Pockets of good fall color in the White Mountains of NH are surrounded but dull areas and large pockets of green foliage. UNH Cooperative Extension helps to explain why.

Today's foliage report - Oct 13, 2023 - comes from the eastern end of Route 112 in Albany, NH, and back to the eastern side of North Conway near Pudding Pond and the Redstone Quarry. While we agree with the many reports of a less-than-stellar foliage season, we would like to point out that there's still plenty of great color to see, however you may need to look a little closer to find the pockets.

The good news is that there is plenty of good color (see our earlier reports, too) and more green foliage left to turn, prolonging the season into late October. The not-so-great news is that we may not see an actual peak this season as much of the foliage has either been slow to turn, been negatively affected by leaf fungus, or has simply dropped early.

The southeastern side of Whites seems to offer the most opportunities for good pockets of color. The first bunch of photos below are from around the Passaconway and eastern side of the Kancamagus Highway. The most rewarding views will come to those who are willing to step out of their vehicles a bit and walk or hike out onto the many trails in the area. We recommend parking at the Albany Covered Bridge, just east of Lower Falls on Route 112, walk out through the covered bridge, and left onto the Nanamogomuck Ski Trail. This will bring you along the opposite side of Lower Falls ... and is our "path-less-traveled" favorite.

Back in Conway, the story of the day is GREEN. Take a look at the photos of the Rattlesnake Mountain Range that runs from Cranmore and Peaked Mountains to the Redstone area of East Conway. Typically, variables such as the length of day, temperatures, and tree species are what signals the foliage to begin turning. Well, we know that the days are shorter ... so has it been the varying temperatures over the past month or so causing this? Are the higher than average temps to blame for the seemingly endless amount of green trees around the Mt. Washington Valley?

Fall Foliage Report - October week 2
As we move towards the middle of October we have seen some explosive color in many areas north of North Conway, such as in Pinkham and Crawford Notches ... while some areas are slightly washed out, such as around Bretton Woods and Twin Mountain. We're getting picky here folks though as most of the color we've seen here in the Whites has been overall fantastic.

If you haven't visited yet, we're guessing that most of the fall color is about 5 days behind a typical White Mountain season so there is still plenty of time. Read on ....

The North Conway area and south are approaching peak yet many areas oddly still have lots of green–such as the Rattlesnake Mountain area on the east Conway side. The 2023 season has been a wet one, and the North Conway area had to withstand two consecutive years of gypsy moth caterpillar infestations. Many trees in this area have not rebounded after putting out two sets of buds multiple years in a row.

Also, there is a leaf fungus becoming more evident in the region (see photos) that will no doubt impact the overall colors. The end result may be less of an obvious "peak" season, however, colors may last a bit longer than normal.

Today's foliage photos (from 10/3/23) are from just south of North Conway in the Conway Lake and Route 153 area from Conway, Eaton, and Freedom - including breathtaking Crystal Lake in Eaton and the Little White Church along its banks.

As peak color approaches from the north above Crawford, Pinkham, and Evans Notches, foliage in this area is just beginning to fill in with more widespread oranges, yellows, and reds. Still plenty of green to turn, but we are seemingly within a week from hitting peak color in this area. So far, there are some slight signs of premature browning (dry leaves dropping) of some stressed trees, perhaps from caterpillar damage in the past couple of years–but certainly not as bad as some had predicted. Overall, the entire White Mountain and Lakes region, even as far south as Portsmouth, has shown signs of brilliant color.

Our next report will be from the peak areas of the northern Whites! Please share and go to www.northconwaynh.com for more information during your stay.

Today's foliage photos (9/27/23) are from the Bartlett side of Crawford Notch (Rt 302), over Bear Notch, to the Conway end of the Kancamagus, to Passaconway Rd.

The upper elevations of Crawford Notch are beginning to show more widespread color; however green remains the predominant color throughout the Notch and Rt 112 (Kancamagus Highway). Though there are wide patches of good color coming in around Bear Notch Rd, green continues to rule the day, especially along the road.

On the eastern, or Conway side of Route 112, there is perhaps 15-20% color at this point, but the majority of foliage remains green along Rt 112 ... even solid areas of green with very little color showing near Passaconway Rd (see pics).

We have read reports claiming widespread color, and this is simply not the case, today, at least. Stay tuned though as it's looking like many areas are on the verge of turning.

Our first fall foliage report of the season begins in the Berlin/Gorham area. We’re beginning to see hints of color, especially around rivers and lakes. Though still 95% green, we’re seeing the same right through the Conways into Madison and Freedom. Share and stay tuned for more! Wiseguy Creative Photography

Lots of news stories recently about the possibility of the northern lights being visible in central and northern NH this week. Here are some quick tips to keep in mind during your quest to see them:
- look north and hope for minimal cloud clover
- move far away as possible from light pollution sources
- get to the highest point possible or in an open field

Thank you to Mt Washington Valley Vibe magazine for these great tips on increasing your likelihood of seeing the lights ...

Red Sox slugger Justin Turner chills out with his pup Thursday with S**o Canoe Rental Company. His day off on the must have worked as he bashed a grand slam and 6 RBIs against the Yanks last night at Fenway. Turner and family stayed locally and made their way to Polly’s Pancakes before heading back down for the game. We hear Mr Turner is quite the generous tipper too! Photo by Kourtney Turner … Go !

May 1, 2023 in Conway, NH Wiseguy Creative Photography This happens when both south and north ends of West Side Rd in Conway/North Conway get flooded by the S**o and Swift Rivers spilling over their banks. Passaconway Rd would be the alternative but the Kancamagus Highway also has some flooding damage and is closed.
