The John A. Roebling Bridge, an iconic landmark over the Ohio River, has been around for over 150 years. John Roebling, a civil engineer, designed the bridge, which opened to traffic on January 1, 1867. It is 1,075 feet long, which at the time made it the longest bridge in the world.

“So far, so good” this flooding season..well, compared to seasons past. While the Ohio River did reach the “action stage” of 40 feet this past January 2024, that was nothing compared to the flood of 1937. River gauge levels rose to 80 feet, still the record for the highest crest ever in our city’s long history. On top of the river, which had exceeded the flood stage for a week, temperatures dropped to 20 degrees, and it snowed. This March, we count our lucky stars that the record holder remains in the past.
