Dreaming of hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc? 🇫🇷🥾🏔️ SAVE THIS POST! Here are 5 things you’ll need to know…
🌦️The prime hiking season is relatively short, mid June to mid September, and you’ll need to be mentally and physically prepared for all types of conditions! You can expect everything from barren rocky terrain to vast green valleys and forests. On previous hikes, we’ve worn micro spikes and trekked in snow and been in shorts in the scorching sun - all during the same week!
💁🏼♀️ Be ready to embrace the alpine mountain culture! This trek is one of the oldest in the world, and the region is the birthplace of modern mountaineering. A lot of the mountain huts and auberges have been family owned and operated for generations, and haven’t changed much in that time. Having local guides gives the most authentic experience and allows you to understand the rich history (and to know where to stop for fresh local cheese along the way)!
🗺️ There are several route variations on the Tour du Mont Blanc. All of them circumnavigate the legendary Mont Blanc peak (the highest in Europe!), however your exact route will vary depending on accommodation, conditions, and weather. (Another reason local guides are clutch!)
🥾Train for LOTS of up AND downhill. The three most famous col, or mountain passes, are at the borders where you’ll hike to THREE countries 🇫🇷🇮🇹🇨🇭, but in between there’s still lots of ups and downs. Gauge the difficulty of the days by elevation gain and loss, not mileage!
🏔️ Since you’re staying somewhere new every night, this hike takes a lot of prep and planning and can be a logistical nightmare. There are a limited number of auberge and mountain huts along the routes, and they book up fast, like over a year out! That’s why we take care of all that (AND luggage transfers!) on our TMB Adventures.

Make a Game Plan 🗓️
When you should start training depends on 3 main factors:
1) The trip’s itinerary
2) Your current activity level
3) The amount of time you have in your schedule to train
*For most multi-day hikes with lots of elevation change & challenging terrain - Kilimanjaro, Peru, Patagonia, Cotopaxi - reasonably active women would be wise to allow 3 months!
Break-in Your Gear 🎒
The gear you’re taking on your trip should accompany you on your training hikes for at least a month before you leave! With footwear, start even sooner.
Prep Your Legs for Up & Downhill ⛰️
Start with just a few flights 2-3 times per week - up, down, and sideways. Yes, sideways! This works a completely different set of muscles.
Strength Train for Stamina 💪🏼
Hiking is a full-body activity, especially when carrying a pack, trekking poles, and navigating rock-strewn mountain paths. Stronger muscles = better stamina and reduced risk of injury!
Get Outside and HIke! 🥾
To prepare physically and mentally for the challenging - and rewarding - terrain, you may need to get a bit creative. This is especially true if you live in a place where the highest hills are barely bumps.
Stay Positive & Visualize Your Goal ✨
What you’re doing is a big freaking deal, and even though you’re excited about your upcoming adventure, it may bring up some uncomfortable feelings. Consider working with our coach to help you navigate what bubbles up during the pre-trip journey!
