We had a few obstacles but overall, we had a great season! 2023 was our third-highest number of nests on record! We have had record-breaking years two years in a row! This season we were #1 on the leaderboard on seaturtle.org, and we were third in NC for the number of nests per beach...Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout beat us! We are so very blessed to be able to help protect and care for the sea turtles that visit our beautiful island! Thank you to those of you who care and continue supporting our efforts! You are Appreciated!

Rather than putting oysters on ice, a local group wants to use broken hockey sticks to build oyster habitat by hanging stick-made reefs from docks.

I've climbed the OKI lighthouse several times!

It's National Lighthouse Day! We're pretty partial to our local beacon, the Oak Island Lighthouse, just past our front gate and also visible from our beach access.

The Oak Island Lighthouse, the last lighthouse to be built in NC, was completed in 1958. During construction of the tower, a temporary concrete mixing plant was set up at the site and operated continuously for six days. The concrete was poured into a movable form that was slowly raised by jacks at the rate of one foot per hour. The three bands of color that give the tower its distinctive daymark also speak of modern innovation and durability. For the first forty feet of the tower, workers poured natural gray cement. In forming the next fifty feet they used a mixture of white Portland cement and white quartz aggregate, and for the final fifty feet they mixed black coloring with the cement. The result is a monolithic tower with three bands that never need repainting! There is no spiral staircase as found in most older lighthouses, but instead a series of ships ladders with a total of 131 steps to the gallery level.
The characteristic flashing pattern for the light is four one-second flashes every 10 seconds and was updated in 2020 by the Coast Guard to rotating LED lights - the first lighthouse in the US to use these new, brighter lights!

Stop by this local beauty on your next visit!

I so remember the Frying Pan Lightship moored at the foot of Howe Street in the 1970's. Very cool photo of both beacons together!

In 1964, the Frying Pan Tower replaced the lightship, Frying Pan. Prior to this, lightships had been utilized since the 19th century to mark the end of Frying Pan Shoals.

A big thanks to our friends at The State Port Pilot and The NC Maritime Museum at Southport for sharing this fascinating piece of history!

Island Daze

About Us: My husband and I bought our home in 1999 and gradually renovated/upgraded it, mostly by ourselves and the help of friends (thanks Timblin, Geoff and Matthew!). Our home has been the nucleus of countless extended family gatherings over the years and we are so happy it has created long lasting memories for all our nieces and nephews. We hope you too will enjoy the uniqueness of Oak Island while staying at 'Island Daze'.

Why Oak Island NC?: In the early '70's my parents choose Long Beach (now Oak Island) for our annual 2 week family beach vacation every August, and I've chosen to vacation here ever since! After considering many coastal towns in NC, my husband and I settled on Oak Island because of the low density development, mix of year round residents, second home owners and tourists, the clean uncrowded beach, funky local art scene, great restaurants, proximity to Wilmington and the natural beauty of the island.

Unique Benefits: 10 miles of uncrowded beaches, family-oriented attractions make Oak Island just the beach you’re looking for. On Oak Island, the water is always the center of attention with more than 60 public beach-access points, 2 fishing piers, 2 marinas and 3 public boat and canoe ramps. The ocean breezes from the south facing beach, the ocean view, easy access to the beach, a grove of live oaks in our back yard which give way to the tidal creek and marsh beyond, and countless reasons to be outside enjoying the beauty of this barrier island and its wildlife are just a few reason I love being at OKI and our house.
