleheader at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn between the Boston Braves and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Dodgers beat the Braves 8-1 in the first game but lost the second game 8-4. Unfortunately, it nearly went unwatched since most people had only black-and-white televisions.

On this day in 1960, the song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie We**ie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" became the #1 single in the United States. It would stay at #1 for a week. Sung by Brian Hyland, the song was actually written by Paul Vance from Brooklyn whose real name was Joseph Paul Florio. He got the idea for the song one day when he took his family to the beach. His 2-year-old daughter, Paula, was wearing a two-piece swimsuit for the first time and was shy about being seen when she emerged from a dressing room.

Someone just brought it to our attention that Christmas is 5 months from today! We know, we know; but believe it or not, many folks are already planning their trips to NYC in December. Naturally that made us think of our Christmas Lights Tour of Dyker Heights! It’s the original tour of the area that we started back in 2006. The tour’s been featured on Travel Channel, Good Morming America, the Today Show, Good Morning Britain and more. Don’t settle for all the copycat companies in Manhattan that have popped up over the years that just drop you off in the area. Our guides are all native Brooklynites who know the history and the homeowners, so you’ll personally be escorted around. The tour’s fun for the whole family. Just look at all the happy faces below! For more info, or to purchase tickets, please visit: asliceofbrooklyn.com/bus-tours/christmas-lights-tour/. Hope to see you on the bus!

It's !🎠
Also known as Carousel Day, this day was created by the National Carousel Association to mark the registration of the first patent for a carousel design in 1871 by William Schneider of Davenport, Iowa. A highlight of amusement parks, these circular rides are still widely popular across America and around the globe. Here in Brooklyn we've got three: the B&B Carousell (yes, they misspelled that way years ago and it has remained that way) which is now on the Coney Island Boardwalk that was built in 1906, the Prospect Park Carousel located in Prospect Park that was built in 1912, and Jane's Carousel in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn that was built in 1922.

While Brooklyn isn’t the largest of the 5 boroughs (that would be Queens which is 109 square miles), Brooklyn’s still pretty big. How big? Compared to Manhattan which is 22.5 square miles, Brooklyn is 71 square miles. That’s over three times the size of Manhattan! Next is Staten Island at almost 60 square miles followed by the Bronx which is 42 square miles. Manhattan is the smallest.

The late actress Barbara Stanwyck was born Ruby Catherine Stevens in Brooklyn on this day in 1907. She attended Erasmus High School for a just a short time as she had big dreams and was soon acting. She changed her name (Barbara was the name of her character in her first play and Stanwyck was the last name of a fellow actress) and in 1927 Hollywood came calling. Besides a wonderful career in film, she would also have a career in television starring in Big Valley, The Thornbirds and Dynasty.
