It’s that time of year again. Hurricane season is picking up in the Atlantic, so we wanted to share some important information on what this means for sea turtle nests along the coast.

You may see eggs exposed from the nest or washed along the beach, but do not disturb them! Movement of the eggs causes the embryo to become detached from the membrane leaving little to no chance of survival. Further disturbance could affect any membranes that may still be viable.

Sea turtles have a natural strategy for such events. Each female lays several nests along the beach to ensure that at least some of them will be successful. No storm season is a total loss for Florida’s sea turtles. Even in years when Florida sustained direct hits from multiple storms, hatching and emergence success rates were still well within the normal range.

Remember collecting any eggs, shells, or hatchlings is against the law, so it is best to leave everything in its natural place. If you happen to encounter a sea turtle or hatchling washed ashore, please call FWC’s stranding hotline at 1-888-404-3922.

Facts: sea Turtles don’t see the red or amber spectrum as well as the white or blue lights on the beaches at night.

Sea turtle nesting season May 1 - October 31 .
Free red lights provided by at the visitors information center. Donations welcome.

Go Louie go!! I am so glad he was able to get help!!

Meet Louie, the brave male Kemp's Ridley sea turtle 🐢 After being spotted swimming around Navarre Beach Fishing Pier with a fishing pole tangled around his right front flipper, Louie was rescued on May 24th, 2024. The C.A.R.E. veterinary staff made the decision to amputate his flipper, Louie is now receiving top-notch care, including antibiotics, fluids, and daily wound treatment with laser therapy and topical flushes. He's even showing an appetite for blue crab, a promising sign in his recovery journey! Let's keep rooting for Louie's speedy recovery and a bright future ahead! 💙

Yellow flags today!

Good morning!
We are flying yellow flags this morning. We have strong SW winds at 13mph causing choppy surf conditions. The surf is supposed to build throughout the day so we will continue to monitor the conditions, any flag updates will be posted to our facebook and instagram pages. Remember to drink plenty of water and to surf near a lifeguard!
