I so clearly remember 25 years ago at the tender age of 19 discovering the music of Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders and having my mind blown, reprogrammed! But also feeling so frustrated, like it was something that only was of that time period, as with Disco, Rock and even Hip Hop I had missed the magic by just a few years. The contemporary Jazz of the late nineties was polished, soulless and far from interesting or invigorating….then I moved to New York to work at Spiritual Life Music. In the same building as the labels office was Walker Stage. Every Thursday night was ‘Speak In Tones’, an informal jazz jam session commandeered over by master percussionist Daniel Moreno. I had finally found what I sought! It was the funkiest, freest expression of music I had ever heard. All the greatest jazz musicians in NYC at the time floated through there, not amateurs getting their chops, these were the baddest muthaf**kas on the planet pushing and pulling each other into another stratosphere. They may have been recording watered down straight ahead jazz albums for labels like Blue Note during the day but when they showed up at Walker Stage they played what they really felt, and in turn you felt it. Amongst these madmen there was a crazed pianist who stuck out among the rest, and trust me that is saying a lot. His name is James Hurt.

To those that have been in the Dope Jams vibemosphere in the past 20 years you most likely know James, he has often performed interplanetary electronic music at the shop under his alias DG9. But what you most likely haven’t heard is James behind the piano at the helm of the cities finest Jazz musicians. After reminiscing with my good friend Joe Claussell about the magic at Walker Stage and the immensity of James’ talent, we decided it was time to act. Within the confines of Joe’s event space we present ‘Ancestral Technology’ : a regular jam session of NYC’s finest jazz musicians led by the singular James Hurt. The opening ceremony will be Wednesday April 2nd from 7PM-10PM, join us as we bear witness to the chemical reaction known as James Hurt.

Dope Jams New Years Day Ball

Those who took an interest in my journey know that my days at Dance Tracks Records—where I was the head curator and co-owner until my departure in 1998 to focus solely on Spiritual Life Music - remain my absolute favorite place to spin music. Actually, it was there that I first came out publicly-not as a DJ, but as a passionate, carefree music-selecting storyteller. The amalgamation of those heydays of artistic freedom allowed fresh ideas to flourish, thus contributing to the production of a plethora of dope music. Being at the helm of this game-changing music emporium gave me 100% freedom to be myself.

Fast forward to February 1, 2005, a time when two young, longtime friends began their quest to fill a void in what was sadly missed as far as record stores in New York City. Setting their sights on Brooklyn, they soon gave birth to Dope Jams-an institution that took to heart embracing my input and experience as the elder statesman. Outside of my monthly Sacred Rhythm events at Club Love, Dope Jams would be the place where I could once again be free, and where actually, nothing less would be permitted.

And so, here we are now, reunited, brought together by the same cause and an unyielding resistance to the status quo, starting the New Year with some dopeness in celebration of 20 years of Dope Jams at Cosmic Arts.
