Big South Fork Art in the Park Reception September 6th

The Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area will host the tenth Annual Photo Contest reception on Friday, September 6 in the Bandy Creek Visitor Center, located at 151 Stable Road, Oneida. The festivities will begin at 5:00 PM (ET).

The festivities will include light refreshments and live music and a display of photographs from the recent Big South Fork photography contest.

During the evening, the contest’s winning entries will be revealed in six categories: Youth, Recreation, Kentucky Landscapes, Tennessee Landscapes, Flora & Fauna, and Human History. The winning entries have been judged on technical excellence, originality, creativity, visual impact, and artistic merit. There will also be a People’s Choice award for the photograph that gets the most votes that evening.

Bears, hogs, and snakes! Oh my! Visit Bandy Creek Visitor Center this Saturday, July 6th at 1 pm EST for Black Bears and Banjos to learn about these interesting animals and how to be safe around them. You'll also get the opportunity to learn some catchy tunes about the animals of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Bring some water and your singing voice and get ready for a good time.

"Storytelling is our obligation to the next generation."-Laura Holloway. Did you know that Big South Fork NRRA has a whole WEEK of storytelling in September? Beginning on September 9th, local storytellers spin spooky yarns at the Blue Heron Ghost Mine. The following week, nationally known storytellers share the art of storytelling to over 20,000 children in local schools. Finally, the Haunting in the Hills Storytelling Festival begins on September 16 with family stories at 10 am ET. At dark, only the bravest stick around to listen to spooky stories underneath the stars.

This Saturday!

The early families who settled the Big South Fork area depended on their ability to successfully raise animals, crops, and gardens to feed themselves. Much of the work done on these farms was aided by mules.

Join us this Saturday for the 23rd Annual Spring Planting & Music Festival, where demonstrations of traditional mule plowing will be taking place at the Lora Blevins Farm area from 9:00 AM (ET) until mid-afternoon.

Calling all mountain bikers!

Trivia Tuesday

You may already know that the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area provides many different outdoor recreational opportunities. What you may not know, is that mountain biking is a popular and growing recreational activity for visitors to the park. Big South Fork offers many miles of mountain biking trails, and some of those trails are considered multiple use. You may encounter other users including hikers and horse riders. These trails can provide bikers of all skill levels with many options for challenges and complexities.

What are some of the long-distance mountain biking trails in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area? The answer can be found by visiting the park website and going to the plan your visit tab and select the trip itineraries tab. Click on popular mountain biking routes. Be sure to always make a plan, wear a helmet, have the appropriate safety gear, and know your limits. Please be sure to write your answer in your GO BIG 2023 Challenge booklet. This question is worth three points.

Remember to always be courteous and share the trail!
