Cooking Across Borders with the League of Kitchens

March 11, 2025 7:00pm - 8:00pm

The founder of New York’s beloved cooking school joins special guests to celebrate the culinary expertise of women and immigrants from around the world.

Food speaks a language that transcends cultures. In 2014 Lisa Kyung Gross founded the League of Kitchens to help empower immigrant women to share their culinary expertise and culture through hands-on workshops in their homes and online. Kyung Gross’s unique cooking school blends storytelling with practical cooking advice. A dream-team of women from around the world welcome students into their homes, teaching family recipes from Mexico, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Afghanistan, India, Argentina, Japan, Iran, and beyond. The new The League of Kitchens Cookbook invites readers to bring the classes into your own kitchen.

In-person registration for this event has sold out, but livestream tickets are still available. A limited number of standby tickets may be available on the night of the event.

Women Reading Dangerously: Teaching About the Fight Against Censorship

March 12, 2025 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Learn about the historical struggle for information on reproductive rights & the fight against censorship with our new curriculum guide.

The fight for information about reproductive rights has been an enduring one. Learn how Anthony Comstock’s vision of censorship had a lasting impact on American society and how women of the 19th and 20th centuries fought back by demanding greater freedoms in their political and economic lives. Explore this case study and others in Reading Dangerously: Censorship and the Freedom to Read in 20th-Century America, a new curriculum guide developed by NYPL’s Center for Educators and Schools, which includes tips for teaching with primary documents, ready-to-use discussion questions and activities, and historical context essays—designed to help teachers support middle- and high-school students on exploring the history of censorship. Plus, explore Banned: Censorship and the Freedom to Read, the Library’s new online exhibition that highlights key conflicts over censorship: https://on.nypl.org/4ikzPQo

History has shaped Harlem into the cultural beacon it is today, and understanding its past helps us appreciate its resilience. One of the pivotal moments in Harlem’s history was the Harlem Riot of 1935—considered by many as the first modern race riot in the U.S.

Why does this matter today? The Harlem Riot of 1935 was not just a reaction to a singular event; it was the boiling point of systemic oppression and economic disparity. Understanding this history empowers us to learn from the past, challenge injustice, and build a more equitable future.

The brothers became stars of the Harlem Renaissance era, frequently appearing at The Cotton Club, where they performed alongside legends like Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. They took Hollywood by storm, starring in iconic films such as Stormy Weather (1943), where their legendary staircase dance routine remains one of the most celebrated dance sequences of all time.

Despite the racial barriers of their time, the Nicholas Brothers shattered ceilings, earning the admiration of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who called their performances “the greatest dance sequences ever filmed.” Their legacy lives on, inspiring generations of dancers, from Broadway to hip-hop.
