Italy is not just Rome or Florence, but it is the people, the landscapes, and the emotions. The fragrance in the air from the lavender and rosemary. The light green of the olive trees. The lemons and pomegranates hanging from the trees, this is Italy. Outside of the big cities are hidden gems that can be luxurious or simple and traditional. This is the Italy I would like to introduce you to.

One of the most photographed sculptures in Salzburg is tucked in under the southern archway of the city’s main cathedral. The Pietá, also known as the “Cloak of Consciousness,” is one of the most famous works by artist Anna Chromy. With similar statues in Monaco, Prague, and Athens, the empty cloak is a symbol of what remains in life. The inscription at the base reads, “The empty mantle as a symbol of that which survives us: the love we gave, the works we created, the suffering we bore.”

There's even a Japanese word, hanami, specifically devoted to the viewing of cherry blossoms and picnicking beneath them. For about two weeks each year beginning in mid-March, the country celebrates these beautiful blooms signifying the return of spring and sparking a period of mindfulness and enjoyment of the present moment.

For centuries the Japanese language existed solely as an oral language that was never written down. While the characters are similar to that of the Chinese language, the language itself is very different. The Japanese language uses three different writing systems and also has three different levels of formality. While that may seem complicated, the language does not use plurals or articles, and you can make a complete sentence using only verbs. Luckily, most major cities and attractions also use the English language, so it is easy to get around during your stay.

Sake is a trademark Japanse drink. Made from only four main ingredients, rice, yeast, koji, and water, sake is the perfect complement to most Japanese meals. The fermentation process and the alcohol content of sake are actually very similar to that of wine, but with half the acidity, no sulfates, and low levels of histamines. That means no upset stomach, headache, or red cheeks! Like wine, sake can be enjoyed hot or cold, and its flavors range from sweet to extremely dry.

Perhaps the most recognizable Japanese article of clothing, the kimono, has an ancient history dating over one thousand years old, beginning at the start of the Heian Period in 794. By the Kamakura Period in 1185, the kimono had become an everyday clothing choice the colors signified seasons, gender, or even political and family ties. The art of kimono-making grew into a specialized craft during the Edo Period, with some kimonos being considered a work of art. Although kimonos are no longer an everyday choice, this traditional dress is still worn for special occasions, such as weddings, funerals, and tea ceremonies.

Established in 645, the Sensoji Temple is the most famous Buddhist temple in Tokyo. The temple was built to honor the goddess of mercy, Kannon. Legend states that in 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. While the complex has been around for centuries, the oldest structures are the Nitenmon gate and Rokkaku-do, built-in 1618. All other original structures were lost to various natural disasters. Today the temple complex is one of the most visited religious sites in the world.
