Picked up litter on the beach today. I suppose it’s worth remembering! Not the post I was looking for but it has the same message!

Good morning Oak Island!

We are glad to report that we do not have an elevated rip current risk today. Notice we did not say “no risk”. If you have breaking waves, you’ll always have outflowing currents.

In the spirit of the green flag we are flying today, here’s a green clam to remind you to to not be shellfish and help keep our beautiful beaches clean.

We don’t normally post about beach cleanliness, but this was too cute not to. Thanks Volusia County, FL for the art work. Side note- we only provide doggie p**p bags at the beach access points.

If you lived all the rest of your days in the Carolinas, you may never see the Milky Way and the Northern Lights at the same time again. Kristin Rahn captured this beauty at Ocean Isle Beach early this morning. Amazing!

PUBLIC NOTICE - WARNING

There have been reports of dead puffer fish that have washed up on Caswell Beach and were found this morning. If one is found, DO NOT TOUCH.

The spikes of a dead puffer fish can still be poisonous even after the fish has died. The pufferfish's skin is covered in spines and spikes, which are exceedingly hazardous. They carry a toxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX), which is deadly to other fish and humans. You should avoid touching a pufferfish, especially if it is "puffed out."

If eaten these fish are toxic and potentially fatal. The symptoms of poisoning are numbness of the mouth, salivation and vomiting, then weakness that can progress to respiratory failure. There is no antidote, so if you think your dog has eaten a puffer fish on the beach, visit the vet within 1 hour of ingestion.

If one is found, please call Town Hall at (910) 278-5471.

If you come into contact with one of these fish, call 911 immediately.
