Thank you to all our loyal customers for the overwhelming response to our social media posts about Nancy's pies. Nancy and the entire Hungry Crow staff appreciate the community response to her late mother -- Mary Jane Freeburn's -- legacy to her craft. Because we couldn't meet the overwhelming response, Nancy has promised to bake up another batch of her mother's recipe for Onion Pie. MJ as she was affectionately called created a delicate crust encasing vedalia onions and cheese. Today her recipe has been handed down to her daughter Nancy Lavergne. This unique pie became a staple on the menu at Garnet Hill Lodge for over 40 years.

We also ran out of shepherd's pie, chicken pot pie, mixed berry, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, and apple pie. So let's try this again!

This weekend's grab-and-go menu is chorizo sausage, peppers, and onions, add a box of our regionally crafted Sfolini Pasta for a meal that easily feeds two. You will also find, Pulled Pork mac and cheese plus a vegetarian version with broccoli substitute. and Gluten-free Chorizo Lasagna, add a Tribecca Bakehouse Sourdough Bread Bowl to round out your meal.

We are recommending a nice light beer with spring flavors that we believe is appropriate for this paring. BreweryOmmegang Idyll Days Pilsner would be a nice balance as an unfiltered Belgian style lager, or try Boltonlandingbrewery Sweetbriar Belgian White with notes of orange peel and coriander.

Mary Jane Freebern a resident of North River was a heralded pie maker of North River. Although MJ was acclaimed for her fruit pies, making over 100 pies a week during peak tourist season in the Adirondacks, what she became most recognized for over the years was her Onion Pie, a delicate crust encasing vedalia onions and cheese. This unique pie became a staple on the menu at Garnet Hill Lodge for nearly 40 years.

Today her recipe has been handed down to her daughter Nancy Lavergne and Nancy is crafting this treat at the Hungry Crow Market and Café. If you have been craving onion pie, stop into the Hungry Crow at 290 Main Street between 10 and 5 pm.

This week, just in time for Sant Patrick’s Weekend, grab one of Nancy's “Shepherd’s Pie” a true Irish tradition. Lamb and vegetables simmered in a Guinness gravy topped with horseradish mashed potatoes and broiled to a golden brown.
