Love Ishie moved to Charleston from Nigeria in 1988 on the promise of a basketball scholarship at The Citadel after spending time on the Nigerian national team as a teenager.

Four years later, he graduated with a degree in physical education and has been making a difference in the lives of Lowcountry children through sports ever since.

Love joined the Charleston County Parks in 1994 as a recreation specialist and is now the Community Recreation Athletics Coordinator.

“I like the family atmosphere of the agency and the relationships I’ve been able to build with other staff,” he said. “I’ve built some close relationships and it just feels like people care about you here. It doesn’t matter what division they’re in.”

In his current role, Love assists staff in the Hollywood, Johns Island, and McClellanville areas of the county to organize sports leagues, camps, and clinics. He also orders equipment when necessary and helps facilitate background checks on coaches who volunteer to help teams.

For instance, the basketball program concentrates on developing fundamental skills, teamwork, and leadership, creating a fun, memorable experience for children and their families.

“When the kids get out of school we get them fed, help them with homework, and we get them out on the field or the gym depending on the season,” Love said. “We practice and then we send them home on the after-school bus.”

Among the success stories, Love named William Whitehurst, a child in the program who is now the principal at Marshall Elementary School in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Several other alumni from the community recreation programs still come up to him to reminisce and thank “Coach Love” for how he improved their lives.

“It’s not just about the sports, it’s also about cultivating life skills,” he said. “There are a lot of barriers we’re working to take down, but ultimately it’s about providing a positive experience for kids and families in those communities.”
