Day 1 of posting until we get our sign.

Did yall know Riverfront Park use to be a Rice Plantation?

My name is Akua Page, a Gullah Geechee Binya of North Charleston, SC. I lead tours at Riverfront Park. Last year, I petitioned the park to install a statue or memorial garden near the Dead House.
The Dead House is a historic structure dating back to the 1700s, built by Gullah Geechee people.
The bricks bear witness to the forced labor of enslaved Gullah Geechee people, especially children whose tiny fingerprints are still etched into the clay. The park rangers rejected my proposal for a monument and memorial garden, citing logistics. Ironically, a statue of Persephone, the Greek goddess of grain, agriculture, and death, sits directly across from the Dead House, encircled by a garden. Although the park rangers denied my request for a monument or memorial garden, they agreed to install an interpretive sign at the Dead House to share its history. After a year-long wait, the only sign they installed simply read “Dead House,” failing to provide any historical context.

This disappointing outcome exemplifies structural racism, or what I call “invisible demons.”
While a memorial garden, statue, or interpretive sign may seem like a small step, it’s crucial for telling the complete story of Riverfront Park, including the contributions of all ethnic groups.

Sign the petition and explore the links below to learn more on how you can support the preservation of Gullah Geechee history and contribute to the fight for racial justice and equity in Charleston.

**Happy Hoodoo Sunday!** 🌟

This is your weekly reminder that Gullah Geechee people are descendants of Africans, not Native Americans. It's important to address and correct misinformation, such as the claim that we are Indians. 🙄

Africans played a crucial role in the fight against slavery, often referred to as the Gullah War. This conflict is frequently conflated with the Seminole War because many Africans who escaped slavery joined forces with Native Americans, who were also resisting the same oppressors. Black men, like Abraham (pictured below), were often on the front lines of these battles.

Andrew Jackson himself acknowledged the significant presence of African fighters during the Seminole War, stating, "It is a Negro, not an Indian war," due to the large number of Gullah warriors involved.

Let's all commit to thinking critically and using our 🧠 when we encounter information. Misinformation can be harmful, and it's our responsibility to seek the truth and honor our ancestors' legacy.

Today marks the 285th anniversary of the Stono Rebellion, the first documented battle of the Gullah War, which took place on September 9th, 1739.

The first chapter of my new novel series,
“Gullah Geechee Adventures: Hoodoo Magick” introduces you to Kaya, a Gullah Geechee descendant from the Sea Islands, as she recounts her grandfather’s daring escape from slavery to join the Gullah War.
