Oak Island Accommodations Presents: The Night After Christmas
(A Cautionary Holiday Tale)

‘Twas the night after Christmas, and all through the room,
The kids played with presents while the adults pulled up Zoom;
They looped in the family who were still far away,
And began the hunt for a beach house for their summer vacay!

They poured over listings, they weighed cons and pros,
Til they found one with *all* the bells, whistles, and bows;
They saved it to favorites and bookmarked the site,
And agreed that first they’d sleep on it, just for the night.

When the next day began our group was quite slow to start,
It was mid-afternoon when they pulled up their cart;
They looked in confusion, in shock and surprise-
For their house seemed to vanish right before their eyes.

They refreshed the browser, went forward, went back;
They called cousin Billy, the one who could hack.
But someone else had booked it, he found with a click,
And no one could change that, not even Saint Nick.

Pa hung his head sadly- “We should have clicked book”;
But Ma’s eyes they twinkled as she shouted “Look!”
“Here’s another just like it, with one extra bed;
Vacation is saved- just book this one instead!”

Pa sprang into action as quick as a mouse,
He opened that listing and booked up that house.
But I heard him say softly as he shut down the site,
“Next year dear, yes! We’ll book before Christmas night!”

Thankful, Grateful and Famous: Into The Mystic Received a Stylish Renovation During HGTV's Battle on the Beach Season Four

In August of 2023, a select group of OIA homeowners received an e-mail. Producers from an HGTV-based renovation show had reached out to the OIA marketing department, and we were passing on their ask. Were the homeowners interested in participating in the show to receive an extensive property renovation? Even with the significant catch of needing to hand over the proverbial keys and agreeing to have almost no input on the renovations, many of our qualifying owners jumped at the chance.

For months, OIA's marketing department helped coordinate between owners and producers as location scouting and property previewing ensued. But when the cameras began rolling in January of 2024, Into The Mystic was one of three homes selected for season four of the program. Viewers watched as mentor Alison Victoria guided her team through six intense weeks of renovations, achieving one of the most extreme changes in the history of the show when they completely swapped the locations of the kitchen and living room in this classic beach cottage.
After cast and crew departed, the homeowners spent several weeks tailoring the refreshed property to best suit both their needs and the needs of future renters. While the master bedroom remains much as the judges last saw it, beds in the other two sleeping chambers needed some adjusting. Rather than two queen beds in the second bedroom, you'll now find an additional king, and the third bedroom is now friendly for both kids and adults with two queen beds provided instead of bunks. In the living area, the dining table was replaced with a narrower, longer version, allowing for both more seating and more floor space.

Overall, much of the property remains as shown on the HGTV program.The spa-like bathrooms kept the gorgeous tile and the hidden movie room is still in place to provide a cool and quiet refuge after a day spent in the sun. Show-stopping features like the gleaming wood kitchen island anchors the open concept living space and the hand-built dining bench still accents the home's dining area.

Thankful, Grateful and Lucky? After an Unexpected Lightning Strike, One Family Receives a Shocking Offer!

A few days after the Pipkin family settled in for their annual Caswell Beach summer vacation at the beachfront home Jonah's Whale, storm clouds gathered on the horizon as what looked like a typical summer thundershower began to form. Their experience was anything but usual, however, as moments later a large boom shook the floors underneath their feet and the smell of smoke spread through the air. The beach house had been struck by lightning!

The family boiled out of the home like turtles from a nest to survey the damage, noting where lightning had clearly struck the roof of the building. Phone calls to local authorities and the Oak Island Accommodations' office ensued, and help was on hand in moments. Margaret Pipkin, matriarch of the family, said the funniest part of the aftermath was the 25 - 30 firefighters from around five different engines traipsing through the house to make sure it was clear of any fire. "They just kept coming and coming!"

OIA's maintenance crew arrived promptly as well, providing immediate fixes for some of the damages and blown out lighting, but that wasn't the only attention the family would receive! A short time later, Margaret's son informed her that a news van had pulled up, and the grandkids were only too happy to give on-camera interviews about the event to local station WECT. Eventually, the excitement died down, and the trip got back to normal. The Pipkins were wonderful about allowing workers to access the home for further repairs during their stay. Remarking on the situation, Margaret states "When we're on vacation, we're on vacation! We don't stress about stuff like that."

A few weeks after the family returned home from their trip, Margaret received a surprising voicemail. The message said that the homeowner of Jonah's Whale would like to offer the family another 2024 vacation week free of charge since their first stay was a bit more exciting than planned. At first, Margaret thought this must be a joke. "We didn't expect any kind of compensation or anything - We had a wonderful week, and we love that house!"

Even though she had her doubts, she called through to the OIA office and was surprised to discover that this incredible offer was real. All repairs were fully completed, and the homeowner wanted them to come back and enjoy an additional week at Jonah's Whale. After a bit of discussion, Margaret called back. Could they come for Thanksgiving? It would mark the first time they've ever visited as a family in the off-season. Owners Austin and Conny McCormack were quick to answer. “We are happy to offer Thanksgiving week to the Pipkins, who love Jonah’s Whale as their home for a week every summer.”

With the dates confirmed, Margaret started planning their beach holiday in earnest. The grandkids are very excited, and Margaret is pretty thrilled too. "This is just incredibly generous. We really appreciate it."

Overnight, the projected path of Tropical Storm Debby has shifted and new predictions indicate we may receive somewhat less rain than originally forecast. While flooding is still a concern leading up to and after the storm, the Storm Surge Watch is no longer in effect. The Town of Oak Island reports that due to the shift in the storm, the piedmont and western regions of the state including Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and surrounding areas will be significantly impacted.
