ICE CHECK OKOBOJI/SPIRIT LAKE AREA 12/03/24. Calvin and I poked a few holes today. Anglers Bay on Spirit Lake has just over 3-inches. Minnewashta had around 4-inches where Calvin drilled. However....I know there are areas where there is much less ice. If you head out on the ice use extreme caution. Make sure you have safety equipment. We did drill holes on East Okoboji and found less than three inches in a few places.

HIGH FIVE TO THIS GUY!! A fresh 2-inch blanket of light snow in the Okoboji area makes picture perfect ice fishing scene. I have not drilled so I don't know how thick the ice is. The snow is so fluffy I don't think it will hinder ice growth. West Okoboji is still wide open....even the traditional first spots (Little Emerson and Millers) on west are still open. Spirit Lake looks to be nearly capped....but its gotta be thin. And East Okoboji is mostly capped but there is a huge open area on the main body. I have not drilled anywhere. Its gotta be very thin. OKOBOJI SKIM OF ICE: With colder temperatures on the way this week....the smaller lakes on the Okoboji chain have already formed a skim of ice.. The first photo is Upper Gar completely skimmed over. Photo #2 Minniwashta partially skimmed. Photo 3...Lower Gar. Photo 4 middle section of East Okoboji. Photo 5...upper section of East Okoboji. This is just a skim of ice. I could tap through with just my toe. But with the forecast temperatures.....if we see no wind....this ice should grow quickly this week. It's not ready yet... Be safe!!!
