Today’s Wildlife Tip: A fawn left alone by itself with no adult deer in sight does not automatically need to be rescued!

The Doe will leave her fawn alone almost all day, except for a couple hours at dawn and dusk to let them nurse. While the Doe is away foraging, her fawn is well camouflaged, will lay down while waiting, and have almost no scent that the predators can detect.

Some signs to determine if a fawn needs help are if it is is constantly calling out/vocalizing for over an hour, is covered with ticks or fly eggs, is limping, or is laying next to an injured or deceased parent...in which case you should call a Permitted Wildlife Rehabilitator for advice BEFORE removing the fawn from where you found it. Otherwise, the fawn is probably doing fine. Curled ears is NOT a sign of distress so do not rescue a fawn just because its ears are curled. If you care, leave them there!

Thank you for caring about wildlife!

News from Yellowstone National Park

⚠️8/2 FLOOD UPDATE⚠️

Change to access from the Northeast Entrance into Yellowstone

Major construction repairs will begin substantially on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Contractors will be working on all damaged sections of the park’s Northeast Entrance Road near Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana. This requires alterations to the closures on the road.

The road had previously been open to bicyclists and pedestrian traffic to Barronette Meadow. Due to significant work beginning on the road this week, the road will be closed near the Warm Creek Trailhead and picnic area. This will still afford access to visitors and residents but will provide room for construction work to begin, including staging of equipment and materials needed to make repairs. It is estimated that repairs will be completed by Oct. 15, facilitating traffic between the park and Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana.

👉New changes to foot and bicycle access on Northeast Entrance Road

Northeast Entrance Road (via Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana):
▪Visitors can now travel 2 miles to Warm Creek Trailhead on bicycle (on paved roadways) and by foot for fishing and hiking in areas not identified as closed.
▪Previously, recreators could travel 6 miles into the park through the Northeast Entrance. To promote safe access within the active construction zone, the park is moving the barrier closer to the entrance to reduce potential conflicts between construction equipment and those on foot/bicycle.

👉Safety Precautions
▪Stay alert: Individuals using the roadway by foot or bicycle should be extremely cautious and expect heavy equipment on the roadways. Roadway shoulders are narrow and several curves along the roadway limit visibility. The park will also advise Oftedal Construction Inc. to be aware of bicyclists and pedestrians as they continue mobilizing.

MORE GOOD NEWS! NORTH LOOP TO BE REOPENED WITHIN TWO WEEKS!
This is a photo we snapped of Mammoth Hot Springs, which is one of the top attractions along the North Loop of Yellowstone Park. According to Jackson Hole News & Guide, the NPS Director Charles "Chuck" Sams III announced Sunday that in the next two weeks, the NPS will be opening the North Loop. Because the entrance roads leading into the North Loop from the North Entrance at Gardiner, and the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, will not be open this summer due to severe flood damage, the North Loop will only be accessible from the south. The South Loop is opening on June 22. This means visitors coming to Yellowstone Park this summer will be able to see MOST of what Yellowstone Park has to offer because the world famous "Grand Loop" (North and South Loops) will be open! We are absolutely thrilled for all of you who are coming to Yellowstone this summer! This is incredibly exciting news everyone!

YELLOWSTONE FLOOD UPDATE: GREAT NEWS FOR VISITORS!
The National Park Service is working extremely hard to open the South Loop for visitation... POSSIBLY by June 21st. (There has been no official announcement yet, but this was mentioned during an NPS live conference call yesterday). The NPS is going to announce some variation of a temporary "reservation system" in the coming days to help reduce the summer traffic situation along the South Loop.
BOTTOM LINE: The South Loop will indeed be open very soon for the summer season, which is where MANY of the top attractions of Yellowstone Park are located, such as the Old Faithful Area, ALL of the geyser basins, Madison Canyon, Madison Campground, Firehole River Drive, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (both rims), Canyon Village & campground, West Thumb Area, Grant Village, Lewis Lake, Yellowstone Lake Area, Fishing Bridge, Hayden Valley, Mud Volcano Area and more. All of these iconic attractions are located along the world-famous South Loop. Access to the South Loop will include the West Entrance (West Yellowstone), the East Entrance (Cody) and the South Entrance (north of GTNP). This basically means that visitors coming to Yellowstone Park this summer are going to have a wonderful time!
