🥳🎂 HAPPY 11th BIRTHDAY TO WHOA! 🎂🥳

We can’t believe we’ve been sharing adventures together for 11 years - OVER a decade! In some ways it feels like it’s been a lifetime (we can hardly remember our lives before WHOA). In others, it feels like a nanosecond. (Seriously, where is time going?!)

Ever since our first birthday, we’ve celebrated our special day with cake and champagne, and we use it as a time to reflect back on where we’ve been and look ahead to where we’re going. It’s become a tradition here at WHOA, and this year is surely no different!

We can’t say it enough—we are who we are and where we are because of YOU.

Thank you for everything. Here’s to 11+ more EPIC years 🥂 We can’t wait to see where we go next together!

WHOAlum & Writer Kim Merritt reflects on her experience in Mongolia this past June.

“I’m typically an over-planner when it comes to travel, but for the past 4+ years I’ve been in a chapter of family hardship that has forced me to let go of my Type A ways. During this time NOTHING has gone according to plan. I can never predict when it will be a good time to leave home, so I’ve had to learn to truly live life one day at a time, to constantly pivot and change even the best laid plans.

In a way, Mongolia was the perfect adventure for this moment in life because it shared a similar vibe. It was spontaneous, unpredictable, and there was a constant need to lean into the unknown.

The mix of active and road trip days was perfect for pushing myself while having the chance to sit back and take it all in. We experienced all four seasons in a matter of hours, drank our weight in milk tea, and hiked unmarked trails deep into the Altai Mountains. We got to plant trees that will help reverse desertification for years to come, and herd livestock on the backs of motorcycles and bicycles. Those same bicycles took us 40+ miles across the Gobi Desert. We broke through language barriers with laughter, music, and games of Uno and broken telephone.

It takes a certain kind of person to embrace Mongolia’s essence. Someone who doesn’t need to know exactly where they’re going next, what they’ll be doing, or how they’re going to do it, but can still have faith in knowing it’ll be worth it. If life has taught me anything lately, it’s that sometimes you just need to let go and let things happen.

During our last homestay we had a celebration dinner with our guides, sharing heartfelt stories about our time together over traditional Mongolian food and generous pours of vodka. We went around the table, each pulling a random card to reveal an inspiring quote to take home from our adventure. It seemed fitting that this was mine: Say yes and you’ll figure it out afterwards.”

✨I knew that I would love the experience no matter what, but I didn’t think I would be so incredibly sad when it was over. The girls I met, the places we went, and the food we ate were all just so amazing. I was sad that the trip had to even come to an end. This was my first WHOA trip, but definitely not my last. I do think whatever trip I decide to go on next has a lot to live up to! Isabella, Peru ✨

You’ve had a fantastic adventure 🏔️. Built new friendships👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏿, witnessed mind blowing scenery🤯, experienced new cultures and challenged yourself to hit personal goals💪🏼. Then suddenly, you’re back at work. The post trip blues can hit you hard😩. We know, we feel it too!

🚨DREAM ADVENTURE ALERT!🚨

THE MAGIC OF ICELAND 🇮🇸

If Iceland has been on your list, we’re here to help you check it off with NEW September 2024 and 2025 dates for our 7-day Iceland Adventure!

Why do we love Iceland in September? For starters, you’ll get 12+ hours of daylight for exploring, every day ends with a chance to see the northern lights (if we’re lucky!), and there are way less crowds than peak seasons—unless we’re talking sheep. Did you know there are more sheep than humans in Iceland? Talk about wild!

Plus, we’ve added new activities to our adventure-packed itinerary, which ventures far beyond the Golden Circle. You’ll hike to beautiful views, snorkel between tectonic plates, soak in geothermal pools, climb ice walls, and have a truly unforgettable experience—all in just one week! Here’s a small taste of what to expect on this adventure.

🥾 Trekking past waterfalls and lava fields in the Highlands

⛏️ Ice climbing on a glacier between two active volcanoes: Katla and Eyjafjallajökull (say it with us: ay·uh·fyaat·laa·yow·kl)

🤿 Snorkeling between tectonic plates at the Silfra Fissure

🐧 Hanging with wildlife and hiking a volcano on the Westman Islands

🔥🧊 Relaxing in Iceland’s famous geothermal pools and lagoons

This adventure is coming up fast, but luckily all you have to do is say YES and click the link in our bio to sign up! Oh, and maybe start practicing your Icelandic.

🇵🇪 LIVE FROM PERU! 🇵🇪

One of our favorite parts of our Peru adventure is coming “home” to Chinchero. It is the village our Lead Guide Elizabeth’s (Affectionally known as Mama Sherpa) grew up in.

Yesterday we got to spend time with some of the lovely ladies who live in the village. They taught us about the traditional weaving and hand dying techniques they use to create beautiful textiles like blankets and purses.

Join us in Peru and Chinchero this October! Link in bio for more details.

Our adventures empower you to try new experiences. Whether that be 🏄‍♀️ surfing🏄‍♀️ in the Galapagos or 🚴‍♀️ biking 🚴‍♀️ in the Gobi Desert, we always encourage our adventurers to try new things, and are by their side for the journey.

So, what are you waiting for!? Join us on one of our next adventures, you may end up being in your element just like Kat! 🔗 Link in bio for remaining 2024 and 2025 dates.

🇵🇪LIVE FROM PERU!

Our crew is having a blast hiking through the Andes!

Our team had a solid first day on the trail and made it to camp in great time! Everyone was in awe of the view of the Salkantay Glacier next to us.

As we woke up early the next morning we took on the windy Salkantay Pass, and everyone was so strong as we reached our highest point of the trek. 💪💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿

We made it to camp and welcomed the lower elevations and warmer temps!

Stay tuned for more updates from Peru!

☀️Not to mention, we’ve had the BEST weather we could ever ask for. 🙏🏽

🎂 We celebrated Daniela’s birthday with cake made by our talented mountain chef! Seriously impressive!

⛰️Machu Picchu blew us away, and we got to hike Wayna Picchu too!

✨We have a NEW Group Adventure Leader!✨

Please welcome the newest member of our GAL team, Alyssa Whoaa! Thats not a typo, that’s really her last name. In 2 weeks she’s headed to Kilimanjaro for the first time and we’re thrill to have her join the WHOA Fam! 🏔️

Growing up in New York City, WHOA GAL Alyssa was always enamored with the richness of different cultures. Her adventure career began in college where she traveled to six continents studying happiness across cultures.

Shortly after, Alyssa moved to Maui, Hawaii and started the evolution to becoming an outdoorsy person finding new ways to experience the beauty of the world around through hiking, diving, cliff jumping, climbing, and any other way to engage in nature. Since then the adventures have continued, furthering Alyssa’s experience of the great outdoors. She has since taken on grand adventures, including thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, living and working several seasons in Antarctica, guiding backpacking trips in the Sierra and Grand Canyon, and undertaking several polar ski expeditions.

When Alyssa’s not adventuring in a remote region, she spends her time working in mental health, specifically supporting individuals in their eating disorder recoveries as an eating disorder recovery coach. Cheerful and upbeat, she can often be found laughing, smiling, and telling cheesy jokes!

Fun Facts about Alyssa!
🏠 HOME BASE: Sometimes NYC, sometimes Maui, sometimes Chicago
💭 DREAM TRIP: Solo and unsupported cross-country ski expedition to the North Pole
🍿GO-TO TRAIL SNACK: literally any gummy candy but preferably Trader Joe’s Scandinavian Swimmers or Natural Confectionery Company gummies
🦄 ANIMAL ALTER EGO: definitely a unicorn
🎶 THEME SONG: Best Day of My Life - American Authors
📖 FAVORITE QUOTE: “People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.” – The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

3x WHOAlum Deb reflects on finding her love of hiking and powerful experiences she’s found in the outdoors.

“I was a super late bloomer, not coming to hiking until my 40’s. I’ve always had a conflicting relationship with being active or athletic because I was trying to make my body move a pace that wasn’t mine, and feeling very inhibited and fearful because of fat phobia. It’s not fun to be doing an outdoor activity but feel like the slowest one, or having to push harder to keep up with the group.

It wasn’t until I moved to the Bay Area, and had easy access to nature and a community of like minded, like bodied people to enjoy the outdoors with, that I was able to make that internal shift to start to enjoy hiking. There’s so many beautiful trails that were easy to get to. It became natural for me to enjoy a hike during a break from work. That’s never anything I would have thought would be true for me.

One of my first profound outdoor experiences was learning to scuba dive with a group of plus size women with avid diver Liz Nickels of Big Adventures. I remember floating in the ocean on a starry night listening to whale songs after diving, an activity that I wrongly believed was only for people in smaller bodies. It was magical, and that still stays with me 20+ years later.

Climbing Kilimanjaro with the was another powerful experience for me. It was the first time I had community organized around doing an adventure, never really believing big adventures were actually for people like me. I know our trip inspired a lot of people and that feels really good.

Growing up q***r and fat has always been about finding and creating community so I could feel at home in the body I’m in. It’s a big burden to feel targeted for discrimination, ridicule or stigma. Being outdoors in a supportive community who gets you and celebrates you being you is such a balm for the heart.

I love that I never gave up or thought it was too late to start loving the outdoors. Seeing that I could really change and find a passionate connection to being in nature, has opened the world to me, helping me think what else might be possible?”

After 4 days of being off grid in the Altai mountains we finally heard from our Mongolia crew!

With wildflowers in full bloom they took in the magnificent views of the valley and surrounding mountains on daily hikes. During one hike they found a patch of remaining snow and made snow angels and had a snowball fight!

There were impromptu games with their host family and they learned how gers are built and how beautiful wall hangings are created. They also tasted homemade curds, cheese and butter from the yaks and goats grazing outside their gers. And of course, Asker and his daughter Aigerim shared their eagle hunting skills with the group!

On the way back to civilization they got a flat tire, but that allowed for our adventurers to spend a little more time in the wilds of Mongolia!

2x WHOAlum Spoo (they/she) reflects on their connection to nature and powerful outdoor experiences.

“The outdoors has always brought me peace. It’s also where I feel a connection with a power higher than myself. It inspires my creativity. It’s where I feel fully alive.

The wild spectacle and grandeur of the outdoors has always inspired me to go where my heart wants to go.

When I was a kid growing up in small-town India, I used to climb up a small hill for physical training with my dad, sister and occasionally my mom. I have very fond memories of doing that, walking the streets, crossing a lumber yard, passing a small railway station, then climbing up the hill and enjoying the view from the top.

The outdoors is a great unifier, amidst all the differences between us. It provides a singularly common experience. It’s also where people are their most natural selves. It’s special to find your people and adventure together towards a common goal.

A solo backpacking trip to Sahale Glacier in North Cascades National Park is one of the most powerful outdoor experiences I’ve ever had. It took place during an agonizing phase of life. It was magical to hike to the base of the glacier, set up camp, sleep under a full moon and to be woken up by mountain goats at dawn.

Climbing Kilimanjaro with WHOA, was the most powerful, in terms of pushing me mentally and physically until the summit. That was unforgettable.”

Fun Fact: Only 5% of the Gobi Desert is sand dunes. The other 95% is covered with fossils, steppes (dry grasslands), mountains, and a shallow layer of gravel that overlays granite, slate, and other rocks.

Over the past 4 days our adventurers in Mongolia have been taking in everything the Gobi Desert has to offer. They’ve biked through rain storms, slept in gers, planted trees, and herded animals on motorcycles.

Tonight they’re back in Ulaanbaatar getting a good night’s sleep before their flight to the Altai mountains!

Keep an eye on our stories because this adventure isn’t over yet!

Reflections from our GAL Meganne on finding community and herself in the outdoors:

“When I was in the first few years of finding my true self, I took a solo 3 day cross country ski trip. This was the first activity and overnight trip I had ever taken by myself. It was terrifying, hard, frustrating, and so liberating. I learned that challenging myself in the outdoors helped me get to know myself better.

Finding community in the outdoors is important to me because it improves my mental health. I love getting active outside but I LOVE it especially when I’m surrounded by great friends and family.

For LGBTQ+ community members looking to get into outdoor activities find local groups/meetups. It can be so scary (it is for me!) to attend an event full of strangers learning a new activity. Going will most likely be so worth it, you’ll leave with more knowledge and hopefully a new friend to enjoy the activity with.”
