Saturday Spotlight: Village Pizza of Nyack

For Village Pizza owner Tony Pali, his shop is more than just a pizza joint—it's the culmination of a lifelong passion for pizza, steeped in rich family tradition and guided by a desire for excellence.

Tony’s journey to Village Pizza began in the Bronx, where the he was raised in a family deeply rooted in the pizzeria business. His father, Tony Sr., operated pizza restaurants throughout the Bronx, uptown Manhattan, and later Spring Valley, NY – so the love for pizza was instilled in him from birth. By age 8, he was already making pies, and by 12, he was handling the family craft on weekends and school breaks.

After a brief stint owning his own pizzeria in Mount Vernon in his early 20s, Tony decided to try his hand at the corporate world, working for American Building Maintenance (ABM) where he oversaw a large portfolio of accounts for commercial buildings in the tri-state area for nearly a decade. However, the corporate grind left him unfulfilled, so he left it to go back to what he loved and knew best – pizza.

With a desire to master the craft and create something truly special, Village Pizza opened in 2023.

At Village Pizza, every pie is made with care and attention to detail. "I really try to put the best tasting ingredients into the product. We don’t cut any corners," Tony says. His pizza philosophy, learned from his mentor at Villa Rosa, his father’s Spring Valley pizzeria, is simple yet effective: light crust, light sauce, light toppings. This approach ensures each bite is perfectly balanced, with flavors that linger long after you've finished your slice.

But what truly sets Village Pizza apart is Tony’s dedication to his customers. "I want people to walk out of here saying, 'Damn, that was money well spent,'" he explains. His goal is to create an experience that makes people feel like they're part of something special.

When asked why he chose Nyack as the home for his business, Tony reminisces that he’s had his eye on the village for years – ever since his father owned Villa Rosa. He has always loved the historic, small-town feel where everyone knows each other. Even more notable to him are the people of Nyack, who feels are supportive and genuinely want local businesses, like his, to succeed.

"Being in Nyack has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life," he shares. "It's been one of the hardest years but also the best, because I've been able to establish myself. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of it without my staff, customers, and of course the continued support and patience of my family – my wife, Valentina, my children, Anthony and Antonella, my parents, Tony and Maria, and my sisters, Mariana and Elizabeth. They all drive me to make them proud.”

With ambitions to expand not only within Rockland County but also closer to where the Tony resides in Weehawken, NJ. He envisions growing his business by investing in his staff, turning employees into partners, and continuing to refine his craft.

One exciting initiative on the horizon is a "Taste-Off" event, where customers will have the chance to compare the current sauce with a newer version. Their feedback will help shape the future of Village Pizza, ensuring it remains a place where the community's voice is heard—and where the pizza only gets better.

You can visit Village Pizza at 64 S. Broadway, 11am-10pm 7 days a week. Follow them on Facebook (Village Pizza of Nyack), Instagram (), and check out their website (https://nyackvillagepizza.com/) for their latest news and promotions.

Saturday Spotlight: Lemmonade Shop

Clothing and closets have always played a significant role in Lemmonade Shop owner Laura Graham's life. Growing up in Nyack as the child of a single mom, Laura became an avid secondhand shopper out of necessity. Her early experiences taught her the value of quality, affordable fashion. Laura went on to spend years helping friends find the perfect outfits for various events, figuring out "what goes with what" in their closets, and coaching them through clean-outs and purges. This natural affinity for clothing and closet organization led her to realize that her true calling was in the fashion and wardrobe area.

Lemmonade opened its doors in July 2023 after Laura spent seven years as the clothing partner of the shop-share Archive Home on S. Broadway. It has quickly become known as a destination where women can find high-quality fashion while feeling part of a supportive community.

“The Lemmonade woman is someone who loves unique pieces – things not typically found at the mall,” Laura says. “She understands the value, both financially and environmentally, of shopping secondhand.”

Laura's work at Lemmonade goes beyond selling clothes; it's about empowering women. She takes great satisfaction in helping women find the right pieces for significant life events, supporting them through life or career changes, and adding a touch of fun to their busy lives. She understands that clothing is deeply personal and much more than just daily attire. It's a reflection of identity and confidence.

"I love and believe in women,” Laura states. “Their personal power and ability to conquer anything has helped me recognize and appreciate those traits in myself."

Recently, the shop moved to the center of town – collaborating with Trilogy Consignment to bring a new energy to Lemmonade. Together, the two shops plan community events like Moms Night Out and a Secondhand Fashion Show, turning the store into a gathering place as much as a shopping destination.

In a world dominated by online shopping, Laura deeply appreciates those who choose to shop locally. She believes that customers are rewarded with unique pieces at the best prices. Nyack's creative and supportive secondhand community, with events like the Secondhand Shop Hop, continues to grow, drawing customers from beyond Nyack and Rockland. The next Hop will be scheduled for September or October.

You can learn more about Lemmonade by visiting them at 5 South Broadway (Wednesday-Friday 12pm-6pm / Saturday 11am-6pm / Sunday 12-5pm). Follow along on Instagram () for upcoming promotions and events.

Glitter Thicket owner and Nyack native Larisa Schuckle is really living her truth. Before starting her business, she earned a degree in Animal Studies from Canisius University, worked at several farm sanctuaries, and was a humane educator – traveling to schools to teach students about the impact of food choices on individual health, animals, and the environment. Taken altogether, she was perfectly positioned to be the person to bring a vegan bakery to Nyack’s downtown.

“I wanted to offer people in the community affordable, healthy foods that have a lower environmental footprint and also help protect animals,” Larisa says. “Plant-based eating for me has been really delicious and joyful and I wanted to share that. I also wanted to create a space where local artists could share their work and be celebrated.”

In addition to a simple menu of vegan sandwiches, baked, goods and high tea, Larisa appeals to Nyack’s artistic vibe and strong sense of community by featuring an ever-changing collection of art from local makers, jewelry, gifts, and fairy houses. Customers are able to be surrounded by beauty while eating delicious food. In addition, the shop creates custom birthday and wedding cakes and hosts private fairy tea parties and other celebratory events upon request.

When asked “Why Nyack?” for her business, it is no surprise that creativity was at the forefront of Larisa’s reason.

“It is truly special how many different people from the community have been willing to showcase their work here, from jewelry, mustard, hat and perfume makers, to sculptors, authors, photographers, painters and potters,” Larisa states. “There are lots of creations to look at when you come in. There have also been many people who have been willing to share their skills and passions in the space and organize things like tarot nights, poetry clubs, discussion groups and open mic nights!”

Looking forward, Larisa hopes to continue hosting specialty events and being a gathering place for people to express themselves and celebrate. She tries to do a party for most nature-based holidays and select artistic events. She is hosting a closing reception for an artist on May 18th, a welcome party for a new artist on May 24th, and a Garden Tea Party at the First Reformed Church of Nyack on June 2nd. You can learn more about the aforementioned events and much more by following Glitter Thicket on social media - (Instagram), Glitter Thicket (Facebook), or visiting their website (https://www.glitterthicket.com/).

Saturday Spotlight: Christine Cordey Salon

As a third-generation stylist, Christine Cordey Salon owner Christine Locurto always knew that this industry was “in her blood.” She has been behind a chair since she was 17 years old and began her career in Warwick, NY – it was there that she learned that living and working in a small community was what she was meant to do.

After getting married, Christine was itching for a bit more. She wanted to be closer to the city, yet still work in a small-town salon, hence Nyack! Christine made the move to Nyack’s MB Salon & Spa where she learned the ins and outs of the large luxury salon landscape over the course of her 15 years there. When the owner decided to retire, she gave Christine her blessing to take over the business and in 2013, Christine Cordey Salon was born.

Located at 66 South Broadway, Christine Cordey Salon has been in business now for almost 11 years. Last year, Hudson Valley Magazine named the salon “Best of the Hudson Valley” for highlights.

“This industry is all I have ever known,” Christine says. “This boutique salon is a small, comfortable space for me to do my craft and enjoy my guests. Years later we never knew how special this little studio would become. We have trained and raised many young stylists in those walls.”

Most of Christine’s team are people she has trained and they are who Christine credits with making the salon what it is today – a “happy place” for guests coming from near and far that she hopes to make feel safe and heard (with amazing hair, of course). The salon even offers a $5,000 scholarship via the Rockland Community Foundation to students currently enrolled in one of the area’s cosmetology programs. Christine Cordey also gives back to the community in other ways with food drives, events for nonprofits, and their famous 12 Acts of Kindness during the holiday season.

Looking forward, there is no doubt that Christine plans on staying for many years to come.

“My ultimate goal is to leave a beautiful legacy and to continue our craft,” Christine says. “It’s truly effortless to come to work every day. A pure joy.”

Happy Friday, Visit Nyack Facebook Fam!

Just a friendly reminder that Nyack Feasts 2024 is happening NOW through Sunday, April 21st!

As mentioned in prior posts, Nyack diners can choose from 30 restaurants and 24 merchants and service providers offering a variety of options including special menus at special prices, discounts of up to 20% on indoor dining, and free items to accompany orders.

Merchants will offer similar discounts and special sales for patrons of Nyack Feasts. Cuisines include French, Italian and specialty fresh pasta, Thai, Filipino, Ukrainian, Greek, Mexican, Vietnamese, Himalayan, Peruvian, American Southern, Continental, charcuterie and imported cheeses, specialty coffees and baked goods, casual pub eats (including Irish favorites), diner-style breakfasts and burgers, and artisanal beers and beverages, and brewery fare – all in the center of Nyack.

"Variety is the spice of Nyack," said event organizer Mark Davidoff, director of Rockland Community College Hospitality & Culinary Arts Center. "Nyack is not a one-size-fits-all community," Our community is all about creativity, multi-cultural cuisines and a wide variety of merchants providing extraordinary products and services. By allowing something other than the standard prix fixe menu for a restaurant week, each participating establishment crafts its own offer enabling us to celebrate the diversity of Nyack’s restaurants, storefronts and its population. That's what Nyack is all about."

“Our restaurants attract diners of all persuasions and appetites from around the tri-state area and beyond," added Roger Cohen, President of the Nyack Chamber of Commerce. "Restaurants are core businesses in our community, and play a critical role in driving our local economy. Having the merchants participate and play a critical role in growing FEASTS amplifies the opportunity this promotion provides to guests of the Village and all of our businesses.”

Saturday Spotlight: Hippie Dippie Threads

During the strange, dark time that was the pandemic, Hippie Dippie Threads owner Brittany Verrino found her light in the creative process.

A former educator for close to a decade, Brittany taught science and wellness courses at a Special Education school. When Covid struck and everyone was mandated to be home, Brittany began to dream about her next career move.

“I spent my time crafting, being outside, and doing some kind of movement,” Brittany recounts. “I felt so happy and I wanted to start a business that would give me the freedom to be creative, share my love for comfort and style, and live a lifestyle with good intention.”

Hippie Dippie Threads is your one stop shop for elevated comfort inspired by 70s fashion with a modern-day twist. The store offers styles that can easily transition day into night. HDT aims to meet the demands of the customer’s busy life while keeping them looking cute and in true Covid-rooted fashion, comfortable, around the clock.

“We have a large age range of women who enjoy our threads and wear them to work, while they travel, for movement and as loungewear,” Brittany says. “Our target shoppers value comfort above all else.”

Although Hippie Dippie Threads began as an online store, Brittany got a lot of face time with her future customers by attending Nyack’s street fairs. Acting as a vendor allowed her to organically grow and interact with future customers and as a Nyack native, the village was the natural choice for her first brick-and-mortar shop.

“I have always loved Nyack it’s just great vibes. I’m excited for my business to be a part of this community and I can’t wait to connect with other businesses and people who live near and far.”

Looking forward, Brittany hopes that Hippie Dippie Threads is just the first step towards building a lifestyle brand that promotes spending time in nature, expanding the mind through travel and building a deeper connection between the mind and body through movement.

You can visit HDT at 68 South Broadway Wednesday through Saturday from 12pm-5pm and Sundays from 12pm-4pm. To learn more about the store, promotions, and events, you can follow the shop's Instagram (), page (Hippie Dippie Threads), or visit their website (https://hippiedippiethreads.com/).

Saturday Spotlight: My Father’s House Southern Cuisine

For My Father's House Southern Cuisine owner Adrienne Cromartie Wolf, her restaurant is so much more than just that – it symbolizes a dream come true for both herself and her late father, Franklin Cromartie. Growing up, Adrienne worked alongside her dad in his catering business where he taught her everything that she knows. Unfortunately, Franklin succumbed to cancer before he could open his own business, but he passed the torch along to Adrienne to achieve their goal.

Adrienne has been an educator in the city for many years and prior to My Father’s House restaurant she had her own catering business which she started in 2005 – working church and other related events. After her father passed, her late mother, Cynthia, and nana, Lillie, encouraged her along her journey towards restaurant ownership and My Father’s House restaurant opened in 2021.

The restaurant offers classic southern soul food with a twist to a diverse group of patrons with soulfully vegetarian and vegan options influenced by Adrienne’s upbringing as a Seventh Day Adventist. Delicious food aside, Adrienne prides herself on creating a warm atmosphere for all customers.

“We work very hard to impart warmth and comfort reminiscent of family reunions growing up,” Adrienne says. “When you walk through our door, you are reunited with family members. We are dedicated to providing patrons with a memorable experience complete with delicious food, outstanding service, and even live Gospel and Jazz music on the weekends.”

So why Nyack? For Adrienne, the answer is obvious.

“Nyack has a rich history of African-American trailblazers and we thought this was an ideal community for us to carry on some of those traditions,” Adrienne stated. “We appreciated the diversity of the Nyack community and believed that it would enable us to offer a unique culinary experience and space that people from all different backgrounds can explore and enjoy.”

Looking forward, Adrienne plans to have MFHSC food trucks on the road. She is also looking forward to the annual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events set to include a special menu and themed live music.
