REMINDER: Beach Bonfire Season Begins on WEDNESDAY (11/16)

Permits will NOT be accepted before Monday, November 14 at www.OakIslandNC.gov/BONFIRE

5 IMPORTANT REMINDERS ABOUT THE PERMIT PROCESS:

1. There is NO charge for a permit, as the main purpose is to provide the Fire Department with a record of when and where to expect fires on the beach.

2. Even if someone else sets up your bonfire, YOU must fill out and submit the application yourself. Others cannot do this for you, even as part of a free or paid service.

3. Beach Bonfire Permits are NOT accepted more than 72 hours before a planned bonfire. This is to allow for accurate wind forecasts, where PEAK windspeeds must be forecasted at or below 15 MPH for the time of the bonfire.

4. Once submitted, you should receive an email copy of your permit, which will serve as your proof of submission. A digital (email) or printed copy of this should be kept at all times, as it may be requested on location at the bonfire.

5. Finally, remember to always practice fire safety, and to please clean up after your bonfire! All Emergency Response personnel have authority to extinguish any fire deemed unsafe, regardless of permit status.

Working together and being courteous of your neighbors by following these reminders, will allow us all to enjoy many safe and happy Beach Bonfire Seasons to come!

Beautiful Lemon shark caught and released on the west end this morning. FYI
Attention fishermen:
If a Shark is Pulled Backwards Can They Actually Drown?
Yes, if you pull a shark backward, the shark will “drown”. However, suffocate would be a more appropriate word than drown.

A shark would stop breathing once you start pulling it backward. They do not have the capacity to process water flowing through their lungs in a negative direction.

Therefore, pulling a shark backward would quickly exhaust it as it can no longer get oxygen. The shark eventually suffocates and dies.
Sharks are different from other fish because they can’t hold on while being pulled backward. But some other fish can process water in a reverse direction to extract oxygen through their gills. So, fish like this would require extra effort to suffocate by pulling backward.

If the shark is in good condition return it to the water gently, head first.

If your released shark appears to be swimming erratically, lies motionless on the bottom or swims back to shore, some revival assistance may be required. Hold the shark upright in the water facing into the current. Continue to hold the shark until it swims away strongly.

REMEMBER: HEALTHY SHARKS MEAN HEALTHY OCEANS!
