Dope Jams New Years Day Ball

Those who took an interest in my journey know that my days at Dance Tracks Records—where I was the head curator and co-owner until my departure in 1998 to focus solely on Spiritual Life Music - remain my absolute favorite place to spin music. Actually, it was there that I first came out publicly-not as a DJ, but as a passionate, carefree music-selecting storyteller. The amalgamation of those heydays of artistic freedom allowed fresh ideas to flourish, thus contributing to the production of a plethora of dope music. Being at the helm of this game-changing music emporium gave me 100% freedom to be myself.

Fast forward to February 1, 2005, a time when two young, longtime friends began their quest to fill a void in what was sadly missed as far as record stores in New York City. Setting their sights on Brooklyn, they soon gave birth to Dope Jams-an institution that took to heart embracing my input and experience as the elder statesman. Outside of my monthly Sacred Rhythm events at Club Love, Dope Jams would be the place where I could once again be free, and where actually, nothing less would be permitted.

And so, here we are now, reunited, brought together by the same cause and an unyielding resistance to the status quo, starting the New Year with some dopeness in celebration of 20 years of Dope Jams at Cosmic Arts.

2025 marks the 20 Year Anniversary of Dope Jams. Beyond all the amazing music sold and records pressed the life blood of the shop has always been the parties. Specifically the in-store ones, something magic happens in a space not setup to maximize bar sales and without the stress of time limitations beholden to a bottom line. What could be viewed as a hindrance becomes a key in its definition, something like the lack of air conditioning. The chaotic sweat box allowing those fever pitch musical moments to blast you off into the stratosphere. The embracing of these fortunate accidents is what the shop is founded on. There is nothing unique about these situations, what is unique is seeing the positive and how to use it to your advantage in what otherwise would be a negative. Building the shop there was many times these circumstances arose and I would express my frustrations to my friend Joe Claussell and he would help me see how to refocus that energy. These conversations were immensely important to me not throwing in the towel and moving forward.

When the shop was finally built out and we did the first in-store events there was only one person to have play, Joe Claussell. This early series of parties helped define the course of the shop. So it is with great excitement that we start 2025, the 20th Anniversary Year of Dope Jams, on January 1st from 3PM-10PM with an in-store party at Joe’s shop in Brooklyn, Cosmic Arts. Please join us.

The vibratory states of sounds and silences created a catalogue of resonances with which an array of creation could emerge. The fundamental aspect of vibration presented a cymatic reality. There are very few people in the world who can move you to tears every time they do their “thing”. Master of their craft but not so masterful that they allow the life force to leave their art as it becomes too polished. Everytime James Hurt sits down at a piano tears flood my eyes, usually within the first three notes. I can’t articulate why. Is he technically a master? Without a question. Is he funkier than a mosquitos tweeter? He is the funkiest. But beyond those things he is the truth, unfiltered and unconcerned with the blowback, and I think that is really why the tears flow for me. Funmi was the same.
