✨ Shining Bright with a Heart of Service ✨

Last night, the dedicated City of North Bend staff and volunteers had the privilege of hosting the Annual Holiday Lights at Shore Acres—a stunning holiday tradition that captures the magic of the season on Oregon’s Adventure Coast. 💡🎄

The breathtaking display at Shore Acres features over 325,000 dazzling holiday lights, beautifully decorated Christmas trees, and mesmerizing sculptures that illuminate the gardens perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This beloved event wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of the community, businesses, and thousands of volunteers who make it shine brighter every year.

Our City staff exemplified their servant-hearted approach by warmly welcoming visitors, helping with refreshments, and ensuring the magic of the evening was felt by all. This is just one example of how their dedication goes beyond the office to truly serve and uplift our community.

Make it a point to visit Shore Acres this holiday season! The lights will sparkle nightly from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM through New Year’s Eve, and admission is free. Parking is just $5—a small price to experience such an unforgettable tradition.

Celebrate Hanukkah in North Bend!

Hanukkah begins the evening of Wednesday, December 25, 2024, and ends the evening of Thursday, January 2, 2025.

To honor this cherished tradition, a menorah will be displayed on South Flag Island at U.S. 101/Tremont Avenue/Washington Avenue, near The Liberty Theatre, Engles Furniture, and North Bend PowerSports

What is Hanukkah?
Known as the “Festival of Lights,” Hanukkah is an eight-day Jewish celebration of faith, resilience, and dedication. Each night, one additional candle is lit on the menorah to commemorate the miracle of an oil lamp that burned for eight days with only enough oil for one. The center candle, the shamus, is used to light the others.

North Bend’s Menorah
Our menorah, purchased in 2022 using transient lodging tax (TLT) dollars, automatically lights up one candle each night of Hanukkah. TLT funds—collected from visitors staying in hotels, motels, and RV parks—are dedicated to projects that enhance tourism, community development, and benefit both residents and visitors.

Come and enjoy the beauty of this season as North Bend celebrates Hanukkah!

🚧 In September 2022, the City of North Bend - Oregon took a big step toward transforming downtown by acquiring the old gas station and adjacent lot at Highway 101 and California Avenue. Just four months later, the city also purchased the former Stebbins & Coffey Law Offices at 745 California Avenue—all part of a long-standing vision to make downtown North Bend more vibrant, tourist-friendly, and welcoming to everyone!

🏨 How Did We Do It?
These projects were funded using transient lodging taxes—money collected when visitors stay in hotels, motels, RV parks, and more. Oregon law ensures these funds are used for community development, tourism growth, and projects that benefit visitors and residents alike.

✨ What’s Happening Now?

The former gas station, dating back to the 1950s, was cleaned up and demolished. It’s now in transition to become a growing space featuring:
✅ Expanded parking 🚗
✅ A $50,000 T-Mobile stage for community events 🎶
✅ A dog-walking area 🐾
✅ And even more exciting amenities on the way!

The former law offices have been renovated and are now home to the new North Bend Visitor Information Center, the North Bend Main Street Program, and Much More! 📍 Stop by to explore, learn about North Bend, and see the progress yourself:
📍 745 California Avenue

🎉 What’s Next?
A grand opening celebration for the Visitor Center is planned for 2025—and you won’t want to miss it! Stay tuned for updates.

Lessons Learned from Yesterday's Tsunami Warning—Prepare Now

Yesterday at 10:51 a.m., the City of North Bend received a NOAA Tsunami Warning alert—seven minutes after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred approximately 60 miles southwest of Ferndale, California. The Tsunami Warning, the highest level of alert, prompted many residents to take action. Fortunately, the warning was canceled at 11:55 a.m., and no tsunami occurred. However, this event served as a powerful reminder of how critical preparedness is for both residents and businesses in our coastal community.

Understanding Tsunami Warnings

Tsunami warnings are issued by the National Tsunami Warning Center when a tsunami is expected or occurring. These alerts mean it’s time to act —immediately. Move to high ground or inland away from water, as dangerous coastal flooding and strong currents may result. These conditions can persist for hours or even days.

While this recent event did not result in a tsunami, it revealed gaps in understanding and preparation. Some individuals evacuated without knowing whether they were in a tsunami inundation zone. Others were unsure where to go or how to interpret the alert.

Now is the time to ensure you, your family, or your business are prepared for future emergencies.

How to Prepare for Earthquakes and Tsunamis

1. For Residents and Businesses
- Familiarize Yourself with Tsunami Evacuation Zones
- Free printed tsunami maps are available at the North Bend Fire Department (1880 McPherson Avenue).
- Online tsunami evacuation maps are accessible at https://nvs.nanoos.org/TsunamiEvac

Learn to Interpret Alerts
- A Tsunami Warning means immediate action is needed. Move to high ground or inland.
- Stay updated through official channels and avoid unnecessary risk by waiting for confirmation before returning to the evacuation zone.

Configure Your Cell Phone for Wireless Emergency Alerts
- Visit FCC Wireless Emergency Alerts to ensure you receive critical notifications (https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/wireless-emergency-alerts-wea)

Sign Up for Coos County Emergency Notifications
- The Coos County Emergency Mass Notification System (Everbridge) can keep you informed during emergencies. Sign up at https://www.co.coos.or.us/sheriff/page/everbridge-emergency-notification-system

2. For Visitors and Guests
- Look for tsunami hazard zone and evacuation route signs while visiting coastal areas.
- If signs are unavailable, use the online maps linked above to identify evacuation routes in advance.

3. Preparedness for Businesses
Businesses play a vital role in the economy, but many are unprepared for disasters. Ask yourself:
- How would your business operate if your facility were damaged?
- Could your business function without power, internet, or full staff?
- What are the most critical tasks, and who is trained to perform them?

Start by developing a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) or Disaster Recovery Plan to address these questions. Cross-train employees, establish backup systems, and create a clear communication strategy for emergencies.

For more resources on business preparedness, visit Coos County Emergency Management at https://www.co.coos.or.us/sheriff/page/emergency-management

Take Action Today

Preparedness is a community effort. Whether you’re a lifelong resident, a visitor, or a business owner, we all share the responsibility to plan and act before disaster strikes. Yesterday’s warning was a wake-up call. Use it as an opportunity to protect yourself, your family, and your livelihood.

Stay informed, stay prepared, and let’s keep North Bend ready for whatever comes our way.
