Soemtimes things come together out of nowhere, fortunate accidents. For several years now there has consistently been only one DJ I have wanted to book for a Dope Jams party, that is Seba. I first was exposed to his music back when I was a teenager through his releases on Good Looking, then several years ago I started listening to his more recent releases and was instantly inspired by music again.

Time Out NY called him “a purveyor of lo-fi mayhem.” He has choreographed plays, fashion shows, operas, music videos, films, flash mobs and more, got kicked out of high school for a year, used to be a go-go dancer, and once choreographed the Queen of Thailand’s Birthday Party. When you talk to anyone about Funmi Ononaiye, two things come up without fail, his laugh and the fact that he was EVERYWHERE all the time! Shawn Dub possesses those two same qualities! His infectious laugh can be heard at any record store, whether it be the one he has being the backbone at for almost ten years, Human Head, or any other shop in NYC he is constantly shootin’ the s**t at. His warm humble presence translates line for line when he is behind the decks. Raised in the emerging hip hop scene of Long Beach, CA in the nineties his taste is second to none, he has a true appreciation for all kinds of music and of the school of thought that there are only two kinds of music, good and bad. There are very few people in the world who can move you to tears every time they do their “thing”. Master of their craft but not so masterful that they allow the life force to leave their art as it becomes too polished. Everytime James Hurt sits down at a piano tears flood my eyes, usually within the first three notes. I can’t articulate why. Is he technically a master? Without a question. Is he funkier than a mosquitos tweeter? He is the funkiest. But beyond those things he is the truth, unfiltered and unconcerned with the blowback, and I think that is really why the tears flow for me. Funmi was the same.
