Friends Forever: The Story of Starsky and Hutch! Friends are friends. Forty years ago, they were starring in one of the most famous TV series, playing two cops and driving a car that became iconic. Today, they are 73 years old, and one pushes the wheelchair of the other. They are Starsky and Hutch.
Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul, the actors behind the beloved characters, have had remarkable careers beyond their famous roles in "Starsky & Hutch."
Paul Michael Glaser, born on March 25, 1943, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, made his acting debut in the television series "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing." However, he rose to prominence as Detective Dave Starsky in "Starsky & Hutch," a role that made him a household name. Glaser also showcased his talent behind the camera by directing several episodes of the show and later directed popular TV series like "Miami Vice" and "Judging Amy." He even ventured into film direction with cult classics like "The Cutting Edge" and "The Running Man."
David Soul, born David Richard Solberg on August 28, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois, found fame as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson. Before "Starsky & Hutch," he starred in "Here Come the Brides" and had notable roles in movies like "Magnum Force." Soul also enjoyed a successful music career, with his hit single "Don't Give Up on Us" reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1977.
The chemistry between Glaser and Soul as Starsky and Hutch captivated audiences from 1975 to 1979. Their camaraderie and the thrilling action sequences, often involving their iconic red and white Ford Gran Torino, made the show a massive hit. The series was known for its blend of crime drama and light-hearted moments, and it broke new ground by portraying a deep bond between two male leads at a time when such depictions were rare.
Off-screen, both actors faced personal challenges. Glaser's first wife, Elizabeth, contracted HIV through a blood transfusion, leading to the tragic loss of their daughter, Ariel, and Elizabeth herself. Glaser's resilience in the face of such adversity, along with his continued artistic pursuits, including a recent foray into painting, showcases his enduring spirit.
Soul, who moved to the UK in the 1990s, found success on the West End stage and made appearances in British TV shows. Despite battling health issues, including COPD and lung cancer, Soul remained active in the entertainment industry until his passing in 2024.
Today, the legacy of Starsky and Hutch lives on. Their story is a testament to the power of friendship, both on and off the screen. From thrilling car chases to heartfelt moments, Starsky and Hutch will always be remembered as iconic characters who brought joy to millions.
