Virgin River Half Marathon. By mile 1 I was thinking this wasn’t such a good idea, by mile 3 I was contemplating my poor life choices, by mile 5 I realized I was down to single digits left. 2:23 and change. Definitely my slowest half ever but good enough to score done age group hardware. 3rd place men 65-69. Proof that if you hang on long enough you’ll outlast the age group competition. Overall not too bad a day. I think it’ll be awhile before I do another half. Ultras are easier. All that constant running is hard.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve run a road half. It’s a really safe bet that I will not break my 20 year old PR of 1:36. I’m just looking to have some fun.

A couple of years ago Carl Tippets, the owner of Pentalon Construction, asked about putting up some prize money in an effort to draw in more top tier runners to the Antelope Island Buffalo Run. Those of you who know Carl can attest that he’s an awesome person and runner. We finally sat down and came up with the Pentalon challenge. In addition to the prize money for the top three runners in each distance that the race supplies, the Pentalon Challenge will provide additional money for any course records that are broken in 2025. $1000 for the 100 mile, $500 for both the 50 mile and 50k, and $250 for the 25k. Some of the course records are pretty stout and it will take a significant effort to break them. Others are not quite as stout. But there were three course records set in 2024. So get going with the training and you could be the one to take home some additional prize money.

Nice little run on flat top mesa in Mesquite, NV. We are being snowbirds for the month so if anyone is escaping the snow for St. George or Mesquite, let me know and maybe we can get together for a run.

Only took a few pics of the race today. Saw plenty of others posted. Weather was perfect for a nice little run on the island. Thank you to all my awesome volunteers for your help and enthusiasm. Thanks to for hosting and for their support. All you runners that came out are pretty badass in my book.
The poor canopy looks a little with everyone gone. Hope to see some of you for the 20th edition of the Buffalo Run next March.

Next year will be the 20th Antelope Island Buffalo Run. I went cruising through past results and here’s a few fun facts. Hope to see a bunch of you for our 20th year next March 28-29.

8715 - total number of finishers at any distance.

4794 - the number of separate people who have run.

548 have completed the 100 mile.

1697 have completed the 50 mile.

2155 have completed the 50K.

4216 have completed the 25K.

Only one person (Jill Bohney) has run and finished every year.

47 people have ten or more finishes.

Another 46 have 8 or 9 finishes.

Earl the bison (pictured) weighs somewhere around 1800 lbs.

Ran the half marathon course on the island. Started in the dark. It was a beautiful morning. A bit windy. On the way back we came across two of the most badass women i know. They were out running the fall 50k course just for fun. I think we negative split the run. I felt really good.

Nice nature hike with the kids and grandkids at the nature preserve. Some amazing native tall grass prairie. So thick and lush, some of those grass stalks were easily 8 feet tall. Wandered through some river bottoms as well.

Way back in 2004 I began my race directing journey with the Rock Cut Hobo Run. I directed it for just the first year then moved to Utah where I’ve been directing races for the past 19 years. I had always wanted to come back and run this race and today I was finally able to. It was fun running the same trails I used to run on 20+ years ago. They were familiar to me even though I haven’t run them in years. The actual race was going ok until about mile 26 when I did a classic face plant. Like my face actually hit the dirt. For a moment I thought maybe my nose was broken but it isn’t. Just bleeding all over the place. Like I usually say, it’s not a good run unless you draw a little blood. Figured my legs were fine so why not finish the race. Managed to run a 7:34 on not much training, but I had a great time. Added bonus I won my age group. All in all a very acceptable day. Time for some pizza and beer.

It was a perfect day for a trail race. 117 runners toed the line this morning. Much wildlife and scenery was viewed and no one got lost. Another Harriman Trail Race is in the books. We should do it again next year.

Ran the El Vaquero 31k yesterday. Lots of fun. Saw so many friends. Scenery was on point as usual. Good times

Spent last week at The Ranch At Rock Creek. They have the five peaks challenge for their guests. Most do it over a few days. I elected to do it in a few hours. Lots of fun. Views would have been better without the smoke but oh well. Love me a good adventure run.
