Visit Winkelman and walk across the historic Gila River Bridge!
The town of Winkelman, on the border of Pinal and Gila counties, has a distinctive bridge claim to fame.
The Winkelman Bridge began life back in 1915, when the Pinal County Board of Supervisors appropriated $52,000 from a $500,000 bond issue to build it. Because Winkelman is located on the border of Pinal and Gila counties, Gila County agreed to pay half of the construction cost. At the advice of Assistant State Engineer T.M. Nichols, the structure would be built using multiple-span concrete arches.
In August 1915, R.V. Leeson, assistant engineer for the National Bridge Company, completed the drawings. As delineated by Leeson, the structural type that would be use had been patented by Daniel Luten, with its distinctive horseshoe-arch profile.

Come visit Winkelman and the Gila River!
The Gila River Recreation Area is located along the Gila River and SR 77 North of Winkelman in Gila County, AZ, approximately 70 miles north of Tucson and 100 miles southeast of Phoenix. The Gila River offers river-related recreation opportunities as well as fishing and hunting. The flows during the spring and summer are suitable for river floating activities through outstanding canyon scenery with diverse desert wildlife habitats.
Impressive Gila Conglomerate cliffs tower more than 1,000 feet above the Gila River, and bighorn sheep are commonly spotted. Canoeing, kayaking and rafting enthusiasts take advantage of the spring run-off to enjoy an easy to moderately difficult floating adventure down the Gila. Many people also float the river in inflatable kayaks during the low water of the summer. Lower water also affords hikers the opportunity to safely enjoy the scenic canyon. Visitors can also check out numerous prehistoric and historical structures.

Looking for a something to do on New Years! Check out this fireworks display in Miami, Arizona. Make the day of it and visit one of our unique communities in the Copper Corridor.
As you watch fireworks usher in the New Year around the world this week, thank copper for the vibrant blue and purple in displays such as these launched from our Miami, AZ operations.
It’s the copper compounds in the metal salts that create blue fireworks. Just like paints, secondary colors are made by combining ingredients of primary colors. Thus, a mixture of blue-producing copper compounds and red-producing compounds creates purple fireworks. Other metal salts help produce other various colors in those displays.
