With Christmas Eve only a week away it's time to get festive with some memories of Christmas markets we've loved.

One of Germany's biggest is in Nuremberg. It was our first stop on a Viking Christmas Market Cruise a few years ago.

When you think of Christmas Markets you may immediately think Germany, or Austria or many others. Would you think Portugal?
Yes, Portugal has many Christmas markets not just in the larger towns like Lisbon and Porto but even some of the very small towns have a lovely Christmas market and stunning light displays.

It's November 11th so that means it's Sao Martinho Day in Portugal.

The autumn is full of many celebrations throughout the world. When you’re in Portugal the smell of castanhas assadas or chestnuts roasting on an open fire means that the Magusto of São Martinho is underway. The festivities held on November 11th celebrate many things. The wine harvest season, the return of a small patch of warmer weather, and most importantly the story of São Martinho (Saint Martin).

5 years ago we were exploring Portugal as a possible place to live. It was a wonderful trip and we’re glad we took the plunge and moved.

I still get that same gelato combo down in Cascais at Santini.
