I’m certain there was some drama that led to this tiny car being placed above the elevator exit door! I’m guessing it was some child’s favorite car all week, and as they said goodbye to Oak Island, they didn’t want to say goodbye to the car.

The water is very calm, the tide is very low and the beach is not yet crowded this morning. It is Friday, so I expect things will look different by this afternoon! We will be turning our home and our favorite place over to our summer guests starting next week. See you again in the fall, Oak Island!

First turtle nest of 2024 in NC is on Oak Island this year. Thanks to our great turtle protection program for keeping it safe. Expect some hatchlings by early July!

Did we tell you we renovated The Guest Quarters in 2023? New floors throughout (no more carpet in the bedrooms), new kitchen cabinets, lighting, counters, stove and sink, and the Middle bathroom got a complete makeover with a tiled shower! We also added a couple of windows and moved a door, adding more room to the living room and more light to the dining area. Two of our favorite organizations on Oak Island, our neighbor Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter and Oak Island Water Rescue, collaborate to care for our wildlife. Thanks to the good people who step up to help when needed.

We love our avian neighbors at Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter. The Oak Island community has really stepped up to give these folks the support they need to do their important work. Take a peek over the fence as you walk to the beach, but don't make eye contact with the owls.

Exciting day on the island! It's rare for a sea turtle to lay her eggs during the day and these lucky people were able to watch the show.

I'm reminded of a call I received from a guest late at night about 10 years ago. When the phone rings after you are in bed, a host always thinks the worst. "Do I need to call a plumber? HVAC technician? Buy a new refrigerator?"

This time, the question was "who do I call to report a nesting sea turtle?" He and his son had taken a walk before bed. They came across a mother turtle making her way toward the dunes. They stood back respectfully on the beach, watched her crawl and dig, lay her eggs and return to the ocean. He said there was no one else on the beach, and the experience was magical.

The next day, the tide had washed away her tracks, and the morning turtle patrol did not know to mark the nest. Our guests were persistent about following up to protect the eggs. With the help of this man and his son, the Sea Turtle Protection Program was able to identify the nest and relocate it above the high tide line.

Two months later, I was at the beach when the nest boiled, and I sent them pictures of the baby turtle tracks following their mother back into the ocean.

We love our little island paradise and love when our guests are able to share the experience!

We have two houses in one. Each part has its own entrance, kitchen, laundry room, and a covered porch. There are bikes, swings and beach toys for everyone. Welcome to Oak Island!

Rent the whole house or one of the smaller units. The two parts are separated by a locked, interior door, which we can open for you.

The Owners' Retreat has an elevator and a large bathroom with accessibility features to make it inviting for more guests. (Details and photos in the listing.)

The Oak Island Splashpad will open for the 2023 Summer Season on Friday, May 26; however the Splashpad will close if at any point thunder or lighting is observed.
