It was a perfect day for a trail race. 117 runners toed the line this morning. Much wildlife and scenery was viewed and no one got lost. Another Harriman Trail Race is in the books. We should do it again next year.

Spent last week at The Ranch At Rock Creek. They have the five peaks challenge for their guests. Most do it over a few days. I elected to do it in a few hours. Lots of fun. Views would have been better without the smoke but oh well. Love me a good adventure run.

August 17 is the Harriman Trail Run at Harriman State Park near Island Park, ID. Once again the race has filled and I could use some help. Sweeps, timing, cooking hamburgers and hotdogs, and general stuff. If you’re interested (and who wouldn’t be) let me know and I’ll put you on the list. I’ve often thought it would be fun to try growing my own wheat in the backyard. I bought 3lbs of wheat berries from Amazon and planted them last September. This month I harvested it. Cut the stalks, let them dry, hand threshed and winnowed. Built my own seed cleaner (which works great) and bagged it up. I ended up with 65 lbs of wheat, or just over a bushel, from 500 ft sq. I also bought a grain mill to make flour. Tonight I baked my first loaf of whole wheat bread using my wheat and honey from my bee hives. Warm Fresh bread with butter and honey? Doesn’t get much better than that. The process was a lot of fun and hard work in blazing sun. I learned a lot during the process. There are things I will do differently next year to speed the harvest process. You can grow your own wheat in your backyard. It was exciting to watch it grow, see the seed heads form and get huge, then turn brown signaling time to harvest. It has been hugely satisfying. Next year wheat and oats.

Ran a brand new race this morning. The Big Cottonwood Classic 15K. Lots of fun in the Wasatch around Brighton and Solitude. Got to hang with a couple of OG’s and . Highly recommend.

Marked the entire Logan Peak loop yesterday with my good friend Misty. Course is in much better shape than I expected. Not as much snow as I feared there would be and we’ll definitely have the aid station on the back of Mt. Logan. Runners will be going up the peak this year. So the usual course is in play. I could use a couple more volunteers at the start/finish. So if you’re interested let me know. Many thanks to my long time sponsor for providing all of the on course and post race hydration and fueling needs. We’ll see all of you runners next Saturday bright and early.

Did a bit of course recon and marking for Logan Peak. Still a crap ton of snow up high. Hopefully we’ll be able to have an aid station on the back of the peak this year.

We climbed out the first peak of the today by going up Malans. If you’re wondering what the peak challenge is, it’s climbing four of the iconic peaks here in Weber county. Malans, Mt. Ogden, Lewis, Ben Lomond. We’re adding a couple of bonus peaks this year, Willard peak and the peak of your choice, all by mid October. Wasatch Peaks Credit Union is our title sponsor this year. You can even sign up your dog. So get signed up and out on the trails. Your entry helps to support the Trails Foundation of Northern Utah and our mission to build, maintain, and advocate for trails here in norther Utah.

Kukui trail with Mr. and Mrs. Manning. Tough trail but the views were stunning and the Waimea river was gorgeous. Goats were seen but no T-Rex’s. 7.5 miles/3000’ gain.

Hey awesome runners,
The Logan Peak trail Run is on June 22 this year. This is a call for volunteers. I need at least two people for the Dry Canyon aid station, another sweep, a couple of people who can help with check in, a couple more for timing, and a couple to just hang out at the start/finish. I may need some help for the aid station on the back side of Logan Peak as well. If you can help out I would greatly appreciate it and you’ll get some sort of comp entry to one of my races for your efforts. Ran BoSho today. Saw all the usual suspects and OG’s. Weather was awesome, trails were in great shape. Didn’t do the entire distance but did go a bit over 21 with about 4500’ vert. Longest run in about a year. Also saw my favorite spring wildflowers too. One of my favorite runs. I earned those post race beers today.

It was a beautiful spring day for a little run with Rommel the magnificent. He’s getting older and arthritic and can’t go quite as far as he used to but he loves getting out on a trail with me.

Well, the 19th edition of the Antelope Island Buffalo Run is in the books. Weather was a hell of a lot better this year. Friday was ideal, in the 50’s and cloudy. Friday night brought a few showers as did Saturday. None of this slowed down the runners as three course records were broken. Women’s 25K, men’s 25K, and men’s 50K. Somewhere around 450 runners showed up for some springtime island running. As usual, my volunteers were phenomenal. I got so many comments on how helpful, fun, enjoyable they all were. My wife’s Buffalo stew was spot on as usual. Many thanks again to Antelope Island State Park, Hammer Nutrition, and Roosters Brewery, Trailmanners for the excellent finish line announcing, and last but not least, Earl the Bison for their support. I think it’s time for a nap after 3 hours of “sleep” in the past 48 hours. And as always, many thanks to all of you runners for coming out year after year to my little springtime trail running party. Y’all are awesome.

It was a stunning day to be out on the island. Had a nice long run while the always lovely Mrs. Skaggs rode her bike. So many people were out hiking, running, biking, and lots of horses. Best of all, no bugs yet. Ever wonder why elephant head is called that? Look at the last picture.

My first retirement activity was a short little retirement “run” with some wonderful friends. It was actually more of a hike but so much fun. Beautiful day on the island.

Well, I finally pulled the trigger. After 39 years as some sort in engineer, including nine years here. I am retired. It’s a bit surreal knowing that next Monday I don’t have to show up for work, and I’m not on vacation. In some ways I’ll miss work. I did enjoy helping out the people I worked with, solving problems, seeing stuff I worked on come to fruition. But I’m also looking forward to having more time for my myriad of hobbies, more running, traveling, and more afternoon naps. Here’s to the next phase of my life.

Just a reminder for those of you interested in running the Buffalo Run this year. The procrastination tax kicks in on Feb. 1. While I can’t guarantee that we’ll have perfect weather like last year….not, I can guarantee that we will have weather. Race date is March 29. All distances will start Friday morning. So get those entries in. Be there or be square.

Spent the weekend in Boise at the ITUS RD meeting and runner party after. We now have 13 races on the ITUS schedule. You have to finish four to be eligible for prizes. Most of the races are already open for registration, so get those entries in. Harriman will open on Feb. 14 and the race date is August 17. Oh, and if you didn’t know ITUS stands for Idaho Trail Ultra Series. It’s been a thing for quite a few years. Picture of a donut shop near Pulse Running. My last day in Pune. Got my work done and it’s time to go home to snowy Utah. I have enjoyed my work visit here. The people are wonderful, the sites, sounds, smells are something I will remember. I was fortunate to have a local fellow employee guide me around old town Pune. This is what I have held in my minds eye about cities in India. It did not disappoint. And yes, authentic street food. Good stuff and my digestive tract is just fine. If you ever get a chance to visit India do it. And now the TFNU has been to India.

More scenes from Pune. Had an Indian coworker spend his entire day escorting me around the city. Highlights included Durga Tekdi park, Agra Khan palace, some fort that I don’t remember the name of, way too much fantastic Indian food (I’m so full), and a bit of shopping. Back to work tomorrow. Definitely got my fill of crowds today.

Did my 6th R2R2R this past weekend. It was just using a different form of transportation. The always lovely Mrs. Skaggs and I took a 20 minute scenic helicopter flight across the canyon to the north rim and back. It was just as spectacular as if I had run it but no exertion was required. Definitely a different perspective to look down and see the Grand Canyon at our feet. 10/10 highly recommend.
