Discover Sugar River Region, the destination organization created in 2022 to develop and promote Sullivan County as a distinct and desirable destination, is thrilled to announce the appointment of Penelope Whitman as its first executive director. A University of New Hampshire alumna, Whitman brings a wealth experience in community development, sustainable tourism development, and destination management. Most recently, she served as vice president of partnership & destination management at Explore Asheville in North Carolina.

The town of Washington was incorporated on December 13, 1776, and was the first town in the US to be named after George Washington. Interestingly, the city of Washington, NC, also has this same claim - yet while their city was founded in in the fall of 1776, it wasn't actually incorporated until 1782. ๐Ÿค” ๐Ÿ’ก

โ›„ Though it seems like many winter events are centered around the holidays, there's actually much to do and see throughout the post-holiday winter season! Some fun after-December events around the region include the Newport Winter Carnival, the Mount Sunapee Resort Slush Cup and Cardboard Sled Race, and of course the Arrowhead Recreation Area NH Cardboard Sled Race in Claremont. There's also endless outdoor fun to be had cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating, and more!

Meriden (located in eastern Plainfield) was the first village in New Hampshire to incorporate a library for residents! ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ“– In the early 19th century, the library consisted of several homes housing collections of books. The "library" was moved to two different buildings before the middle of the century, but both locations were destroyed by fires. Several times more throughout the 19th and 20th centuries the library was moved, and the newest library building opened in 2023.
