Animal rescue is incredibly difficult—far more than most people realize. Unless you've lived it, it's hard to truly understand the weight it carries.

As foster families, we open our homes and our hearts to dogs we often know nothing about. We rarely have their full history, we don’t always know their triggers—but we take them in anyway. We do it to give them a chance. We do it knowing there are risks—to our own pets, our children, and our homes. We do it because, if we don’t… who will?

We do it with hope. With love. With the belief that maybe, just maybe, we can help them reach the life they deserve.

Sometimes, that hope is rewarded with a happy ending. But sometimes… there isn’t one.

I’m not able—or ready—to say more right now. But I will say this: it’s devastating when our best isn’t enough. When we were meant to be the bridge to a better life, and despite everything, we couldn’t get them there.

It hurts in a way that’s hard to put into words.

Update:

Thank you so much for those who pledged to save Rowan! The rescue I had talked to wasn’t able to get a foster in Charlotte but a rescue the shelter works with was able to find a foster and will be showing up tomorrow morning at Kershaw County Humane Society to get him!!!!

Your pledge made it possible for the rescue to step up so please honor it because the rescue will need it! This is not a rescue I know personally but one that has been vetted by shelter and pulled from them before.

I went to a new shelter today… and I met Rowan.

He didn’t even lift his head when I approached. He was curled up tightly, trying to soothe himself — completely shut down, in visible pain and overwhelming distress.

Rowan is suffering. His eyes say it all: he’s had a rough, likely heartbreaking life. And now, he’s laying in an overcrowded shelter with a severe case of Demodex mange (non-contagious), his body raw and broken, his spirit hanging by a thread.

Despite it all, he is gentle. Loving. Desperately in need of kindness.
He’s been nothing but sweet, showing no signs of aggression, even while in agony.

But Rowan can’t wait. The shelter is full. He needs OUT to rest, recover, and finally feel safe.

A rescue in Charlotte is willing to help — but only if:
1. A local Charlotte-area foster steps up
2. Pledges are raised to cover his care

Why I Do It

Why do I use my business page—meant for vacation rentals—to post about dogs in need? Because I can’t separate the two. My vacation homes exist in memory of the dogs who never got their second chance. While my own dogs sleep safely in warm beds, thousands sit on death row in shelters, waiting—hoping—for a miracle that may never come.

I think of Red, a dog from a rural shelter in Chester, South Carolina. When we adopted him, he could barely walk a block. But we didn’t give up. We spent months searching for answers, traveling hours to a specialist for surgery. And because of that, Red got to live over a decade as a cherished family member—loved, safe, and free to create beautiful memories. All because we chose to adopt him.

Not every dog is as lucky. And that’s why I do this. For every happy ending, there are countless others who never get the chance. I try. And I cry. Every time my best efforts fall short, every time I lose one despite everything I’ve done. Their faces never leave me—not the ones I saved, not the ones I lost. Even those I met briefly, years ago, still haunt me.

But still, I try. Because they deserve a chance. Because they deserve love. Because if I have the power to make a difference, how could I ever look away?

Moral: Compassion is not an option—it’s a responsibility. If we have the ability to help, we must. Because to the one we save, our choice means everything.

When asked what they wanted to do today, the girls didn’t hesitate—'Can we go to the shelter?' they asked. I said yes, thinking we could take a dog on a short daycation, give one a break from the shelter. But when we arrived, my youngest broke down in tears over one dog, while the other grew upset over another. Instead of a day out, we spent hours at the shelter, with the girls quietly sitting outside the kennels of the dogs that had stolen their hearts.

It is devastating to teach children compassion, only to watch their hearts shatter when they realize they can’t save them all. No matter how much we rescue, foster, or advocate, the truth remains—our home is already full of dogs we’ve saved, and yet, there are always THOUSANDS more waiting for help.

Still, we show up.

We show up knowing it will hurt, knowing it will cost tears and heartbreak.

We show up because these dogs deserve to be seen, to be loved, to have hope.

But I wish our community would step in too—so my children could see that their kindness and pain weren’t in vain, that their love made a difference as we alone can not save them all. We do what we can, often more, but it is not enough so we need the COMMUNITY to step up to help!

These beautiful souls are waiting at Charlotte Animal Care & Control (Charlotte, NC). A shelter that like other shelters we help that are euthanizing AMAZING dogs, like these two, for SPACE because no matter how much the beg and ask for help there has not been enough help to save them. One of the shelters we have helped for years has lost so many dogs this past week and now even losing employees that can not deal with the losses.

Please, if you can foster, adopt, or support in any way—help them and help us as we the ones trying to help can't keep doing this when so many of our attempts end up making no difference. They deserve better than just being the ones we cry for. HERE IS THEIR LINK:

My properties have always been consistently booked, but something has changed after Helene. For the first time, my cabins are sitting completely open with no reservations. I’m unsure whether this is due to a shift in tourism trends or ranking changes, but it’s a significant shift.

I own two beautiful cabins—one in Boone and another in the Smokies—and they’ve always had high demand. However, since Helene, Boone, in particular, has seen a sharp drop in bookings.

🐶 OPINION: Let’s Make a Difference for Dogs in Need! 🐶

Every shelter and rescue I know is struggling—there’s no question about that. I’ve spent over a decade working to help animals in the U.S. and will continue to do so. But today, I want to share something close to my heart.

As a Brazilian-American, I feel deeply connected to both of my countries. While visiting Brazil, my cousin (the only other crazy dog person in my family!) introduced me to an incredible rescue that desperately needs help. They only save pit bulls—if you think pits face a stigma in the U.S., what I saw in Brazil was heartbreaking. These dogs endure horrific situations, and there are very few resources or rescues to help them.

After seeing their struggle firsthand, I can’t ignore it—so I want to help. And I’d love your input! Here’s what I’m thinking:

💰 Donation Matching: For every $10 donated, I will personally match it. Given how strong the dollar is, even small donations make a huge impact!

📅 Rescue Calendar: They sell a beautiful calendar featuring the dogs they’ve saved! It’s about $15 plus shipping—would you be interested in buying one?

Brownie (affectionately called Willie by his foster mom) is in desperate need of a temporary foster for just 5 days—or he risks being sent to a shelter that is euthanizing for space.

This sweet, shy, and submissive lovebug melts into your lap and just wants to be loved. Outside on walks, his personality shines, and he becomes more playful, but he also adores his crate—zero accidents, crate-trained, and easy-going!

He’s great with both dogs and cats and just wants your love and attention when you’re home. Yes, he can be a little needy—but in the best way!

This is urgent. If you can give Willie just a few days of safety, you’re quite literally saving his life. Please reach out ASAP! 🤍

URGENT: PLEASE HELP SAVE THESE DESERVING DOGS

I need your help. I was going to step back from sharing stories of dogs in need because the negative comments had become overwhelming.

But today, my heart is heavy—I recently lost the chance to help some incredible dogs I photographed with the promise of giving them a brighter future as they are no longer with us. Their stories, and the desperate pleas from the shelter, have brought me to tears. They were good dogs in a phenomenal shelter but the amount of dogs coming in with a small fraction leaving creates a situation that they can’t overcome 😞

These beautiful bonded pairs are still waiting for a chance at a better life, and I can’t stand by while more lives are lost. The shelter has been pleading for support that just isn’t coming in enough, and I refuse to let cynicism silence our shared compassion. This shelter has posted them so many times!

What a heartbreaking journey…

Riley arrived at Charlotte Animal Care & Control as a puppy in 2015, full of hope for a loving forever home. He was adopted with the promise of a happily ever after—but that promise was broken. Now, in 2024, Riley is back at the very same shelter where he started his life. And this time, he’s been waiting for months.

The shelter is overwhelmed, like so many others across the country. Dogs like Riley—seniors and long-term residents—are at the highest risk of never making it out unless there is community help. His time is running out, and he has no idea why he was abandoned once again.
