As the son of a former boxer Jim McNally grew up around the sport. Jim’s father, Bernie McNally, was the New England Heavyweight Champion as an amateur and professional. Bernie retired as the 14th ranked heavyweight in the world with a professional record of 32-2. After his career ended Bernie began training amateur and professional boxers. When Jim was old enough he would accompany his father to the gym and began working out with the other boxers. The following is a list of Jim’s amateur competitions;
1973 – Semi-finalist, Heavyweight, New England Golden Gloves, Lowell, MA.
1974 – New England Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, Lowell, MA.
1975 – New England AAU Heavyweight Champion, Boston Garden. (Last boxer under the weight of 180 to hold that title)
1976 – Silver Medalist, Heavyweight Division, International Youth Games, Montreal, Canada. (Split-decision loss to future World Heavyweight Champion Tony Tubbs in the Gold Medal bout)
1977 – New England Golden Gloves Light-heavyweight Champion, Lowell, MA. Jim represented the United States in international competitions against England, Canada and Yugoslavia. Jim retired from amateur boxing following the 1977 New England Golden Gloves with an overall record of 61-7. Jim signed a professional contract later that year. From 1977 to 1983, Jim had 20 professional fights. An automobile accident resulted in 2 elbow operations and the end to Jim’s boxing career. He retired as the 17th ranked light-heavyweight in the world with a professional record of 19-1. In 1988, Jim and his father (posthumously) were elected into the Ring 4, Massachusetts Boxing Hall of Fame. Since retiring from boxing Jim began training amateur and professional boxers. Jim’s amateur boxers have won various titles including the New England Silver Mitten and New England Golden Glove championships. Jim’s professional boxers have won Massachusetts and New England championships, and one of Jim’s boxers, John Ruiz, won the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World.

My grandson Kayson came over last night. Bernie, Seamus, Kayson and I went to Tokyo Steak House for dinner and Kitty's for desert. Great night!

Kayson came to the gym this morning. He has been coming here for years but boy has he grown. He used to play in the ring and was small enough to climb under the bottom rope. Not any more! Talk about a growth spurt!

Always fun to spend time with Kayson. Check out the attached photo. Wow!

BUSY SATURDAY

The sounds in a boxing gym still get me fired up. The pitter patter of the speed bags, the rhythmic tapping of the jump ropes and the grunts from people hitting the heavy bags are music to my ears.

The gym is packed this morning. Everyone is working hard for 3 minutes with a 1 minute rest. What the rest of the world calls interval training we call rounds.

Check out today's action.

Oh Canada!

We had some visitors at the gym this morning. The "St Catharine's Boxing Team", from St Catharine, Ontario, Canada, is in town for some sparring with local gyms.

What a great group of coaches and boxers. They loved the gym and are adding us to the group of gyms they spar with the next time they come down. Boxing brings people together!

St Catherine is about 10 miles from Niagra Falls. The boxing club has been active for 20 years. We posed for a group photo before they were leaving. Good luck!

The other day some of the young guys were talking about Muhammad Ali. They asked me what I thought of the champ and asked if I ever met him.

I told the boys that when I was in high school I had life-size posters of Ali and Joe Frazier on my bedroom wall. I idolized those guys.

In 1977, following the New England Golden Glove Tournament of Champions the winners got to meet Joe Frazier who was performing with his band "The Knockouts" in Lowell. My father and I had about 5 minutes, one on one, with Frazier. I peppered him with questions about training and diet. My father and him spoke of the older fighters like Joe Louis and Ezzard Charles. It was great.

The boys asked if I ever met Ali and I told them I fought on the same card with him. Initially, they didn't believe me. They knew how old Ali was and when he retired from boxing. But they didn't know that Ali had many exhibitions after retiring.

It was March of 1979. I was scheduled to fight my second professional match against Danny Tavares from Connecticut. It was on the undercard of the exhibition between Ali and former champion Jimmy Ellis. The other main event fight featured Marvin Hagler against Pat Patterson.

This card was produced by legendary promoter Rip Valenti. The morning of the fight I got a call from Rip. He asked if I would be interested in sparring an exhibition round against Ali. "Are you serious" I asked. "Yes I am" responded Rip. I told Rip if I got to spar Ali he wouldn't have to pay me! "No, you'll still get paid but your opponent might not make it".

My opponent, Danny Tavares, was incarcerated. In those days inmates were allowed to box. Apparently something happened at the jail and it appeared that Tavares might not be able to fight. But things eventually got worked out and the fight was on.

I brought my camera in hopes of getting a picture with the champ. But I didn't bring it to the weigh-in because I didn't think Ali would be there. Guess who was the first person I ran into at the weigh-in? You got it! Ali!

I explained to him my camera dilemna. He told me to come to his dressing room after my fight and he would pose for a picture with me.

I had the first fight of the night. It was a very tough four rounds. Tavares was a real good fighter with a ton of heart. I won a unanimous decision.

Ali was laying down resting before his fight when I arrived for the picture with him. He got up and as he was dressing he spoke about my fight and offered some pointers. He was larger than life in so many ways but talking boxer to boxer he was "one of us".

Meeting Ali is one of the highlights of my career, right up there with meeting Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano. The attached picture was taken by Jimmy Ellis.

THURSDAY MORNING BAG DRILLS

We had a full house for bag drills this morning. The gym was packed and the energy was contagious.

The workout consists of a variety of punching combinations on the heavy bag. Instructors demonstrate the combinations for any newcomers. Two minute work segments are followed by 30 seconds of rest. What the rest of the fitness industry calls interval training we in the boxing world call rounds.

Check out today's workout in action. Great group.

Come give it a try!

Today was our seventh and final All Kids Class before the summer vacation. We will resume this class in September.

We started this class during covid. It has been full from day 1 and is one of our most popular classes. It consists of boys and girls 8 to 13. They hit the heavy bag, speed bag and jump rope. We add some core work like TRX or glide discs for a complete workout.

Ann and I posed with today's group at the end of the workout. I will miss these kids. They were a fun group to work with.

Have a great summer everyone. Keep punching!

WEST END GYM REMEMBERED

I accompanied my father to gyms across New England when he was training fighters. I always felt welcomed and accepted because of my father. But they were other people's gyms that we used.

The first time I felt like I was at "my" gym was in 1972 at the West End Gym in Lowell. I had signed up to compete in the New England Golden Glove Tournament of Champions. My father drove me to the West End and introduced me to Arthur Ramalho, the owner of the gym. For the next three years this would be my home away from home.

Arthur and his wife Rita ran the West End Gym for over 50 years! Arthur passed away 4 years ago. He was a special man. He had the gift of making you feel special whether you were the best boxer in the gym or the worst.

The West End Gym was more than just a boxing gym. It was a place that provided an outlet for kids that didn't have many. It kept kids safe and off the streets. The West End taught more than boxing, it taught life lessons.

Mr and Mrs Ramalho had three sons, Artie, David and Joey. When I trained at the West End Artie and David were stablemates of mine. We trained together every day and boy could they fight.

Mrs Ramalho passed away a month ago. I heard about it after the services had taken place. I felt bad and contacted Artie and David. I told them how I felt about their mother and the West End. I asked them to come to my gym as I have a couple of photos with their father on display.

This past Saturday Artie and David came to my gym. They were really impressed with the setup. They loved that there were a lot of kids there. They said it reminded them of the West End and their father's love of working with kids.

We have been open for 9 years. In that time I have interrupted the action a handful of times. I did it Saturday and introduced Artie and David to everyone. I explained our relationship and told everyone that Artie was the New England champion at 106, 112 and 118 pounds, and David was the New England champion at 106. 112, 118 and 126 pounds! They were so good there was one room in their family home that had all their boxing trophies!

I can't tell you how glad I was to have Artie and David to my gym. Everybody came up to them and introduced themselves and had questions about their boxing careers. I know Artie and David enjoyed it.

We posed for a photo before they were leaving. Artie is on my right and David is on my left. Fifty two years removed. The West End Gym closed a year ago but the bonds forged there will never be broken. Long live the West End Gym!

04/11/2024

Layla is only 7 years old. There isn't anything she can't do at the gym. She is amazing on the heavy bag, jump rope and speed bag. Because she is so little it is hard to generate the power necessary to keep the speed bag going. But she does it! And right on rythm! Wow!

THE DIEHARDS

I probably shouldn't have opened yesterday. I mean we were in the midst of a nor'easter. But this is New England. Snow, rain, heavy winds, downed trees and power outages never stopped anyone.

We had four people take the 9:30 am bag drills class. Two of them are from Andover. They lost their power so why not work out. I get it. They are still without power today.

I really thought of closing for the afternoon session as the weather got worse. But I didn't make a notification on my FB page. It wouldn't be fair to people already on their way to the gym.

We had several people work out right when we opened at 3:30 pm. The crowd quickly thinned and as we got close to our 6:30 pm bag drills class we were down to two folks.

Dominic and Will are two of the hardest working gym members. It didn't surprise me that they were here despite the weather. They give it their all from bell to bell. Both of these guys have been training here for a while. There is not a lot of correcting on my part as these two are technically sound.

Check out Dominic and Will doing bag drills. Great job guys!

We have bag drills Monday through Friday at 9:30 am. We also have bag drills Monday and Thursday at 6:30 pm. No experience in boxing is needed to take this class. It is low impact yet a great cardiovascular workout. Come give it a try!

LAW-TOWN IN THE HOUSE

Tonight was a special night at our gym. Members of the Law-Town Boxing Gym came to our gym for sparring.

Jesse and his staff brought four young boxers, two 150 pounders and two 119 pounders. They sparred several rounds with our guys and it was action packed.

You can only spar with guys from your own gym for so long. In order to develop as a boxer you need to box against different styles. That was the intention of tonight's inter-gym workout.

I couldn't have been more proud of our guys or more impressed with the boys from Law-Town. They were real gentlemen. The sportsmanship displayed by both gyms was special.

Everybody posed for a photo after the workout. I hope this was the start of a continuing partnership. Great job guys.

MONDAY NIGHT BAG DRILLS

We have bag drills each Monday and Thursday starting at 6:30 pm. They last a little over 30 minutes.

Tonight we had every bag full. We had a good crew and you could feel the energy. I bark out all the commands and demonstrate the punch combinations to any newcomers.

The entire workout is on the heavy bag. If you choose to go hard on the heavy bag you will find that it will kick your butt. If you go easy it will still kick your butt. Plain and simple the heavy bag is a conditioner like no other.

Check out tonight's action. Everyone left the gym sweating profusely with smiles on their faces. Great job folks!

MONDAY NIGHT BAG DRILLS

Each Monday and Thursday we have bag drills starting at 6:30 pm. They last a little over 30 minutes and are done entirely on the heavy bag.

Tonight every bag was full and you could feel the energy in the air. I bark out the commands and personally instruct any newcomers on the various punch combinations.

You can go as easy or as hard as you want. If you choose to go hard you will find out that the heavy bag is a killer. If you go easy the heavy bag will still be an amazing workout.

Check out everyone during the bag drills. Great crew tonight. They all left sweating profusely with smiles on their faces. Great job folks!

ALL KID'S CLASS

Yesterday was session 4 for our All Kid's Class. We were short several members but we had one of our best workouts.

The kids did three rounds each on the heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope and TRX. Each round was three minutes with a one minute rest between rounds.

Ann and I love these classes. We had twenty kids in our last class. Nineteen of them signed up for this class. Pretty good!

We had everyone pose for a team photo after the workout. Very proud of the progress this group is making. Great job kids!

SOCCER TIME

It must be soccer season. That's because Adam is back for his 30-minute mitt workouts.

Adam is a a soccer coach, specifically a goalie coach. A highly regarded goalie coach I might add. As soon as spring arrives he is on the soccer field for hours on end. To get in shape for soccer Adam comes to the boxing gym!

Adam is from England. In addition to soccer Adam boxed as a young boy. He always thought the conditioning he got from boxing helped his performance at soccer.

Adam has been coming to me for four years. All he does is mitt work. It usually takes a while for the boxer and trainer to develop a rythm with each other. It's like dancing with someone you've never danced with before. But from the moment Adam and I started working it clicked. We are able to get so much out of just 30 minutes. We are both drenched at the end.

Check out the attached video. Good job Adam!

CHHAY FIGHT OFF

I regret to inform everyone that Kimhong Chhay will not be fighting tonight at Lowell Memorial Auditorium. Due to injuries suffered in his previous fight Antony Olvera-Reyes was unable to pass the physical for the title match against Kimhong and had to withdraw from the tournament.

Golden Glove rules do not allow a boxer to claim a New England title due to his or her opponent withdrawing. We immediately notified tournament officials that Kimhong would be willing to jump into the open class if there was an opening in the 112 pound weight division.

Novice class boxers can have up to 10 amateur fights. After that they must compete in the open class. The purpose of the different classes is to prevent an experienced boxer from being matched against a boxer who is relatively new. Novice class boxers fight 3, 2-minute rounds. Open class boxers fight 3, 3-minute rounds.

We should find out over the weekend if Kimhong has a chance to compete at the next level. Keep your fingers crossed. Kimhong deserves an opportunity to compete for a New England title.

CHHAY READY FOR TITLE FIGHT

Kimhong Chhay sparred three hard rounds last night in preparation for his fight this Thursday at Lowell Memorial Auditorium. He will face Antony Olvera-Reyes for the New England Golden Glove, 112 pound championship.

This was the final sparring session for Kimhong. He also worked on the heavy bag, speed bag and jump rope before his nightly routine of situps and pushups. This was the last strenuous workout Kimhong will have before the fight.

Today's workout will be very light. Kimhong will do a couple of rounds each of shadow boxing, jump rope and speed bag. He will work just enough to break a sweat.

Tomorrow is a day of rest. Everything that can be done is done. Kimhong will take a walk and get some fresh air. He has been eating extra carbs for fuel and using positive thoughts and visualization to prepare himself mentally.

The fights start at 7:30 pm Thursday night. Kimhong will arrive at Lowell Memorial Auditorium around 5:30 pm. He will weigh in and get examined by the doctor. We will wrap his hands and have them examined and approved by ring officials. We will be assigned the red or blue corner and provided with fight gloves of that color.

Kimhong has the second fight of the night. He will start his preparation routine at 7:15 pm. He starts with some stretching and then shadow boxing. We also do some mitt work. You want your fighter to have a sweat going before he enters the ring.

Kimhong has come a long way since arriving at our gym. He won the Rocky Marciano Tournament this past summer and now is on the verge of winning a New England title. He has worked extremely hard over the past several months. I hope his dedication and determination are rewarded Thursday night.

Good luck Kimhong!

Congratulations to gym member Nathan Barstow on his incredible season for the Lynnfield/North Reading (LNR) wrestling team.

Only a freshman, Nathan compiled a 19-2 record. He took second place in the sectionals which qualified him for a spot in the states. Nathan took sixth in the states. That qualified him for a spot in the upcoming All States. He is the first freshman from LNR to compete in the All States!

Nathan's success doesn't surprise me. He and his brother Logan are longtime members of our gym and both are very good boxers. They both work extremely hard and are getting better every day! I can't wait until the Barstow boys are Golden Glove age. Watch out!

In the attached photo Nathan has his hand raised in victory. Congratulations Nathan!

REPETITION, REPETITION REPETITION!

Today we had class 6 for our 9 to 13 year olds. One more week and this session will be over. We will take a week off then start another 7 week session.

I was working with the people on the heavy bag when i heard the rattle of the speed bags in the background. I looked over and the four girls hitting the bags were on fire! They were really hitting it!

I grabbed my phone and began recording. Chloe, Harper, Sophia and Charlotte have attended previous classes and their experience is starting to show. These young ladies are really improving.

Check out the video. So proud of this group. Wow!

CHHAY FIGHTS THURSDAY NIGHT

Kimhong Chhay will face Nick Mangiaretti Thursday night at Lowell Memorial Auditorium for the greater Lowell 112 pound, novice division title.

These boxers know each other very well. Chhay defeated Mangiaretti to capture the 112 pound title at the Rocky Marciano Tournament in Brockton this past summer. This was a very close fight and I expect Thursday night to be the same.

The winner of Thursday nights fight will move on to compete in the New England finals against boxers from Vermont, Maine and Connecticut. The loser goes home.

When I was growing up my father and his friend Joe DeAngelis were both former New England champions. No matter where we went people would always acknowledge their accomplishments.

I won my first New England title at the old Boston Garden in April of 1975. I spent four nights in the hospital after my third and final fight of the evening. When I came home from the hospital all of my aunts and uncles, neighbors and friends were there to celebrate. My father and Joe DeAngelis were sitting at the picnic table. I was standing talking to my friends when Joe yelled "hey, why don't you come sit down with the New England Heavyweight Champions". Then it hit me. That was better than any trophy, belt or award of any kind.

For local boxers winning the New England title is the peak. It's something we all strive for. From the time I was 5 or 6 years old I wanted to win a New England title just like my father and Joe DeAngelis. I am so grateful I was able to fulfill my dreams. I want Kimhong to experience that feeling so bad! He's worked very hard and deserves it. Go take it!

CHHAY READY TO GO

This Thursday, January 25th, is week three of this year's edition of the New England Golden Glove Tournament of Champions in Lowell, Massachusetts. Kimhong Chhay has been matched against Andrew Le from the Boston Boxing Club in a 112 pound, novice division bout.

Kimhong has been training at our gym for about six months and has worked extremely hard preparing. He won the Rocky Marciano Tournament in Brockton, Massachusetts this past summer and has continued training since then.

Kimhong is hungry for a New England title. He takes no time off and he is the hardest worker in the gym. He is ready. I hope he can display his skills and be rewarded for his hard work and sacrifices.

Good luck Kimhong!

01/11/2024

Yesterday was week 2 of 7 for our All Kids class. Ann and I had 22 kids in this our largest class. We had 6 stations to accommodate this group including the heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope, agility ladder and trx.

This group is really improving. Many have attended previous classes and it is showing. We have some kids that are doing things with the jump rope that nobody else has done.

Check the kids out in the attached video. When they leave the gym they have red cheeks, are sweating and they have smiles on their faces.
