How did this wonder of modern nature come about? Why is it still burning?

It all began in 1971, when Soviet geologists were drilling for natural gas. What they found was an underground cavern filled with methane gas that collapsed, forming a huge crater. Concerned about a possible release of toxic gases, the scientists decided to set it on fire, thinking it would burn out in a few days.

But they miscalculated: The shaft held much more gas than expected. Since then, the gas has continued to flow unabated, keeping the fire burning.

Today, Darvaza is more than just a burning pit: it is a postcard of nature’s power, a story of scientific mistakes, and a testament to how something uncontrollable turned into marketing, becoming the region’s main tourist attraction.

Todo comenzó en 1971, cuando geólogos soviéticos perforaban en busca de gas natural. Lo que hallaron fue una caverna subterránea llena de gas metano que colapsó, formando un enorme cráter. On May 8th, we commemorate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, celebrating international humanitarian action. Why this date? It coincides with the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
During the bloody Battle of Solferino (Italy, 1859), Swiss businessman Dunant was shocked by the number of wounded left without medical care. He then organized volunteers to help soldiers, regardless of their side.
In 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was founded in Geneva, and a year later, the First Geneva Convention was signed, establishing protection for the wounded and medical personnel in times of war, and the symbol of the Red Cross was officially adopted.

The genius of the philanthropist Dunant lay not only in his vision of the future, but also in his belief in our shared humanity. He understood that suffering knows no boundaries, and that our compassion should know none either.
Above all, it is a day to pay tribute to the millions of volunteers and staff who work alongside people in need of protection, assistance, health services, social aid, and solidarity.

El 8 de mayo conmemoramos el Día Mundial de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna Roja, y celebramos la acción humanitaria en el plano internacional. ¿Por qué esa fecha? Coincide con el aniversario del nacimiento de Henry Dunant, fundador del Comité Internacional de la Cruz Roja (CICR) y quien recibió el primer Premio Nobel de la Paz.
Durante la sangrienta Batalla de Solferino (Italia 1859), el empresario suizo Dunant quedó impactado por la cantidad de heridos abandonados sin atención médica. Entonces organizó voluntarios para ayudar a los soldados, sin importar su bando.
En 1863 se fundó el Comité Internacional de la Cruz Roja (CICR) en Ginebra, y un año después se firma el Primer Convenio de Ginebra, que establece la protección para los heridos y el personal médico en tiempos de guerra, y se adopta oficialmente el símbolo de la Cruz Roja.

El genio del filántropo Dunant no sólo residía en su visión de futuro, sino también en su creencia en nuestra humanidad compartida. Comprendió que el sufrimiento no conoce fronteras y que nuestra compasión tampoco debería conocerlas.
Por encima de todo, es un día para rendir homenaje a los millones de voluntarios y al personal que trabajan junto a las personas que necesitan protección, asistencia, servicios de salud, ayuda social y solidaridad.
