Blue whale seen recently 3 miles off the Carlsbad coast. 🐳☀️🐳☀️🐳

Blue whales are the largest animal to have ever existed and are found in oceans around the world, though they prefer the deep waters of the open ocean. They migrate long distances between their feeding grounds in polar regions and their breeding grounds in more temperate or tropical waters.

Did you know Blue whales are known for their deep, resonant calls, which can be heard over hundreds of miles underwater?! These calls are thought to play a role in communication and navigation.

These majestic creatures are a testament to the incredible diversity and grandeur of life in the ocean.

Report from Saturday’s Whale Watching trips 12 and 2:30 - Laura Lopez and a group of her naturalist friends met at Oceanside Adventures to Whale Watching on our new vessel Nala. She said “We left the harbor at noon watching and listening to barking California Sea Lions hauled out and within minutes we began seeing whale spouts! One, two, three and then four Blue Whales ahead. Soon there were two more Blue Whales, plus two Humpback Whales for a total of 8 Baleen Whales! Captain Shane kept the Nala idle for the majority of our trip. Serene seas made for great spotting conditions to see the bright white plume of these massive Blue Whales against the grey skies. At times, we were literally surrounded by whales in every direction we looked. Many of these Blue Whales would display their massive flukes lifting them high out of the water before diving as the onlooking passengers erupted in cheers each time. While these whales were sounding to feed on the abundant krill at least 200 feet below the surface, we waited with great anticipation for the next blow. We had several Blue Whales surface so close alongside us, off our bow and off our stern, passengers felt the mist of the powerful blow. A Humpback Whales was off our port side heading towards us before it dove and later a second was ahead off our right. A Blue Whale cow/calf pair crossed our bow before sounding. Being in the presence of so many Blue Whales is a rare opportunity and as we headed back to Oceanside Harbor aboard Nala, my friends and I talked and wondered if the other passengers realized this may be a once in a lifetime encounter! “ A report from Laura Lopez Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Visit Oceanside FOX 5 San Diego

- Humpback Whales: Famous for their acrobatics and complex songs, Humpback whales are a favorite among whale watchers due to their frequent breaching and tail-slapping behaviors.

Thursday, April 25th a fire broke out at the end of Oceanside Pier. Fortunately, no injuries were reported !

We are grateful to our first responders who have worked tirelessly to contain the fire to a small portion (less than 10%) at the far end of the pier.

We are saddened by the loss of the Brine Box fish stand and the old Ruby’s diner structure, which has been vacant since 2020, while optimistic that over 90% of the pier remains unaffected.

The rest of Oceanside remains open and safe to visit. Visitors can continue to enjoy our hotels, restaurants, shops, harbor, activities, and most beaches.

The pier is a beloved and historic Oceanside icon, and we are thankful for its continued presence in our community. The Oceanside experience remains intact.

For all pier updates, visit the City of Oceanside website: https://www.ci.oceanside.ca.us

We are so devastated to learn about the fire on our iconic pier / the pier has never had a fire in all the time it has been here, originally built in 1888, the pier has been destroyed twice in its lifetime, once in 1890 by rough seas and again in 1902. The current pier, which is 1,945 feet long and the longest on the West Coast, was built in 1987. Thank you to the Firefighters and everyone that helped the Mayor has said they will fix the pier as quickly as possible .

Ocean Adventures, Inc. launches 2nd Whale and Dolphin Excursion vessel in Oceanside, California on March 26, 2024, Oceanside, CA -

Passengers will be able to board NALA, the newly launched state-of-the-art catamaran owned and operated by Oceanside Adventures with an original designed hull by internationally renowned marine life artist Wyland. The new vessel was custom built by Copper Marine in Florida for Oceanside Adventures and will be the 2nd boat for the Oceanside Adventures company owned by the Hansen Family to operate from Oceanside Harbor. Oceanside Adventures first launched operations from Oceanside Harbor in July of 2015 with its unique 47 foot custom catamaran also built by Copper Marine in Florida.

This new vessel NALA is a 63 foot double deck custom Catamaran that can hold up to 118 passengers. The family owned operation is led by Captain Shane Hansen who has been overseeing the new build since 2020 and running the existing operation since 2015. Nala will also proudly display a custom-designed graphic wrap by Wyland. A long-standing collaborator with the Hansen family, Wyland’s image of a blue whale mom and baby on the hull can only be described as a marine masterpiece. It is the second image provided by Wyland, who in 2019 also provided a Humpback Whale mother and calf image currently displayed on the Oceanside Adventures vessel.

The vessel will be running the company's popular two hour trips that will explore the Southern California coastline on what will be a daily, year round operation. In addition NALA will be running private charters, something they have seen a huge increase and demand for with the addition of the new hotels and properties in Oceanside that have come on line in the last few years. President of Visit Oceanside Leslee Gaul said, “We are elated that Oceanside Adventures continues to invest in bringing top-notch visitor experiences to our city. This new vessel is a welcome addition to the harbor and signals continued optimism for Oceanside’s growing tourism industry.”

The warm waters in the region flourish with sea life including whales, dolphins, Harbor Seals and California Sea Lions all year long. Each year, thousands of whales migrate through the area providing a high frequency of sightings and numerous opportunities to experience the grand adventure of whale watching which has become so popular. The dockside location in Oceanside Harbor is minutes from the open sea, offering fast direct access to the viewing region. The new 63 foot, passenger vessel, Nala, has covered and open seating, a large galley area and a raised deck for optimal viewing, it should also be pointed out the entire vessel has clear isinglass around the deck making viewing whales and dolphins that much better, NALA has a very stable platform with unobstructed, 360 degree views , the upper deck will also allow a smaller number of people and has comfortable seating that will not block views , as an added bonus the NALA has GATORSTEP(R) flooring throughout both decks for extra comfort and support. The Hansen family, owners of Oceanside Adventures, led by Shane Hansen commented that “he is eager to introduce this new vessel to the Oceanside Community and the thousands of visitors that love our service already, we are sure it will be a big addition to the wonderful Oceanside community and it has been worth the wait.” Shane’s Father Mike Hansen and Aunt Donna Kalez also remarked how exciting it is to finally get this new vessel after launching in 2015, “It was always our intention to launch a larger vessel as we knew the demand was there. Thank you to the City of Oceanside who has been a wonderful partner to work with.”

All Oceanside Adventures Captains are American Cetacean Society Certified Naturalists, US Coast Guard licensed who provide expert and experienced commentary along the journey. Reservations can be made online at www.OceansideWhaleWatching.com.
